Iranian-American artist, Maysha Mohamedi, sculpts and paints, using materials from all over: from the tar that she collects on the beaches of Santa Barbara to tubes of Middle Eastern paint imported from her mother country of Iran. “Up until now I’ve mainly used oil paint, but I’m starting to use more materials that are handy like pencils, crayons, and acrylic paint; anything that’s easy to apply and dries quickly,” she explained in an interview with Matter of Hand.

With most of her work being abstract, her creative process is very much based on intuition. “I want to make paintings that feel very true,” says Mohamedi. “I think I can do that if I don’t control the inception of the idea very much. I’m sort of like a semipermeable membrane; I just look at what’s around me, watch the thoughts that I have, listen to my children, listen to the air. I’m this filter for whatever’s happening around me.”

As for her inspiration, she finds it in the mundanities of everyday life. “I’m inspired by the things my children say, I’m inspired by my husband, my parents, my heritage, visiting other artist’s studios and seeing the way they do things, watching somebody hold a pencil in an unusual way and the way they press it onto a surface,” she explains. “That inspires me because I think, Why not? Why can’t I try that? Everything inspires me. I’m a sponge and a filter.”

Based in Los Angeles, she has exhibited widely in LA and is also a founding member of the Los Angeles art collective, The Binder of Women. Her work has been profiled in publications such as the LA Times and Huffington Post, but you can also follow her online, via Instagram.

Alexey Luka’s signature style centers around abstract geometric shapes and chromatic variations – a style that according to him leans on his background in architecture. Based in Moscow, his art is a mish-mash of sorts, made using different techniques that include spray paints, acrylic paints, sculpture, and collage art. The result is a complex composition in which colors and geometric lines interact, resulting in a sort of puzzle to decipher.

Through the composition and decomposition of the shapes (a style that references to constructivism and neo-plasticism), Luka aims to tell a story and evoke a situation or a vision, in an entirely unusual and original way. The viewer is left, therefore, to reconstruct and consequently interpret the image before him, uncovering from within it faces, characters, and landscapes.

“My works are like an everyday diary,” Luka further relayed in an interview with Another Fine Mess. “A chronicle of what I see around me, around my friends. My works are like a puzzle – people try to find different recognizable shapes that are mixed with abstract geometry. It could be anything, a man walking with his dog, or a large family waiting for their lunch. There is always a story to be found in my works. I try to show typical situations from a different angle.”

His abstract art begins with a sketch on paper. It is only when the sketch is done that Luka chooses the technique he prefers for realizing his idea. His pieces take anything from a couple of days to months to complete. Take a look at some of his work in the gallery below:

The three-part series called “Mimic” was created after studying Picasso’s work for years. Aqil’s style breathes new life into his version of Picasso’s paintings by using modern colors and textures. Some feature everyday objects such as hair dryer, flower vase and different shapes of bottles.

“Picasso is my all-time favorite artist,” Aqil told Insider. “His work and style have always inspired me.” He said that keeping things “modern yet classic” was a vital part of interpreting Picasso’s work. He also wanted to preserve Picasso’s signature abstract style when illustrating faces.

“[Picasso] used the most unusual shapes with some odd perspective to enrich his desired expressions,” Aqil explained. “He just had an amazing sense of how to decode them.”
