Rafael Silveira is a talented artist based in Curitiba, Brazil, who paints some of the most unique portraits you can find. His works are full of surreal elements and fantasy imagery that change the perspective of the artwork and discover something new each time your return to it.

At times, his works are disturbing from the bat, with brain flamingos, heart spiders, and dead flowers invading the subjects of the portraits. Other times, the setting is much more welcoming and calming, with flowers and idyllic nature taking the driver’s seat. But this is only until you notice the small details that make everything that much more unsettling.

Although Silveira’s artworks are best described as portraits, the artist himself doesn’t think they represent persons. Instead, they are a representation of moods.

“From inside, we are a strange mix of dreams, thoughts, feelings, and human meat. I think these portraits are not persons but moods,” Silveira explained in a recent interview.

Thanks to their uniqueness, Silveira’s portraits have already captured the attention of art lovers and art institutions from around the world. They are regularly featured in exhibitions in renowned galleries, with the next one being scheduled in London’s Dorothy Circus Gallery in early 2022. If you can’t make it there to see his works in person, check out more of them below.

Matthew Grabelsky is an artist from L.A. who was inspired by the New York City subway to create this series of surreal paintings. The subjects of his paintings are humans from the neck down, while their heads are replaced with animal heads.

Grabelsky lives in L.A., but he grew up in NYC. Additionally, he’s always been fascinated by Greek mythology, which contains many stories about human nature being represented by animals. “The characters are symbolic of the kinds of thoughts that lie under the surface of people’s minds, and they reveal that the most extraordinary can exist in the most ordinary of everyday settings,” the artist told Prohbtd.

Grabelsky graduated from Rice University with high honors. He earned a BA in Art and Art History. His work is often shown in exhibitions around the globe.

“Snack Time”, new oil painting for “Mother & Child” opening Friday at @dorothycircus in Rome. My Cousin’s wife and son modeled for this one. I had a piece of bamboo to use as a prop and my little cousin unprompted started to chew on it which was perfect for a baby panda. If you look at the subway window behind their heads you can see my mother reflected on the right. I thought this was a fitting touch for a mother and child themed show as I spent a lot of time sitting on my mom’s lap when I was a kid. . I’m very excited to be showing my work in Rome. I lived in Florence for 4 years while I was studying painting at @angelacademyofart and later on spent a winter in Rome. It was a magical experience and the Italian Renaissance and Baroque artists have had an outsized influence on my work. I’ve often wished I could go back in time to meet Rapheal and Michelangelo and It’s a thrill to exhibit in the city where they painted. . This group show has an amazing lineup and will be running concurrently at Dorothy Circus Gallery’s locations in Rome and London. If you can make it check it out! . Naoto Hattori is a Japanese artist and graphic designer who is creating impressive surreal paintings that will challenge your perception of reality.

Hattori got interested in art at a very young age before getting introduced with graphic design. After studying graphic design in Tokyo, he decided to move to New York where he enrolled in the School of Visual Arts and earned a degree in illustration.

Through the years, this talented artist managed to develop a distinctive style of painting which is characterized by surreal themes that are both disturbing but also impressive. Although his paintings can seem like computer-generated due to the high attention to details, all of Hattori’s works are painted by hand on a canvas using acrylics.

“My vision is like a dream, whether it’s a sweet dream, a nightmare, or just a trippy dream.” –  Hattori says about his works. “I try to see what’s really going on in my mind, and that’s a practice to increase my awareness in stream-of-consciousness creativity. I try not to label or think about what is supposed to be, just take it in as it is and paint whatever I see in my mind with no compromise. That way, I create my own vision.”
