If you’re an Instagram junkie like we are, curating your feed can be a daunting task. One thing to keep in mind is: keep it light! Following accounts that make you happy—and more importantly, hungry—is crucial in the days of quarantine. With traveling limited to our kitchens, here at PlayJunkie, we seek out the best Instagram pages to keep you motivated.

This week, we present you with Jessica Merchant. The mastermind behind the hugely successful food blog How Sweet Eats, Merchant has amassed over 500,000 fans on Instagram (and counting!). Scrolling through her page, you’ll easily get hooked.

Merchant’s blog and accompanying Instagram offers anything from healthy recipes to comfort food and indulgent desserts to cocktails and mocktails. “One of my main points is to not be afraid to make things your own,” she told Bakepedia.

Merchant puts her money where her mouth is. A self-taught cook, she taught herself the ins and out of cooking and baking through trial and error. According to Merchant, she makes upwards of six recipes per day and tests most of her recipes at least once.

“My desserts aren’t as precise as many [dessert recipes], and a lot of them allow you to swap things in and out,” she admits. She adds that “it’s all about trial and error; that’s how I learned to bake. So don’t be afraid!”

Get your hands—and feed—messy by following her on Instagram. You can also purchase her best-selling cookbooks, Seriously Delish, and The Pretty Dish.

Food blogger Mandy Lee admits she treats cooking as a hobby, more than anything else. “It’s as much a hobby to me as video games are to gamers,” she stated once in an interview with Outlook India. But with more than 120k followers on Instagram alone, her love of food has grown to be more of a vocation.

Born in Taiwan, raised in Vancouver-raised, and slow-aged in New York, Lee is currently based in Hong Kong with her husband and pups (her blog, aptly named Lady and Pups, suggests the central role both food and dogs has in her life).

Her cultural background comes to place in the dishes themselves, which act as a sort of homage for her mixed heritage. “Even a Nutella sandwich has codes to be cracked,” says Lee. “For the life of me, I don’t understand why people cook if they don’t enjoy the fundamental aspects of it.”

With so many of us craving to crack the code of cooking, Lee’s recipes come in handy. Featured mainly on her blog, Lee also shares her tip and tricks with other publications, including Saveur, FoodandWine.com, Yahoo, Food 52, and the WashingtonPost.

Time for another episode of, #cookingoutloud. Congee, the ramen of rice, where versatility is its strength and strange ideas are welcomed. First make a base of fragrant oil by frying a few sliced shallots until crispy and caramelized. Remove the shallots with a slotted spoon then fry two handfuls of ground pork, pre-seasoned with fish sauce and cornstarch, until crumbled and crispy on the edges smelling like a glorious morning. Add the fried shallots back in and raise it with equal amount of thinly julienne ginger, and a couple cups of cooked short grain rice. Now add enough chicken stock to flood all the ingredients but reserve the option to readjust. Remember you can always add but you can’t take away. Season with more fish sauce and good amount of black pepper, then simmer until the rice is soft but not dissolved. For more textural contrast, kindly consider Korean sliced sticky rice cakes to enter the scene towards the end. Readjust with more chicken stock to your liking. A very delicious case can be made for a consistency that is still soupy and not overly thickened. For toppings, boneless mackerels that are heavily seasoned with salt and white pepper and coated with potato starch, are fried until charred and blistered spots appear on both sides then flaked by forks and scattered on top of the congee. The crunch and sturdy oceanic profile brings not only contrast but excitements. Speaking of which, a touch of acidity like chopped pickled chilis along with their pickling juice would be an unforgivable crime if overlooked. That green you’re seeing is hand-torn mint. But I’m not gonna tell you where to stop. • • • • • #f52grams #feedfeed #huffposttaste #buzzfeast #eeeeeats #beautifulcuisines #thekitchn #foodandwine #forkyeah #yahoofood #onthetable #buzzfeedfood #vscofood #foodstyling #foodphotography #lifeandthyme #eater #heresmyfood #food52 #gloobyfood #foodgawker #eattheworld #eatfamous #tastingtable #dailyfoodfeed #spoonfeed #foodbeast #hautecuisines #foodblogfeed

Sometimes, it’s not what you eat — it’s how you eat it. Ukraine-based woodworker Kirill Babii produces hand-made wood utensils – minimalistic instruments that are used for eating, but also, for admiring. According to his website, his utensils are made out of two types of wood: walnut and apricot tree. Both beautiful and strong, these types of wood are made to last.

“I don’t cut down trees for the wood I need,” Babii explained in an interview with the Etsy blog. Instead, he collects fallen trees and logs cast off from construction sites, making his work both sustainable and waste-free. “I also try to be as efficient as possible with how I use the wood I have,” he notes. “I don’t necessarily think that we must only use natural materials in our lives, but I do think we should be quite careful about which materials we use and how our choices influence our life and the life of our surroundings.”

“I like working with my senses,” says Babii, “the materials, and the function and requirements of the piece to create the best possible combination—something that distills the very best of everything and keeps only the most necessary elements. Sometimes good design happens fast and coincidentally, but often it’s the result of long and hard work with a lot of fails. But it’s always so inspiring to create. It’s the most valuable time in my life.”

According to Babii, he’s most inspired in the mornings, when he goes for his daily run through the fields and mountains — rain or shine. “I like mornings so much,” he says, “they are births, beginnings, full of energy and opportunities.” He also feels inspired while designing, realizing an idea and then bringing it to life.
