For some, the city life is fun and exciting. The culture, the constant movement, and the noise of the big city can be so alluring. But Jonna Jinton longed to get away from all of that. Back in  2010, she was a student in her hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. She was living in a tiny apartment and was trying to figure out what to do with her life between working and studying. Then, she decided to leave it all behind.

She left her apartment, quit school and moved to Grundtjärn, a tiny village with only ten inhabitants, 100 miles away from her hometown, She wanted to get in touch with nature, and live a simpler life.

It wasn’t simple at first. Her house was old, the village was far away from anything. She had to figure out how to live without all the modern comforts the city had to offer. The long cold winters, the isolation and the maintenance of the house made the entire experience much less enchanting than she had imagined it.

But with time, she got used to the different pace of her new life, and finally found in nature what she was missing in the city – inspiration. She started making art and sharing her life with others on social media. Finally, she found her calling.

Today, Jonna is still living in the same remote village and spending her time making art and living a more traditional life. She shares her experiences with over 1 million subscribers on YouTube, and finally feels connected – to nature, and to others.

2019, I am so grateful that I barely can't find the words. It was the most beautiful year of my life so far. Some kind of shift in energy took place, and I really learned the power of letting go of control, to let universe work for you. . It was a year that brought me a deeper clarity to what I really want to do in life, and let go of all the "what I should do". A feeling of freedom inside of me, that I have not really felt the same way before. . This year I also started meditating for at least 10 minutes every day, and I am so incredible thankful for finally opening up that door. It definitely have a huge part in making this year so beautiful. If I could give you only one advice from my own experiences this year, it would be to take a couple of minutes for yourself every day, to close your eyes, breathe and step into the limitless world inside of you. (If your not already doing that). . This year I also married the love of my life. My soulmate Johan. I feel like we lived a thousands of lifetimes together before. Married or not, I always knew we are inseparable. But I still get tingles in my stomach everytime I get to introduce him for someone as "my husband". It just feels so good. . We also moved to the house of our dreams. An old homestead that I've been dreaming about for many years. A place where my ancestors lived 400 years ago. Its not only a house. Its our home ❤ . So thank you 2019. I will let the gratitude I feel now shape the foundation of 2020. Thank you everyone for sharing this year with me. For all your beautiful comments and engagement. I wish you all the good things in the world. Let this year bring you ease, joy and freedom ❤🙏 Much love and light to all of you! 💛

Paris is an enchanted city. It’s beautiful, rich in culture and history, and always fashionable. Most people fantasize about spending a few weeks there. Carin Olsson was no different. back in 2012 she packed a bag and moved to Paris for four months.

Carin’s original goal was to spend some time in the city of lights to learn French. The Stockholm-based blogger’s entire French vocabulary consisted of “bonjour” and “merci”, and she hoped that by immersing herself in the language she could master it.

When those four months were up, it was time for Carin to go back home, but her love affair with France wasn’t over. If anything, her love of French culture only intensified, and she started making plans to move there permanently.

Less than a year after her first trip to Paris, Carin quit her job, said goodbye to her family and hopped on a plane that would take her to her new life in France. Today Carin spends her days in Paris, and manages a successful career as an online influencer, with over 800k followers on Instagram!

Her Instagram account and her blog, both named Paris in Four Months, are dedicated to art, style, and culture in the most beautiful city in the world. Looking at Carin’s photos, it’s hard not to but a one-way ticket to Paris and never look back.

Old paintings carry so much value and meaning. Unfortunately, they also carry dirt and grime. Which is why Julian Baumgartner has dedicated his life to cleaning them.

Julian Baumgartner is an art restoration expert and owner of the oldest restoration studio in Chicago. His job is to take old paintings, get rid of the dust and dirt, patch them up where needed and restore them to the former glory.

Julian learned the craft from his father, who was the founder of the Baumgartner restoration studio and trained for years, first studying art and painting and then working as an apprentice in the studio and learning the many processes, techniques, and skills involved in restoring a painting.

Restoration is a delicate, risky job. Old paintings are fragile and using the wrong materials can cause them irreversible damage. Julian works slowly and meticulously to restore each painting and make sure it stays in top shape for years.

Julian shares his process with fans all over the world via his YouTube channel, Baumgartner Restoration. This allows him to spread awareness of the delicate art of restoration, show people how fine art looks like, and teach about the proper way to handle paintings. If you love art, you’ll get a kick out of watching ancient paintings come back to life under Julian’s care.

Tattoos. We all know about them, some of us – more and more, in fact – have them. But permanently inking one’s skin is a tradition that has developed in many different societies, with all sorts of meanings.

In New Zealand, the indigenous Maori people decorated their skin with intricate black-and-white design. Women would traditionally tattoo their chink with “moko kauae”, chin tattoos, right under their lower lip. Moko kauae tattoos were not only for beauty – they were considered sacred and indicated the wearer’s tribe, status, and personal story.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4G7x2RAz9U/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

But unfortunately, these old traditions have slowly disappeared since the arrival of European settlers to New Zealand. In Europe, tattoos were associated with the lower class and considered ugly, so Maori people were discouraged from wearing them.

Today, however, tattoos are once again considered a form of art and are more and more accepted by the general population. And with “regular” tattoos, the moko kauae is also making a comeback.

Today, women of Maori descend once again decorate their chins with the moko kauae their ancestors wore proudly. Some paint it over their skin occasionally, and some get a permanent tattoo. All of them look beautiful and inspiring with their gorgeous moko kauae.

I was called to you by tipuna, and met you at Te pā o Toikairākau, atop Te Mātārae o Kōhi one beautiful, sunny day in 2009. Called there to see your essence beside your tipuna Toroa. My eyes met our pāpā and my head bowed to him at the enormous mana he emanated. My tinana shook at his presence, powerful and commanding, and he spoke only these words as he held a patu parāoa in his hand.. “Mai i tēnei wā,mai i tēnei wā” *From now on I was to now become your caretaker. And as I sighted a small boy at his side, I cried physical tears, standing there alone on top of this tipuna pā site at Kōhi point and I knew with every part of me…. that you were to be my son, that you were coming, that I would carry you in my whare and become your mother. Not long before I saw your tipuna kuia at te ana o Muriwai and was asked, without words, if I would receive the gift of carrying a child for them. I gave that to them that day, my heart, and to you,my son. I knew your name. I heard it as I drove up Ōmokoroa…in our karakia that has resonated through pā sites, over rituals, sent through whare tipuna and across marae ātea…and it resounded clearly and powerfully… the line…’i Te Rae o Kōhi’… Tō ingoa. Your name. Yours bestowed upon you by your keepers. Given to you for reasons only they know, dutifully fulfilled by me. And Toroa gently, placed his hand on your small back and guided you to me. You came to my side and I looked at your wairua and I smiled.. “Tēnā koe my son”… and I gave my mihi to you both and left with a full heart, that beautiful sunny day, knowing that one day soon you would become a part of me, and be born into the world. I have loved you since that moment, and I will love you until the end of time, and in all my challenges and failings and all my wins and moments of joy, you are among my greatest teachers son. Everyone loves piñatas, both kids and adults. This artist makes unique looking piñatas from illuminated manuscripts. Robert Benavidez makes a different kind of art. The talented artist looks to literature and famous paintings to find materials for his beautiful metallic piñatas. One of such is the Hieronymus Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights.

Robert is based in Los Angeles and has created illuminated piñatas with characters from the Luttrell Psalter. This popular medieval manuscript contains lots of mythical creatures and hybrid beasts. The artist explores these creatures further by creating three-dimensional sculptures with traditional motifs.

The artist has been taking part in art exhibitions in his region and hopes to expand his reach to other parts of the world. He posts all his special piñata artworks in his Instagram page as well as his website. See some of his work in the gallery below.
