Smoked Mugwort Sour: this half-alcoholic cocktail is flavorful and enticing, the perfect way to ring in the new year! Here's the recipe: Ingredients: 1 oz. gin 1 1/2 oz meyer lemon juice 3 tsp. elderflower syrup (or sugar syrup) 1 egg white some mugwort and a lighter Directions: 1.Smoke the juice: place the lemon juice in a shallow dish under a medium glass bowl. Light the mugwort with the lighter and place inside the bowl so that the smoke is sealed in there. Let sit for about 10 minutes to infuse, then take the gin out and dissipate the smoke. 2. Mix the cocktail: in a cocktail mixer, combine the smoked lemon juice, gin, elderflower syrup, and egg white with some ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a rocks glass and put a dash of bitters on top of the froth. Garnish with a meyer lemon slice and some mugwort that you light on fire. The scent of the charred mugwort is an important part of the sensory experience of this cocktail that is both grounding and uplifting. I designed this recipe as part of a larger ritual for New Years that spans overnight. It was a great way to reflect and re-set last year. This Stinging Nettle Moss Cake is one of my all-time favorite recipes. I love that it is naturally bright green due to the addition of cooked stinging nettle (which also lends lots of good nutrients to the cake as well.) Despite its green color, this cake doesn't taste like a salad – instead it tastes light and citrusy, with rich grapefruit-spruce buttercream. Yum. (And besides, it's incredibly easy to decorate.) It's my ode to the concept of "Moss Gazing," my Pacific Northwest take on the Japanese tradition of "Hanami," or "tree-blossom observing." Instead of reminding us of the frailty of life through ethereal blooms, moss reminds us of the constancy of life. If you're having trouble seeing the big picture, just look closer. I've had a bit of an obsession this fall with crescent moons, in case you couldn't tell! This is the easy, delicious, and nutritious soup I made to take to my event #StarSoup and it would be just as perfect for a hearty Winter Solstice Lunch! Stinging nettle broth gives a deeply nourishing base, while that fun purple color comes totally naturally from purple carrots. A sprinkling of the milky way (in the form of nettle salt, cheese stars, and a radish moon) make it extra special. It's also really easy to make this recipe vegetarian or vegan! Here's the recipe: Purple Carrot Nettle Soup: 1 Tbs. cooking oil 1/2 purple onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. ground coriander 4 purple carrots, chopped (about 1 1/2 c.) 2 purple potatoes, cut into small cubes (1 1/2 c.) 32 oz nettle broth or chicken broth (homemade) Nettle seed salt slices of radish cheese stars Directions: Saute onions. Add garlic and coriander until fragrant. Add broth and veggies. bring to boil and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Puree. Garnish soup with moons cut from radishes, a sprinkle of nettle seed salt, and stars cut out of cheese. Yesterday was absolutely magical. Together, a group of lucky strangers and I celebrated the wonders within the earth, deep underground in a beautiful cave. They crossed the threshold to adventure by braving a tall ladder down into a cavernous lava tube, where they found a beautiful table set amongst the rocks and sunbeams. We smashed clay lumps with hammers to reveal our lunch, we went spelunking deep into the cave to discover handmade treasures, we shared our stories of wonder and discovery, and we laughed. A lot.
