Artist Makes Funny Illustrations of the Best News

Italian illustrator and designer Mauro Gatti wanted to spread some joy and positivity, so he started a rather interesting project last year. Fed up with all the bad news we receive every day, he started illustrating the best news he found in order to show people there are still so many good things in the world.

“We are often bombarded with fear-mongering and shocking headlines that make us feel that the world is falling apart”, the Los Angeles-based artist shared on Bored Panda. “However, while it’s important to report on problems and issues, I believe there is so much good in this world that it needs to be found and promoted just as widely.”

The cafe, situated in Ambikapur, which bagged the title of the second cleanest city in India, will provide free food in exchange for plastic waste. The concept of this cafe is that people can get their plastic waste weighed and enjoy a warm meal in return. "When I got to know about this cafe, I started collecting and storing plastic waste from my house. This is a great initiative to make the citizens aware to keep the city plastic-free. Through this initiative we can get two benefits, first, we can keep our vicinity clean and second, we can get delicious food in exchange for plastic waste," said a resident. The plastic waste collected by the people coming here is ultimately sent to the Municipal Corporation for recycling. You all know how much I love Africa and it’s strong and fierce people and this is another example of strength and love. Theresa Kachindamoto (so formidable, she has been nicknamed “The Terminator”!) was determined to take a stand against the tradition which took teenage girls and made them wives and mothers long before the age of 18. Kachindamoto used her chief role to nullify more than 1500 child marriages since 2017, sending the girls who were married off before being able to complete their education back to school. She took a bold step towards ending poverty in Malawi, where a 2017 UN statistic suggested that about 45% of young girls are unable to remain in school past eighth grade. Billie Eilish fans will be able to earn free tickets to her upcoming tour by helping to fight climate change. The pop star is set to head out on her ‘Where Do We Go’ arena tour next year, which will conclude with four shows at Londons O2 Arena in July. Eilish said: “I teamed up with a great organisation called Global Citizen to help come up with a way to earn tickets to the ‘Where Do We Go’ tour.” The ‘Bad Guy’ artist then directed those interested to her own Global Citizen page, which offers further details on fighting issues such as plastic pollution, global warming, and climate change. About 14 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year and plastic never fully break down. They fragment into smaller pieces called microplastics. In a new study, scientists describe a new type of nanotechnology that could help: tiny magnetic "nano-coils" that create chemical reactions in order to break down microplastics in the ocean. The process converts the plastic into carbon dioxide and water. Nano-tech refers to anything smaller than one billionth of a meter, or half the width of a human hair, the process converts the plastic pieces into harmless salt compounds, Co2, and water. A new gene editing technique called prime editing, tested in human and mouse cells, rewrites DNA by only cutting a single strand to add, remove, or replace base pairs. The method may allow researchers to edit more types of genetic mutations than existing genome-editing approaches such as CRISPR-Cas9. The technology, called prime editing, has been described as a "genetic word processor" able to accurately re-write the genetic code. It has been used to correct damaging mutations in the lab, including those that cause sickle cell anaemia. Mauro Gatti is an Italian illustrator and designer based in Los Angeles, California who just got fed up with all the bad news he hears every day. He decided to start a project that will spread some positivity.

On his Instagram account, called The Happy Broadcast, the artist shares some of this year’s positive news from all around the world in hope that it brings happiness to people and inspires them to spread some good news as well.

“Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights… we have progressed in so many categories and it’s necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we’ve accomplished some amazing things in 2018,” Gatti explained.

In Iceland, teenage smoking, drinking and drug use have been radically cut in the past 20 years. For instance, the percentage of 15- and 16-year-olds who had been drunk in the previous month plummeted from 42 per cent in 1998 to 5 per cent in 2016.⠀ ⠀ How? State funding was increased for organised sport, music, art, dance and other clubs, to give kids alternative ways to feel part of a group, and to feel good, rather than through using alcohol and drugs, and kids from low-income families received help to take part.⠀ ⠀ Parents were encouraged to attend talks on the importance of spending a quantity of time with their children rather than occasional “quality time”, on talking to their kids about their lives, on knowing who their kids were friends with, and on keeping their children home in the evenings.⠀ ⠀ A law was also passed prohibiting children aged between 13 and 16 from being outside after 10pm in winter and midnight in summer. France is at the forefront of a campaign against chemicals blamed for decimating critical populations of crop-pollinating bees. A radical step has been taken towards protecting its dwindling bee population by becoming the first country in Europe to ban all five pesticides that are killing off the insects. What do you do with leftover bread? Make beer! Every year most countries throw away enough bread to feed millions of people (in the UK alone, 44 percent of all bread is wasted). So one independent food shop in Vienna and a Toast Ale in London decided to use stale bread to make their own beer. They take surplus bread from bakeries and sandwich makers, and they replace a third of the barley that would otherwise have been used to brew. By doing that they achieve 2 goals: fight food waste and raise awareness about food waste. A few years ago, Adidas announced they would start making their shoes out of ocean plastic garbage. They teamed up with Parley in 2016 to create a capsule collection made entirely of yarns and filaments recycled from ocean waste. In 2017 Adidas added three more versions of shoes made from ocean plastics and so far sold 1 million pairs, which translates to 11 millions plastic bottles from the ocean recycled into highly profitable product! The majority of straws, routinely placed in glasses of water or soda. are not recyclable. They end up in oceans, and are now among the top 10 waste items to be washed up on beaches. That is the reason why cities (ie. Seattle and Malibu) – and even entire countries (ie.Taiwan and Scotland) – are looking to ban plastic straws and force businesses to provide straws made of alternatives to plastic, including wood, bamboo and paper.
