Katie Brooks is a talented landscape artist from North Carolina, who uses a pretty unusual canvas in her work. Instead of relying on paper like most of her peers, Brooks is collecting leaves in the woods near her home and transforming them into magical works of art that pay homage to their roots.

Brooks always knew she was going to be an artist, but getting there was easier said than done. She spent her childhood collecting leaves and creating art in her family living room, but committing to it full-time seemed like an uncertain and unstable choice, so she took her career in a different direction.

After years of being surrounded by art without actually making it, Brooks decided she couldn’t ignore her true calling any longer. She started painting landscapes on dried leaves, and her signature “100 Painted Leaves Collection” eventually helped her summon the courage to become an artist full-time after her tiny leaf paintings brought her joy that was missing from her life.

Most of her leaves hail from the woods near her home in North Carolina, and she always looks for sturdy, intact leaves with a good shape. She then presses the leaves in an old history book and lets them dry for about a month before prepping them with acrylic gesso and getting ready to paint on them.

The biodiversity of our planet is constantly under threat, and Kelsey Schroeder decided to help out the best way she knew how. This talented ceramic artist is using her body of work to celebrate the diversity of the natural world, and she’s donating a part of her proceeds to the World Wildlife Fund.

Schroeder discovered pottery during her high school years, when he attended beginner-friendly wheel classes at her local YMCA. She picked a photography major during her time in college but struggled spending time in the darkroom after working with clay for hours. She decided to switch her focus to ceramics, and this was where she found her true calling, later displaying her work in galleries all around Cedar Rapids.

After years of experimenting with different subjects, Schroeder is best known for her wildlife series, which celebrates many unique creatures and the beauty of their environments.

“My work has always been inspired by the natural world, particularly the immense biodiversity our planet supports and the unique and beautiful qualities each species adds to their habitat and to our world as a whole,” she writes on her official website.

Schroeder finds inspiration everywhere from coral reefs and ocean tides to desert landscapes and the heart of the forest. She wants her work to make a difference in the world and help protect our planet’s future, so she’s donating a portion of each sale to the World Wildlife Fund.

Known for her series of “Snow Drawings” she creates massive drawings on snow-covered landscapes using footprints. These drawings engage communities worldwide. Participants are guided by Hinrichsen, creating walking pattern systems with snowshoes.

“My work reflects on environmental concerns and addresses our (humankind’s) relationship to the natural world – as we perceive it and interact with it,” she writes on her website. According to Hinrichsen, modern society has become increasingly disconnected from nature.

“We have come to see our planet as a mine to extract the resources we need to maintain our extravagant life-styles, and as a dumping station for our toxic waste products,” she says. “I believe, however, to secure a “habitat” for future generations (of our own species as well as others) it is essential that we tune ourselves in with nature and re-gain greater awareness of our planet, understand it better and take better stewardship of it.”

Her art examines urban and natural environments through exploration and research. Her work process includes looking at indigenous as well as ancient cultures, whose life philosophies perceive mankind as an integrated part of nature, rather than attempting to dominate over it.

“I believe that through the means of art it is possible to point out the importance of environmental soundness – through speaking to emotion and passion for nature, and through unlocking an ancient sense of freedom and awe,” she explains.

Do you have a knack for being able to create things? Do you have a drawer/closet/ROOM (?!!!??) full of things like fabric, paint, half finished and future projects- like I do?? While I love being a multi-craft-crafter, I find that I have lots of projects that I start, but few that I actually ever finish. . Anyone else relate????? . One of the things I love most about flowers is the immediacy of them. If I buy flowers, I have to create with them NOW. There’s no waiting around, hoping I get to it… I either create, or they die, and I lose that opportunity. I kind of love that accountability. It means creating when I don’t always feel like it, which makes it a practice. I know when I practice, I’ll learn… and in that sweet learning place I can be like a child. Curious, bold, and unafraid. When I’m practicing it doesn’t have to be perfect. . WHAT DO YOU LOVE TO PRACTICE? What creative process gives you LIFE? Tell me below! . . . IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE about floral design, I have created a very affordable and accessible online video classroom that is already serving nearly one thousand members of the creative community! I’d like to invite you to join the flower party cause I think you’ll love it here! ?? . Members of the Ponderosa Classroom Online have access to: • Beautiful floral education and inspiration accessible online 24 hours a day ?☀? . • Recipes and “how-to” Online guides for gorgeous arrangements sent directly to your inbox every month ? . • Access to ALL PAST EPISODES (tutorials, meditations, conversations and bonus materials) for as long as you’re an active subscriber ✔✔✔✔ . • Special access to brand new Ponderosa & Thyme playlists ??? . • Members only access to the Ponderosa Community Facebook group where we have hundreds of creatives from all over the globe sharing their art and their hearts!?‍?‍?‍?. . Katie’s flower arrangements are special for several reasons. First, her designs are beautiful – they almost seem like statues. But it’s not just the way she arranges flowers and plants, it’s also where she gets them. Katie uses locally-grown flowers and works with Oregon-based farmers to create arrangements that represent Oregon. The arrangements change from season to season, as the seasonal flowers change, so now wreath or bouquet is like any other.

This can be a challenge, of course, as Katie is limited to whatever is available in her home state, but it is also an opportunity to create a community of farmers, florists and flower enthusiasts, who all share a deep love for nature. We can’t all visit Ponderosa and Thyme, unfortunately, but Katie’s IG account does provide us a pick to her wonderful world of plants and flowers. Take a look and maybe you’ll be inspired to create your own bouquet.

This photo is from my latest lesson in the Ponderosa Classroom Online. This lesson is all about centerpieces, and bringing joy to the holiday table! Today’s in-person wreath class was so heart filling. Yes, we made wreaths, and we ALSO made memories and lasting heart connections. We talked about the intensity that the holiday season can bring, and the importance of being PRESENT, right now, exactly as you are, with whatever you bring. It’s enough. You’re enough. Today, I remembered, once again, why I love teaching. Seeing breakthroughs with color and textures and mindsets is amazing! It’s not magic, but sometimes it feels like it, and every single time, I’m filled with wonder, delight and deep gratitude to see what the creative process brings out in my new friends. While I know not everyone can come learn from me in person (even though I wish you could!!) I wanted to find a way to make all my classes accessible for EVERYBODY! My dream was to create affordable, unlimited access to creative education, with a social/networking community component… this seemed like an impossible task until, with the help of a good friend, I realized that I was already doing it on my IG LIVE platform… and while doing IG LIVE videos every day wasn’t sustainable long term, I knew I’d find a more sustainable way, and from that place of knowing and with some sage advice from @darcybenincosa, the Ponderosa Classroom Online subscription program was birthed! Now, for less than $100 a year (that’s a crazy amazing deal!) you can have access to my little magical corner of the internet, where you’ll find encouragement, education and connection. PCO is the place where I hope you’ll get more than you ever expected- including a community of like minded creatives and new ideas and inspiration every single month. If your heart is pounding a little harder reading these words, your not alone. We all need to find our people. I hope I get to be one of them! During this season, give yourself the gift of community and presence. Do it for yourself and for your heart. It’s your time to SHINE! When she is flipping through nature and wildlife magazines and textbooks, Toronto-based artist Jennifer Murphy isn’t just doing it for her interest in these subjects. She is also finding material for her art.

Murphy cuts out small photos of animals, plants, and organic objects from these magazines and then uses them to create nature collages. She uses transparent threads to string the cutouts together and piece them into birds, butterflies, and insects.

Besides the larger picture, Murhpy’s pieces are also full of intriguing scenes and curious details that make them worthy of careful observation.

According to Murphy, she began creating the collages after the death of a friend.

“The work was a way to cope with the grief but also an outlet to hope,” the artist explained. “This series comes at another time of loss, both personal and I believe collective. We now live in a time of ecological mourning and are in desperate need for paths to rediscover hope.”

Check out some of Murphy’s impressive works below.
