]]> While most people toss away their old skateboards after they wear out, Justin LaRose decided to turn his into cool and useful everyday items.

 LaRose, who owns a CraftedbyJL shop, stacks damaged skateboard decks into blocks and then shapes them into colorful spoons, knifes bats, and even furniture. Unlike other artists, who use the same technique in order to create purely decorative items, this Long Beach-based skateboarder and carpenter focuses both on the aesthetics and the utility of his creations.

“To be able to take what was considered trash and meant for a landfill and transform it into new items is super motivating and crazy to me, and I’m psyched to be able to put this out there,” – LaRose says about his work.

The recycled skateboard cutting board party was off the hook this year for the holiday orders. I personally apologize to everyone who got their order late. Growth is a rad thing but being prepared for it is another story. I appreciate everyone’s patience. 1 or 20 units, there’s only one me with two hands working on one at a time cuz that’s how hand made gets made. No matter how streamline that plan and process is. One of my favorite projects from 2018 are these crazy recycled skateboard wooden goblets. The body and base match up and that maple stem brings a rad contrast and definite support and strength. Stoked on how they turned out. If you stack them all up you can see the curves of the skateboard noses and concave and how they all came from the same block of boards. Those colors though are a straight up electrical fire with inert gases involved. That green flame is like the three storms from Big Trouble in Little China… straight up gonna kick your ass with some fabled and mystical powers from David Lopan! And yup… just like all my work, 100% skated! These goblets have done crazy shit. One of my favorite mini pocket knives made this year. @kristin_larose and I got together to make this one of a kind for the one and only Tom Williamson of @albemarlefurnitureservice. He restores antique furniture with the skills of a master wizard. No bs he’s the real deal. Check out his feed. He’s got THE gnarliest before and after photos. I was stoked to work on a couple items with Tom and we traded some pieces. If you scroll through you can see he made the gorgeous Monticello Poplar handled bottle opener from wood that Thomas Jefferson personally planted (yup) and that dope recycled skateboard ring with silver backing. Tom has been a rad inspiration and has given epic support throughout my journey. Beyond grateful to work with him and soooo many other awesome makers across the world through @instagram. This one in particular went to the one and only @karlholm.design. Ann also took these gorgeous photos. She’s been an inspiration of mine for years and it’s truly and honor for me to have work in her hands. Her woodwork is stunning. Suuuuper clean and thoughtful designs behind all of it. Can’t even put these near ice cream or it’ll melt from those crazy electric colors. Too dope for the pope! Literally if the pope called and asked me for these I would say no! Ha!
