There are times that my children are so unresponse to my commands that particularly lethargic sloths would call them slow. It's at these moments (usually when we're trying to nail a mudane activity like getting dressed or going to bed) I find myself concocting a one off game to stir them from their dormant state (like this double horsey ride I do to the sound of black beauty every freaking morning to get the twins somewhere near clothes), only to find i executed it so well that I immediately regret it as I know this will now become ingrained in my repertoire & demanded of me again & again. I just hope I don't I end up like a comedian who had one joke they were famous for & dined out on for a while, but then were forced to repeat said joke from the rest of their miserable lives until the day they were found crying in their dressing room repeating over and over again "I am more than a single punch line!" One moment I'm method acting the crap out of my role as a granny named Lucy at an exclusive tea party hosted by the twins, the next they've abandoned me quicker than the entourage of a celebrity embroiled in a sex scandal to act out scenes from a budget version of king Kong. In that moment, I transformed from being an engaged parent to a 36 year old man in tent who's been left ponder his life choices whilst talking to himself in strange accents & drinking air from a wooden cup. Isn't parenting wonderful. There's a long list of things I've continued to do when the those with the attention span of an senile goldfish decide to sod off that includes colouring, Lego, playing with dolls & simple puzzles that I time myself to complete because, well, why not! Did anyone else spend their mornings as a kid completely unsupervised, glued to the slow flicking pages of ceefax / Teletext before actual programmes like dappledown farm, Jason & the wheeled warriors & the racoons came on? If you did, then that meant you were up before 5.30am, usually the only one moving in a house of slumbering people & free from parental control, which felt liberating! Well it seems that Ottie & Delilah have my genes as, while I did my rather convincing impression of a morgue resident, they've took the opportunity engage silent mode (a mode I didn't know they had) & descended into the darkness of downstairs to start the day on their own. I don't know what they did this morning, but I ran down in cold sweat to lots of open drawers, a nappy on the stairs, a dog wee on the floor that resembled lake superior from space & 2 children under a sofa laughing hysterically while eating dry cheerios. I guess they enjoyed their independence but now I'm terrified for tomorrow morning. No one chooses to have siblings. It's a decision that's thrust upon them & they have to just deal with it. That's why I Sometimes worry if my girls will be friends when they're older, as the sibling relationship is a complex one – one moment they're playing nicely together, the next theyre planning sororicide, but until we all live in a blade runneresque dystopia & genetic code is traded openly on the black market, no one gets to pick who they have a brother or sister – it's a lucky dip ladle from the soup of our parents bodily fluids (gross). But then I look at my own brother & sister – Yes we fought & yes we drove eachother nuts, but then you blink, become an adult & realise that these people that you shared your childhood with make up a significant part of your memories & who you are today. They are my friends and without them I simply wouldn't be me. How much do men really know about periods? As a teenager, periods weren't exactly top of my 'must know more things about' list. In fact, all I knew is that we boys used them as dismissive insults when girls were being short tempered – "oh, she's on her period" – said without ever really understanding how they effect the female body. I was basically an ill informed twat. But now that I'm knee deep in females that will all be premenstrual at some point in the future with me stuck in the middle, I feel the need to know more so I can understand & not just lie helplessly on the tracks, ready to be hit by the monthly run away hormone train that calls at Short Temper town, Sexual Desire Spa, Scatter Brain Central, Premenstrual Stress parkway & terminates abruptly in arguments & me making emergency late light runs to the shop for sanitary products I know nothing about (default to heavy flow stuff – standard) painkillers & enough chocolate to put willy Wonker out of business. So men (or women who answer for their male partners), how much do you know? What is a period? What's a cup? Can you get pregnant on your period? How's the vulva different to the vagina? Do women's periods really sync up and most importantly what's missing from the tray in the picture? In the days before algorithm based romance and soul destroying swiping, people used to use Friday night to get to know eachother – Friday night was date night & last night was no exception, just with one important difference. Said in the nicest way possible so as to avoid unnecessary enquires from social services – last night I decided to hire a baby sitter, got dressed up & took my eldest on a 'date' – something I can't emphasis the importance of enough. So what did it cost? Baby sitter ยฃ35, food ยฃ30, putting the world to rights over Asian food, cackling like a hyenna's high on laughing gas & getting to know just a little more about the intelligent, witty & beautiful young women my daughter is becoming – priceless.ย  Of course, we were chaperoned by @mother_of_daughters who suffers from serious FOMO, but it turns out that 3 isn't a crowd after all – it's just the right number to feel connected & to feel a little less like parents & a little more like friends. #ustime #makingtime #friendsnotparents #fatherofdaughters #dadlife #instadad #fod

Ah soft play. If you've never been, let me paint a picture for you. Close your eyes & imagine a gigantic fancy hamster cage made from wipe clean surfaces that a rainbow vomited over. Now imagine that cage is in a large room with a thermostat stuck on Sahara desert mode & has the same ventilation as a vacuum chamber. Now imagine what seems like 1000 feral kids ranging in ages from 1 to small adults all thrown in that cage, hydrated only by carbonated drinks and adrenaline, who know they're free from parental supervision for the next hour. Finally add in the stale smell of farts and feet. Congratulations, you're at softplay! @mother_of_daughters suggested we came here while she was out yesterday , but we all know that's code for "I spent 5 hours cleaning up after you lot yesterday & I want you to sod off so there's a chance the house won't look like a squat hit by a dirty bomb when I get home. So it seems that 'chicken pops' as the twins call them, have descended on our house like a biblical plague, so for the next week, @mother_of_daughters and I will be arguing about who's job is more important and who has to take time off to watch Ottie's & Delilah desperately try not to scratch. Having gone through this now 4 times, we know what to expect, but being relatively helpless when it comes to easing their discomfort still makes you feel as useful as a pair of left handed scissors at an international convention for right handed people. I wonder if they do they do those cones you see on animals in toddler size? Perhaps duct taping gloves on will be enough? Our house is fast becoming a commune for dolls that have cast aside the constraints of clothing & embraced their natural form in all its glory. In other words, it's a plastic nudist camp. I have drawers literally full of fake people rocking all sorts vaginas and penis's, ranging from limbless pound shop dolls with smooth under carriages all the way up to these rather detailed, anatomically correct ones that love nothing more than letting it all hang free, and I for one am tired of having a penis pushed it my face at bed time (there's a sentence I never thought I say). Through hosting this 'celebration of the flesh' I've also learnt that girls think Willie's are hands down, THE most hilarious thing on the planet, which is just great for me. Do boys find vaginas funny? Not that I'm aware. So why is our manhood worth more laughs than a sellout comedy gig?
