]]> Tattoos. We all know about them, some of us – more and more, in fact – have them. But permanently inking one’s skin is a tradition that has developed in many different societies, with all sorts of meanings.

In New Zealand, the indigenous Maori people decorated their skin with intricate black-and-white design. Women would traditionally tattoo their chink with “moko kauae”, chin tattoos, right under their lower lip. Moko kauae tattoos were not only for beauty – they were considered sacred and indicated the wearer’s tribe, status, and personal story.

But unfortunately, these old traditions have slowly disappeared since the arrival of European settlers to New Zealand. In Europe, tattoos were associated with the lower class and considered ugly, so Maori people were discouraged from wearing them.

Today, however, tattoos are once again considered a form of art and are more and more accepted by the general population. And with “regular” tattoos, the moko kauae is also making a comeback.

Today, women of Maori descend once again decorate their chins with the moko kauae their ancestors wore proudly. Some paint it over their skin occasionally, and some get a permanent tattoo. All of them look beautiful and inspiring with their gorgeous moko kauae.

I was called to you by tipuna, and met you at Te pā o Toikairākau, atop Te Mātārae o Kōhi one beautiful, sunny day in 2009. Called there to see your essence beside your tipuna Toroa. My eyes met our pāpā and my head bowed to him at the enormous mana he emanated. My tinana shook at his presence, powerful and commanding, and he spoke only these words as he held a patu parāoa in his hand.. “Mai i tēnei wā,mai i tēnei wā” *From now on I was to now become your caretaker. And as I sighted a small boy at his side, I cried physical tears, standing there alone on top of this tipuna pā site at Kōhi point and I knew with every part of me…. that you were to be my son, that you were coming, that I would carry you in my whare and become your mother. Not long before I saw your tipuna kuia at te ana o Muriwai and was asked,without words, if I would receive the gift of carrying a child for them. I gave that to them that day, my heart, and to you,my son. I knew your name. I heard it as I drove up Ōmokoroa…in our karakia that has resonated through pā sites, over rituals, sent through whare tipuna and across marae ātea…and it resounded clearly and powerfully… the line…’i Te Rae o Kōhi’… Tō ingoa. Your name. Yours bestowed upon you by your keepers. Given to you for reasons only they know, dutifully fulfilled by me. And Toroa gently, placed his hand on your small back and guided you to me. You came to my side and I looked at your wairua and I smiled.. “Tēnā koe my son”… and I gave my mihi to you both and left with a full heart, that beautiful sunny day, knowing that one day soon you would become a part of me, and be born into the world. I have loved you since that moment, and I will love you until the end of time, and in all my challenges and failings and all my wins and moments of joy, you are among my greatest teachers son. Keeping on with tattoo appreciation posts. @murielzaotattoo was able to snag a better pic of my white ink than I can 🤍 Its now about two years old, and pops so much, it’s basically all anyone sees when I’m in public. I am very fair and my chest seems to reflect cooler tones. White ink is not for everyone, you will get different results with different skin types. I do not suggest it as a first tattoo, if you want a tattoo “no one can see” don’t get one. White gets a bad rep but there are a ton of factors you have to think about (application, aftercare, the clients skin tone) that affect the final outcome. All that being said I still love white ink tattoos and the beauty in how delicate they are. I will be eventually adding more to my throat at some time Swipe right for unfiltered photo. ***My artist is not taking on any new white pieces at this time***

]]> At the age of 12, Ash Soto was diagnosed with vitiligo. When her condition began to deteriorate, she started to feel uncomfortable with her skin. She endured bullying as a child, but as a 21-year-old adult, she embraces her skin.

When Soto became a teenager, she decided to make serious changes without letting her skin hold her back. She started small by giving herself small tasks such as taking a walk without putting on a long sleeve shirt. In the end, she found an excellent way to express herself: by turning her body into art. This young Instagrammer didn’t know how beautiful her skin was until she started tracing it with a marker.

This art helps her body to highlight the different skin colors. She was able to turn an imperfection into a beautiful piece of art and empower young people such as herself.
