This Artist Breaths New Life Into Ancient Paintings

Old paintings carry so much value and meaning. Unfortunately, they also carry dirt and grime. Which is why Julian Baumgartner has dedicated his life to cleaning them.

Julian Baumgartner is an art restoration expert and owner of the oldest restoration studio in Chicago. His job is to take old paintings, get rid of the dust and dirt, patch them up where needed and restore them to the former glory.

Julian learned the craft from his father, who was the founder of the Baumgartner restoration studio and trained for years, first studying art and painting and then working as an apprentice in the studio and learning the many processes, techniques, and skills involved in restoring a painting.

Restoration is a delicate, risky job. Old paintings are fragile and using the wrong materials can cause them irreversible damage. Julian works slowly and meticulously to restore each painting and make sure it stays in top shape for years.

Julian shares his process with fans all over the world via his YouTube channel, Baumgartner Restoration. This allows him to spread awareness of the delicate art of restoration, show people how fine art looks like, and teach about the proper way to handle paintings. If you love art, you’ll get a kick out of watching ancient paintings come back to life under Julian’s care.
