Artur Bordalo is a 32-year-old gifted Portuguese artist and the creator of a series of artworks made from trash. Big Trash Animals is created from waste that was dumped in the area and represents both the beauty of nature and the waste materials that threaten it.

“I belong to a generation that is extremely consumerist, materialist and greedy,” the artist wrote on his personal website. “With the production of things at its highest, the production of ‘waste’ and unused objects is also at its highest. I create, recreate, assemble and develop ideas with end-of-life material and try to relate it to sustainability, ecological and social awareness.”

Bordalo shares his masterpieces on his social media accounts, mostly on Instagram where he has attracted more than 210 thousand followers. His work has been recognized both locally and internationally.

If you are curious to see more of his work, have a look on Instagram or on his website.

Global warming, air pollution, and trash, lots and lots of trash. Modern life has its downfalls and Environmental Studies major Lauren Singer is prepared to tackle them, one soda can at a time.

Her zero-waste lifestyle is documented in her online blog and social media outlets, Trash is for Tossers. For Singer, zero waste means not producing any garbage whatsoever. “No sending anything to landfill, no throwing anything in a trash can, nothing. However, I do recycle and I do compost,” she explains.

It all started in 2012, when she noticed her classmate would bring his lunch in a single-use plastic bag, a disposable water bottle, and a plastic takeout container. “I would sit there and think: we are supposed to be the future of this planet and here we are with our trash, messing it up,” writes Singer.

And to Singer, a zero-waste lifestyle is not as torturous as it may seem, and can actually be quite fun and, naturally, cost-effective. So, would you consider turning your life around?

Artist Haseltine Pozzi understands her life calling as healing the sea. Her celebrated non-profit project, Washed Ashore, takes this notion quite literally: by collecting marine debris and plastic pollution and then turning this trash into pieces of art.

“The Washed Ashore Project works to increase awareness of the global tragedy of plastics pollution in the ocean,” reads their website. “We accomplish this by collecting marine debris through beach cleanups and community workshops. The collected trash is used to create large scale sculptures of sea life threatened by marine debris. The sculptures are created by volunteers in our workshops and staff under the direction of Angela Haseltine Pozzi our Artistic Director and Lead Artist.”

Over 10,000 volunteers have helped clean beaches and worked with Washed Ashore to process over 20 tons of debris into over 70 sculptures of the animals affected by plastic pollution. The organization also partners with schools, state parks, service groups, youth centers, and local businesses to spread the word about the dangers of plastics pollution and to teach citizens to become better stewards of the ocean.

Check out some of Pozzi’s large scale sculptures of animals and be sure to follow her social media pages for more inspiration.
