]]>Kalinina was born and raised in Lithuania, and being an artist was always part of her DNA. She grew up surrounded by professional artists who encouraged her to express herself creatively – even if it meant having her scribble all around the walls and furniture in her house.
Kalinina pursued formal education at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, where she excelled in many different areas, from drawing and painting to textiles. Following graduation, she decided to use the power of social media to find an audience and attracted 590,000 followers to her Instagram page @kkkalinina.art.
Kalinina finds inspiration everywhere she turns, from nature to popular culture, but she’s truly on top of her game when she’s drawing food. Some of her most popular viral videos see her capturing juicy fruits, from lemons and pomegranates to berries and avocados, in a highly realistic style, and she enjoys embracing the same approach with other subjects.

]]>Birch is a full-time visual artist, author, and playwright from Salt Lake City, Utah, who also describes herself as a daydreamer and avid procrastinator. She pursued her passion for art by getting a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Utah and went on to develop her vivid, retro style.
In addition to being a true sensation on social media, with over 230,000 Instagram followers under her belt, Birch also worked with many major brands and even created art for numerous movies and TV shows, such as Glee and Transparent.
Food is one of the most common subjects she enjoys exploring, and that’s not a coincidence. She believes that food and other seemingly mundane objects hold much more significance than we realize.
“In my opinion, you don’t have to look far to find art, whether it’s in a shadow cast by a piece of fruit or in the clear cellophane wrapper of a piece of candy. I’m often inspired by the mundane, but I get a lot of joy from transforming it,” she told Strathmore Artist.

]]>As a base, she uses breakfast smoothies made from cream, milk, fruits, and berries, while the paintings themselves are created using coconut cream, almond milk, spices, herbs, and vegetable powders. Playing with textures, patterns, and contrast, she sticks to vibrant color palettes that make the finished product all the more appetizing.
Her smoothie-paintings reinterpret real or fictional characters. Amongst them, you can find a smoothie portrait of Frida Kahlo and the dance scene from La La Land. She also loves creating animal paintings, with the result being undeniably cute.
“It all started with a happy accident,” recalled Zakariya in an interview with Vogue. “I was trying to garnish my soup with coconut cream swirls, but it didn’t turn out as planned, so I added some pesto and created a tree.”
“I love getting into creative projects in my spare time,” said the self-taught food artist, who treats her work as a hobby. “It’s a great mindfulness practice and a way of expressing myself, challenging my skills, and creating something that is unique.”

]]>“I originally studied advertising back in Shanghai for college,” she told Freelance Wisdom. “Upon graduation, I took a giant leap into illustration and came to America to attend graduate school at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. After I finished my MFA degree I moved to New York, aiming to become a freelance illustrator.”
“I love food, which is obvious,” she added. “So when I first started out, I took some advice from my peers and started a Tumblr that was dedicated to practicing drawing food, called Hu is Hungry. Then one day I got a big number of reblogs, and gained more fans in 24 hours than my other Tumblr did in 2 years. After that, I made a pin based on one of my food drawings and surprisingly sold a lot when I was tabling at MOCCA, more than most of my other creations.”
“After finishing a big project back in 2016, I dedicated 2 months of my time fully to Hu is Hungry, and from there, everything started to build and grow.” Take a look at some of our favorite creations of hers in the gallery below.
