Multidisciplinary communication designer Todd Watts specializes in brand activation, promotional material, snackable content, and conceptual development for brands and film or TV projects. His work also includes tactile design solutions that are both creative and approachable.

But it’s a more personal series of his that caught our attention—his book series. In it, he manipulates some of his favorite books into original paper sculptures. “I wanted to create a visual representation of some of my favorite books,” he told A’ Design Award and Competition‘s blog. “Paper-craft seemed the perfect medium to achieve this.”

According to Watts, he challenged himself to do so after rediscovering his love for reading books. “I wanted to challenge myself with a passion project using papercraft to elevate my favorite stories into surreal and imaginative works of art,” he relayed. “I wanted to create a conversation and a guessing game between the viewer of the art and the books they represented.”

His paper hints include the web from Charlotte’s Web and a rose from The Secret Garden. “The entire project is representing the power of reading,” he explained. According to him, in a digital world it’s becoming harder to dedicate time to the classic paperback because reading from screens makes us read slower, learn less deeply, remember less, and sleep worse. “This is why students prefer to print out their electronic textbooks,” he reflected. “This is ‘The Power of the Paperback.'”

“I love creating paper-craft designs,” admits Watts. “They’re a test in patience and problem solving, it’s very exciting when it works.”

After a career in music, Jane Foster decided to switch gears and start a new career in her late 30s. “It’s been quite an exciting adventure so far!” she writes on her website. “I moved to Devon from Brighton around eight years ago and I became a self-employed creative with a multi-hyphen career.”

Her “multi hyphen” career includes illustrating, writing, and textile designing. Based in South Devon, Foster spends much of her time illustrating books and working on licensing designs but she also has a small range of products that she creates for her web shop. “My purpose in life is to bring joy into other people’s lives by creating happy illustrations for children’s books, wall art, mugs, and other products,” she writes. Indeed, her bold, happy designs appeal to children and adults alike.

But carving herself her own path took time, effort, and overcoming her doubts. “I’m very self-critical and worry a lot so it’s quite bizarre in some ways that I left the security of a teaching career (in music) to carve out a new career in an area which is so precarious,” she admitted in an interview with Creative Boom. “However, I also think the uncertainty drives me on and makes me determined to make my life work out.”

Her advice to other creatives? “Don’t be afraid to fail – successful people have failed lots. Talent is only a small part of becoming an illustrator, the rest is sheer dog-eared determination!”

For almost a decade now, San Francisco based artist, Alexis Arnold, has been collecting discarded books and turning them into crystallized, mystifying artifacts. According to Arnold, her Crystallized Book Series was prompted by continuously finding boxes of discarded books and magazines, the onset of e-books, and the recent disappearance of bookstores.

The crystals are grown by her by creating a super-saturated solution of Borax in boiling water. “When water boils, its molecules expand,” she explained the scientific process that goes behind the scenes in an interview with Redefine Magazine. “I place the book in the saturated solution when hot and manipulate the book to my liking. As the saturated water cools again, the molecules shrink and any excess Borax crystallizes. Once the solution has completely cooled and the crystals have grown on the submerged objects, I drain the solution and dry the object without disturbing its shape. The objects will hold their new, transformed shape when completely dry.”

Arnold’s artwork aims to explore the perception and experience of light and color, the visual effects of time, various geologic processes, and the potential of the material. Addressing the theme of “materiality versus content,” her series raises questions about the palpable ways in which time (in it’s physical or visual presence) shapes our cultural experiences.

“The crystals remove the text and transform the books into aesthetic, non-functional objects,” points Arnold. “The books, now frozen with heavy crystal growth, have become artifacts or geologic specimens laden with the history of time, use, and nostalgia. The stories included in books often exist in our memories while the book remains a spine on a shelf. I love how just seeing a book can conjure the story contained within. With the addition of the crystal growth, the story within the book remains in memory, but new stories can be created by viewers as well.”

The Harry Potter superstar, Emma Watson, has long since outgrown her role as Hermione Granger. The United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador has been promoting education for girls, visiting Bangladesh and Zambia, and launching the UN Women campaign HeForShe; proving that she’s much more than a talented actress.

But still a bookworm at heart, the past couple of years has seen Watson hard at work at her feminist book club. Something her alter-ego, Hermione, would have been definitely proud of.

The goal of her club is to share feminist ideas and encourage discussion on the topic. Hosted on Goodreads, to become a member all you need to do is register for an account and join on the group’s page.

“As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on,” wrote Watson. “There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.”

I partnered up with internationally bestselling author Anna Todd (@imaginator1d) on the release of #TheBrightestStars. 📚 QOTD: What do you want to see in a love story? 📚 For me, for a love story to be good, it has to be difficult. It has to rip me apart. You already know I love tragic endings, but when a love story is involved, it’s more about the difficulties the couple faces than about how things end. As long as they go through the worst of the worst, even if they end up fine, then I’m good. The Brightest Stars (in stores now) seems to be my kind of book from this perspective. It’s a novel about a young woman’s quest to keep her family together, despite the lies that are tearing them apart. 📚 SYNOPSIS: Karina knows the harsh realities of military life. And like anyone who has grown up around an army base, she knows the background noise that follows a soldier home from war. That’s why she’s forging her own quiet life in her own little house. But she hasn’t turned her back on her family. She’s the glue that holds them together—when her father is deployed, when her brother, Austin, has another brush with the law. Karina knows that she has to look after herself, that she can’t always fix what’s broken. But when Austin’s behavior worsens and her father’s reactions grow more extreme, Karina feels her own edges beginning to fray. That’s when she meets him—a closed book she’s desperate to open. At just twenty, Kale is a handsome, brooding soldier struggling with the aftermath of two tours in Afghanistan. He’s emotionally damaged and closed off. But as Karina gets used to his stable presence, she finds it hard to ignore the way he makes her feel. But illusions quickly made are quickly shattered. That’s when Karina has to find her own courage—to untangle the truth from the lies, and decide what she’s going to do about it. A riveting story about love and lies, The Brightest Stars will stay with you long after the last page has been turned. 📚 #bookstagram #bookgram #thebrighteststars #annatodd #romance #love #instalove #readingbooks #bookstagrammer #romancereads #igreads #reads #bookgirl #stars #📚 #📘 #booksbooksbooks #bookart #art #artgram #flatlay #fromabove #📖

What's one book/series that you hated at first but then it turned out to be super good? 📚 You know what I'm gonna talk about. Throne of Glass. When I read the first book, I couldn't stand Celaena. I didn't believe her badassness, I didn't believe her as a character. She didn't do anything to show she's the best assassin in Adarlan, and I hated that stupid love triangle. Plus, the plot of the book was stupid. Being the King's Champion isn't the kind of job that would require a contest. 📚 So for more than a year I didn't touch any other book in this series. Until exactly 20 days ago when I was in the mood for something heartbreaking and I rememberd Sam (there was a small fanfic that I read on Insta that reminded me of him). So I started The Assassin's Blade and rolled my eyes so much I swear I could see the back of my head. Still, I didn't like it. And after finishing it, on a whim, I started Crown of Midnight. Cute, but average. But it made me read Heir of Fire. And oh boy. 📚 The funny thing is, I barely remember what happens in every book. I only remember the story. 📚 So now I started Tower of Dawn. 📚 Manon is bae and I want an origin story. 📚 I definitely like ToG more than ACOTAR (maybe because I read ACOTAR a long time ago, but even without that, the story in ToG is… grander). 📚 Pic 100% inspired by @thebookfamilyrogerson 📚 #whpdressup #throneofglass #kingdomofash #crownofmidnight #empireofstorms #heiroffire #theassassinsblade #aelin #aelingalathynius #chaol #chaolwestfall #dorian #manonblackbeak #manon #abraxos #maeve #acotar #sarahjmaas #sjmaas #celaenasardothien #celaena #acomaf #acowar #feyre #rhysand #bookstagram

The New York Public Library has started an interesting project on their Instagram page. They want to publish classical pieces of literature on Instagram stories so the young generations can read them in a familiar format.

Insta stories work as a slideshow in which every page stays on screen for 15 seconds unless you tap it with your finger to hold for longer. That’s why NYPL’s page design comes with a convenient button in the bottom right corner that the reader can hold until he’s finished with a page without covering part of the text.

Visit their Instagram to see how this project looks live with the first novel in the series: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

“It is a discrete painting. It is only there when you know how to unlock it,” Frost explains.

The fore-edge painting has been around since about 1660 and became really popular in the 18th century. See how Frost does it in the video below.

Martin Frost, the last commercial fore-edge painter in the world, keeps this ancient art alive in today’s modern times. Fore-edge painting is an art form where the edges of gilded books are embellished with art that can only be seen when the book is open in a certain way.

“It is a discrete painting. It is only there when you know how to unlock it,” Frost explains.

The fore-edge painting has been around since about 1660 and became really popular in the 18th century. See how Frost does it in the video below.
