]]>Enter Skye McAlpine. A home cook based between Venice and London, McAlpine knows her way through the Italian kitchen and is prepared to show you the ropes. “I cook largely Italian food,” she remarked once in an interview with Julia Berolzheimertold, “but one of my favorite recipes is my Auntie Effie’s butter shortbread—and that’s about as British as you can get!”
And when it comes to comfort food, one of her favorite dishes is Risotto. “Risotto is such comfort food,” she notes, “but the touch of lemon makes it a lovely, delicate and elegant dish. The kind of thing you could happily eat on the sofa straight from the pan, or proudly serve at a dinner party. Also: I always have a few lemons lying around in the kitchen and rice in the cupboard, so it’s the kind of dish that I can easily throw together without thinking.”
Luckily for us, McAlpine shares her cooking knowledge with others. Her recipes include traditional Italian dishes as well as reinvented favorites like scallops on the shell with pistachio gratin, grilled radicchio with pomegranate, and chocolate and amaretto custard.

]]>Her watercolor paintings capture the light and richness of detail that have come to be associated with Italy. “Light and its effect on color is the essence of my work,” she writes. “The sunshine of Italy saturates and energizes everything it touches, making colors sing.”
According to Cammerata, her fascination with light and color began at an early age, when she first became acquainted with Books on impressionist color theory. These ideas would be tested out later by her when she out began painting in oils. It wasn’t until after she completed a degree in fine arts, with a strong grounding in art history, that she decided to paint exclusively in watercolors. “I felt they were better able to capture the interplay of color and light,” she says.
“Each moment our senses are flooded with light and life,” she writes, poetically. “I want to capture that radiance, that aliveness, and create a painting that makes you want to immerse yourself in it.” She has been exploring light and color in her work ever since.
