Kate Jarvik Birch’s retro illustrations became a huge hit on social media, and their simplicity is the best thing about them. Birch is a huge believer that there’s beauty to be found in everyday objects that often go overlooked, and that’s why food is one of her favorite subjects.
Birch is a full-time visual artist, author, and playwright from Salt Lake City, Utah, who also describes herself as a daydreamer and avid procrastinator. She pursued her passion for art by getting a degree in painting and drawing from the University of Utah and went on to develop her vivid, retro style.
In addition to being a true sensation on social media, with over 230,000 Instagram followers under her belt, Birch also worked with many major brands and even created art for numerous movies and TV shows, such as Glee and Transparent.
Food is one of the most common subjects she enjoys exploring, and that’s not a coincidence. She believes that food and other seemingly mundane objects hold much more significance than we realize.
“In my opinion, you don’t have to look far to find art, whether it’s in a shadow cast by a piece of fruit or in the clear cellophane wrapper of a piece of candy. I’m often inspired by the mundane, but I get a lot of joy from transforming it,” she told Strathmore Artist.
