After closing her store, the 32-year-old Dutch artist Anouk Böhmer began creating enchanting paper flowers. She gets her inspiration from the talented artist Ann Wood and from nature that surrounds her. She says that if she sees blooms growing, she needs to stop and see, and take a lot of pictures.

“I like to imitate nature. This is quite a challenge, but if it succeeds it gives a kick. I study real flowers and view a huge number of photos and read books. This way I see the beautiful details of the real flowers and try to copy them from paper,” the artist told in an interview for Ballpit and added that she likes interacting with other artists and to see what people can make with their hands.

“I think artists show you their way of how they see the world in their art and that’s sometimes a reflection of your own thoughts, but many times it gives you more inspiration by seeing their view and think about life.”

Paper artist Emily Paluska makes incredibly realistic flower bouquets out of paper. Describing herself as a botanical artist, she sort of stumbled upon her craft by chance. “I had seen paper flowers sporadically online and thought it might be a fun thing to try,” she writes on her website. “I had no idea what I was doing but I sat on the floor of my bedroom watching videos and looking at pictures of plants, learning as I went.”

A 100% self-taught artist, she says that making something from nothing with your hands is one of the most gratifying feelings you can have. “After being a lifetime appreciator of the arts, I never considered myself an artist,” she admits. “I used to think an artist was only someone that could paint or draw. I know now that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The creative world is vast and there is room for everyone.”

Her inspiration comes from walks around her neighborhood and garden visits. “Some of the best gardens I’ve ever seen are in Capitol Hill,” she told Ballpitmag. “I also have easy access to the National Botanic Garden, the Arboretum and I have family in Pennsylvania where I can go to Longwood Gardens a few times a year. Seeing a flower in real life is what triggers my creativity and desire to recreate it in paper.”

According to Paluska, flowers are the sort of natural glue that keeps us connected to where we came from and where we’re going. Take a look at some of her paper gardens in the gallery below.

I just wanted to take a moment to focus solely on a workshop recap. In this last year, I taught 35 (!!!!) workshops in DC and Austin. I both can't believe and totally believe there was that many. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I had to take COMM101 five times in college because I would drop the class right before the day I had to give a speech. Public speaking made me want to cut out a hole in the earth and fall down into it so the reality that I now teach groups as large as 30 people without batting an eye, is bonkers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I couldn't have taught this many without all of the amazing venues that have hosted me this year: @steadfastsupplydc, @thelemoncollective, @shopmadeindc, @thepapercraftpantry, @appointedco, @solidstatedc, etc… to name a few! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Most importantly, I couldn't have taught these workshops without all of you interested in learning how to make paper flowers. There are so many students that take multiple classes and who have taken what they've learned and run with it and made it their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I don't take it lightly that you've not only made a financial investment but even more significantly, your time. Life is busy and you setting aside a 3 hour window to take time away from your lives to just sit and create, is amazing to me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, THANK YOU! I hope to add new flowers to the schedule in the new year as well as new venues. There's one in 2020 that I am literally pinching myself about. If you're not local, I hope to finally have online classes and paper flower kits available to you in the spring. I am eternally grateful and looking forward to seeing some of you in the next decade! xo⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📷 : @laurametzlerphoto⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💄 : @claireashleybeauty

Dutch artist Anne ten Donkelaar creates ethereal pieces of art that take after nature. Composed of real flowers (and sometimes, real butterflies) as well as two-dimensional representations she finds in books, she makes intricate collages that are kept and protected under glass, like marvelous specimens that deserve a closer look.

“A damaged butterfly, a broken twig, a bumblebee, some strangely grown weeds: I find all these unique discoveries in my path and then take them home to my studio,” she writes on her website. “Here, I take my time to explore the objects and try to work out how I can show each one to its best advantage.”

She collects her material from a variety of sources: the flowers she grows in her garden, second-hand picture books, and butterflies from the botanical garden in Utrecht. It’s these finds which inspire her work, allowing her to invent her own stories about their former existence. By protecting these pieces under glass, she gives the objects a second life, hoping to inspire people to make up their own stories about them.

“I hope it gives joy and that it inspires,” she said in an interview with Create Magazine. With more than 25k fans on Instagram, it’s clear that people are inspired.

Stephanie Redlinger made her very first paper flowers for her wedding bouquet and husband’s boutonniere. This was back in 2015, but it was only a couple years later that she immersed herself completely, after participating in a paper flower making workshop taught by Tiffanie Turner. Nowadays, with thousands of followers on Instagram, she considers herself a botanical artist.

Working primarily with paper (mainly fine crepe paper), she does copious amounts of research on her subjects both before and during the making process. Her research includes studying live plants and flowers, but also online image searches and combing through books and magazines.

“I’ve always loved paper,” she admitted in an interview with Ballpitmag, stating that the obsession likely started with Lisa Frank stationery when she was very young. “My current use of fine crepe paper is yet another iteration of my love for paper,” she admits. “I love the tactile feel of good paper. The smell of old paper. The myriad forms paper can take. I also love that paper often seems ephemeral and delicate, but under the right circumstances, it can last lifetimes.”

Based in Boulder, Colorado, where she shares a home with her husband, two kids, and their dog, Redlinger is very much inspired by her natural surroundings. “There’s a lot of open space around my home in Colorado, and I love watching the colors of the landscape change throughout the seasons,” she says. “I visit plant nurseries a lot, and botanical gardens when I can, to see what’s blooming. And I’ve recently become enamored with the floral paintings of Odilon Redon.”
