Janine Ker’s rainbow-colored buzz cuts are creative, funky, and fresh, just in time for summer. ‘Cause whoever said a buzz cut has to be boring?

Operating from Pasadena, California, Ker dyes her client’s hair in a variety of colors, then proceeds to carve out geometric shapes and patterns upon the freshly cut hair.

“I take a lot of my inspiration from experience and I am very nostalgic,” she said in an interview with Dazed & Confused. “So I love creating odes to visual things that make me happy. It might be my favourite blouse, a grandma’s chair, or a texture I find interesting. I love being able to prove that they can be translated into hair.”

“I love the 80s,” she admitted. “I missed the decade (or rather I was too young to ‘grow up’ in it) but I always gravitated towards it. I still do. I spent a lot of time dissecting and immersing myself in the fashion and especially, music. Geometric shapes also work really well with hair. They are simple and create clean work, which is important to me.”

Take a look at some of her original haircuts in the gallery below.

The images and video we will show you below were created by an Uzbekistan barber, Qurbon Ali Qurbonov. Qurbonov is a fashionista barber who provides his customers with various hairstyles. Some of which appear as images drawn with the individual’s hair.

In the video, we see the barber turning an external transparent glass container around a fixed inner transparent glass cup. On the external one, he drew different hairstyles, while the inner one has the image of a man’s head without hair.

He keeps turning the external glass around the inner one to see which of these hairstyles is best for the image, considering the shape of his head. We see how he has incorporated his knowledge of art into his line of work.

We can also see the pictures here, which show he is really a barber with a degree of artistic ability.

Have you ever wondered why women pay more for their haircuts? Why, in fact, is there a difference at all between male and female haircuts? Thinking along these lines, NYC Hairstylist Masami Hosono, turned to Instagram. “Starting April, I am equalizing women and men’s haircut,” she wrote on her Instagram page. “They will both be $80.”

According to Hosono, she’s always wondered why we separate our hairstyles based on gender. “It’s really diverse in a spectrum of preference! Many of my clients also identify gender neutral or transgender so… the aim is a gender-neutral salon,” she wrote.

And so, a hair-movement began. Named the Vacancy Project, Hosono’s salon caters to all people no matter the gender. “I wanted to do a gender-neutral hair salon,” explained the hair stylist in an interview with i-D Magazine. “I think [everywhere] will be all gender-neutral in the future,” she said.

To Hosono and her colleagues, Ann Causey and Genevieve Cook, the most important thing is creating a hairstyle that suits the client. “I don’t want to give someone a hairstyle just because it’s trendy,” Hosono explained.

Chromatin on @artafrica_mag #Chromatin is an #animated #gif project in collaboration with @francoisbeaurain It is a variation on Medina Dugger’s #Chroma photo project which celebrates women’s hair styles in #Nigeria . Chroma finds its inspiration in hair colour trends in #Lagos and by the late Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai #Ojeikere. Chromatin features #geometrical and #fractal constructions made from Nigerian hair designs which are geometrical and fractal constructs in-and-of themselves. The gifs offer deeper insight into the geometry behind African hairstyles, highlighting the importance of this practice specific to Africa and the diaspora. Recent scientific research has shown that fractals used to be at the heart of African design and art. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, African societies developed recursive patterns (with smaller parts mirroring larger parts), which informed the layout of African villages, hairdos and patterns in African art. These fractals can be found from ancient Egypt to Sub-Saharan Africa at large, but were completely ignored by the West, which conceptualized fractals much later. The fact that Europeans were unable to understand the subtleties of fractals, underscores a limiting, ethnocentric perspective which undoubtedly contributed to their assessment of African art and societies as primitive…Braiding is one of the rare contemporary cultural practice where fractals can still be found in Africa. African hair designs are among the last remaining remnants of an ancient African cultural pillar that has been almost completely annihilated by centuries of colonization and cultural domination… In biology, chromatin designates the macromolecule in which DNA is packed and it is known to adopt complex and repetitive geometry.
