“I used to use a lot of ink and watercolor,” she recalled in an interview with Catapult, “then I felt like I’d reached a dead-end with how far I could take the media. I did some experimenting with different media within different projects at university.” According to Lock, it was while studying at the Cambridge School of Art that she began leaning towards colored pencils.

“When I was working on Angela Carter’s short story ‘The Erl King,’ I came across this way of working by accident—as I tried to get some of the feeling from the story into the mark-making with the colored pencils,” she explains. “I think my style has developed since then, but I still try to carry that emotive mark-making with me on different projects.”

Now based in West Yorkshire, Lock works as a freelance illustrator with her clients including brands like Intercom, Catapult, Bulletin Magazine, and the Covent Gardener. Each piece, whether personal or commercial begins with research and some sketches in her sketchbook. Once the final sketch has been chosen, I move onto the final piece,” says Lock. “Sometimes I start with a loose, faint sketch, and then go on to draw the final on top. Sometimes I just start with a blank piece of paper and work from there.”

Winter has only just begun and we’re already dreaming of summer. As a feeling of drowsiness threatens to engulf us completely, Ruby Taylor’s vibrant illustrations bring us back to life.

Based in the UK, Taylor’s illustrations very much revolve around color. Reds, yellows, and greens pop up quite a bit with the result being a summery color palette. Her chosen topics seem to follow suit and themes like vacation, tropical fruit, and light alcoholic beverages seem to dominate her portfolio.

According to Taylor, her inspiration comes from the world around her, but she is especially drawn to old printed ephemera, vintage illustrations, and hand-painted signage. Since graduating in 2012 with a degree in Illustration from Bristol UWE, she’s worked with notable clients such as Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Tory Burch, and Adidas.

Bright, warm, pink, playfully colored paintings are the mark of Vancouver-born Andy Dixon’s art. His paintings usually feature living rooms packed with objects, shapes, and colors, yet they never overwhelm us, as the colorful mix makes us feel comfort and the desire for the nice things.

Dixon is told to explore “the psychology of value” and the “taboo entanglement of fine art and luxury” in his rich body of work. This is done through the images of interiors of living rooms in London and Brooklyn homes, which leave us aching for nice stuff in our homes, as well.

It isn’t just the stuff in the paintings that makes us want them – but the color patterns and brush strokes, as well. In fact, this employment of certain colors, such as pink or red, is part of Dixon’s exploration of the commodification of art in terms of what elements can affect the cost of a painting.

Through it, Dixon speaks about how arbitrary elements have an effect on sales. For instance, predominantly red paintings sell at a higher price in the Asian market, as the color red is culturally lucky.
