The Garment District Alliance of NYC partnered with the city’s Department of Transportation and the architects working in the Canadian company Lateral Office to create an interactive seesaw playground.

The installation is located in Manhattan, between 37th and 38th Streets on Broadway and it consists of 12 big seesaws that start playing music and illuminating every time they’re used.

A block of Broadway had to be closed for traffic but we think it was worth it. The installation is called Impulse and the citizens and visitors of New York City enjoy it a lot so far. Impulse is a part of a public art program called Garment District Art on the Plazas.

You can try them yourself if you’re in New York!

Born in London in 1959, Bruce Munro is a British artist known for his immersive large-scale light installations that evoke awe, reverence, joy, and pure delight.

Based in his Wiltshire studio, Bruce and his team work long hours to make his extraordinary ideas come to life. His work has been shown in countless museums and gardens, earning him the reputation of a true visionary.

The experienced light artist exhibits all across the world, creating impressive gigantic installations as well as smaller, detailed story pieces. The inspiration for his work is derived from a lifetime of enjoying literature, travelling and passionately experimenting with light.

In 2000, while he was still working as a commercial lighting designer, Munro visited Uluru, a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of Australia’s Northern Territory, and got deeply inspired by what he felt to be “energy rising from the ground”. Soon, he created his first “Field of Light” installation, which is his biggest and most famous work so far.

Powered by more than 60,000 solar led lights, “Field of Light” is a sculptural garden that looks like a multicolored blanket spread over a field and is essentially a playground for the mind.

Take a look at Munro’s glowing work.

With the idea to make people reflect on the political repression in the past and the present, Argentinian artist Marta Minujín designed a fascinating installation constructed with 100,000 banned books. The installation named The Parthenon of Books is developed as an art replica of the Greek Parthenon, as part of the art festival Documenta 14, in Kassel, Germany.

The Parthenon of Books is a symbolic representation of the influence of politics and is built with books that were or still are prohibited in some countries around the world. The artist shared the idea for including numerous banned books in her art installation and asked the public to donate them so that she, together with students from the Kassel University, could construct the replica.

Wrapped in plastic, the 100,000 books are hanging from the structure which sits on the place where 2,000 books were burned in the Nazi Book Burning in the 1930s, which is a reminder of the constant censorship of those who were viewed as opponents of Nazi ideologies.
