When she was only 5 years old, Alena decided to start growing her hair. She refused to cut it all this time, and now, almost 30 years later she has 6 foot (1.8 meters) long hair.
“My love for my braid is so strong that for a second in my whole life I did not think about a haircut. I can not see and cannot imagine myself with short hair or dyed in a different color!”
Most girls dream of having long and gorgeous hair like Alena, but we can all agree on one thing – taking care of 6-foot long hair is a full-time job. Kravchenko finds a great deal of joy in this, in spite of the fact that her hair outgrew her height. She has many useful tips on how to properly treat any hair.
“The main thing that I never do: I don’t dry my hair with a hairdryer, I don’t use curling irons, I don’t comb my wet hair (they dry naturally), it’s all taboo. I wash my hair once a week, use natural masks, various types of oils to nourish my hair; the main care is professional cosmetics. I definitely use dried fruits, nuts, and homemade cottage cheese.”

“I take a lot of my inspiration from experience and I am very nostalgic,” she said in an interview with Dazed & Confused. “So I love creating odes to visual things that make me happy. It might be my favourite blouse, a grandma’s chair, or a texture I find interesting. I love being able to prove that they can be translated into hair.”
“I love the 80s,” she admitted. “I missed the decade (or rather I was too young to ‘grow up’ in it) but I always gravitated towards it. I still do. I spent a lot of time dissecting and immersing myself in the fashion and especially, music. Geometric shapes also work really well with hair. They are simple and create clean work, which is important to me.”

And so, a hair-movement began. Named the Vacancy Project, Hosono’s salon caters to all people no matter the gender. “I wanted to do a gender-neutral hair salon,” explained the hair stylist in an interview with i-D Magazine. “I think [everywhere] will be all gender-neutral in the future,” she said.
To Hosono and her colleagues, Ann Causey and Genevieve Cook, the most important thing is creating a hairstyle that suits the client. “I don’t want to give someone a hairstyle just because it’s trendy,” Hosono explained.
