Ed Fairburn describes his art as a direct combination of cartography and portraiture. Using traditional materials such as ink and pencil, he intervenes with a range of original maps, making gradual changes to contours, roads and other patterns. These changes allow him to tease out the human form, resulting in a comfortable coexistence of figure and landscape.

The results are striking portraits that blend into the paper maps upon which they were illustrated. According to Fairburn, his aim with these works is to preserve the functionality of each map by feeding the composition instead of fighting it. To accomplish this, he often spends hours studying each map before beginning any physical processes.

“I like a map that’s easy to fold away, but I don’t let that influence my choice,” he added in an interview with yatzer in which he described his preferred materials. “I’ll either source my maps from charity shops or old book shops – we have lots of both here in the UK,” he explained. “If I’m working on a specific commission I’ll usually source a map on the internet to make the most suitable choice, in terms of the location. When considering a map to work on, I look at the patterns, orientation, and other characteristics – I usually find that the more ‘cluttered’ maps offer the most scope.”

Using the found paper maps as his canvas, Fairburn is interested in the subtlety of each synchronization, and the way in which each completed map behaves more like a portrait when viewed from further away. Take a closer look:

New York-based designer and inventor, Archie Archambault, simplifies complex ideas and constructs through minimalist maps and diagrams, with the added bonus of being aesthetically pleasing.

“The best way to get un-lost is draw a map,” he writes on his website, explaining that while living in Portland (and mostly getting lost) he drew a circular map of the city which helped him understand better his whereabouts. It was then that the brand Archie’s Press was born.

Having studied Art and Philosophy at Colorado College, Urban Design at Harvard, and Advertising at Wieden+Kennedy, Archambault travels all over the world meeting people and exploring cities. After asking residents a lot of questions and thinking really really hard, he assembles to map, referencing current and past maps.

His original idea has since unfolded into many other maps of different subjects, showing their structures in simple and intuitive ways. “I make letterpress ‘maps from the mind’ of cities, planets, organs, and many other subjects,” he explained in an interview with the Ohh Deer blog. “They’re all super-simple distillations of the complex ideas.”

“When I started taking this design practice seriously, I went in a dozen different directions,” he recalled. “Most of it was type and image with quippy or impactful messages. I made things that were funny, clever, crude, and everything in-between, but the maps were by far the biggest hit and I really enjoyed making them. Then my brain became like this map-thinking machine and I stopped thinking about other things.”

Guided by the thought that maps can be gorgeously colored and precise, Robert Szucs presents the most beautiful maps that show you the world’s drainage basins.

Robert Szucs is a Hungarian cartographer and GIS analyst who travels the world to create astonishing maps by using vivid colors to create a more noticeable effect. These maps show the flow of streams into main rivers, and main rivers into the sea (or their final destination) with incredible accuracy. He manages to do this by using GIS – Geographic Information Systems. Using GIS, he collects data about rivers and streams which allows him to create real visual representations of the current state.

Szucs used to work in England before he decided that traveling is more suitable for him, so he started volunteering his mapmaking skills for different NGOs. Up until now, he has worked alongside archeologists on the Caribbean island, in an orangutan conservation program in Indonesian Borneo, and with marine biologists in Alaska. He says that all his moves are temporary and that it’s his way for developing his skills and also experiencing the world.

We hope this talented cartographer will keep on with his work and give us more surprises.

Graphic artist, known as DAU-DAW creates fictional maps that honor nature, animals, and the bond that binds them together. The artist grew up in the countryside of Aarhus, Denmark, where he developed a huge passion for his natural surroundings, which you can clearly see in his work.

“The ‘maps’ are all divided into different countries and every mountain, every lake, every city and every ocean in these pieces are named after everything relevant to the title of each piece,” the artist wrote on Bored Panda. “Take for example Elephantidae – Land of the Elephant. Everything in this ‘map’ is named after both fictional and actual elephant species that are either extinct or still around today.”

To finish each map, DAU-DAW needs between a few days to several weeks. Scroll down and check out his creations below.
