With more than 200k fans on Instagram alone, Liz Carlson, aka the Young Adventuress is a celebrated travel blogger and a New Zealand celebrity. “A friend once described me as cynical but kind in equal measure, a disturbingly accurate bio,” writes the American based in New Zealand blogger. “If you’re a fan of chaos, brutal honesty, sarcasm and girls who think they are wittier than they actually are, then you’ve come to the place. No, no don’t run away just yet.”

Carlson’s blog post dedicated to the solo female traveler, and presenting a no-filter manifesto to solo traveling, is our first stop. “Without sounding incredibly cheesy, I think my happiest moments are when I get emails and messages from readers asking advice about traveling the world, alone, female or otherwise,” writes Carlson. “The older I get and the more experience I gain roaming the world and talking with strangers, the more and more conscious of the gap between men and women in so many different spheres—especially even in the US—I become.”

Her first necessary tip? Be brave and don’t be afraid to travel alone. “For the number of times I legitimately felt in danger, I can give you 1000 examples of beautiful, friendly, and unique moments that surprised me to no end while traveling.”

We can’t wait to follow her lead!

Travel writer and social media manager Kelly Lack is always up for a good adventure. Based in San Francisco, her work has appeared in publications like Martha Stewart Weddings, Travel + Leisure, and AFAR, and her clients include brands like Zappos, Conde Nast Traveler, and One Kings Lane.

Aside from writing, she’s also amassed an impressive following on Instagram, where she shares her experiences with her fans. “When I’m traveling, I go nuts trying to capture it all from sweeping scenic shots to quiet moments in markets to the comings and goings of locals,” she admitted once in an interview with Lonny

But with travel being more or less impossible these past months, Lack stays close to home. In a piece she wrote for Harper’s BAZAAR, she sums up the 88 things to do and see in San Francisco. Her recommendations include spending the afternoon at Mission Dolores Park (which she calls “the ultimate hipster hang”), and experiencing the Camera Obscura in the shadow of the Cliff House.

“I love an adventure,” says Lack, “I get bored when standing still. I also love how [traveling] smashes the pre-conceived notions you have about the world, even when you don’t realize you have them! We’re all human, trying to get by and struggling with and finding joy in the same things—only in different settings.”

Make sure you follow her lead when visiting California (or elsewhere).

Remember the days not long ago when traveling was encouraged and seeking the great outdoors wasn’t considered a luxury? Travel influencer Jenny Anderson might just reignite that dormant passion for exploration.

With some 19,000 fans on Instagram alone, Anderson (aka Girl of 10,000 Lakes) is especially keen on lakes and fishing. Alongside her husband and two small children, she captures her enviable adventures. Those include ice fishing and open sky camping. An avid fisher, she also loves canoeing.

“There are few places I’d rather be than canoeing in the Boundary Waters, ice fishing on Mille Lacs, or enjoying lake life at the cabin,” she shared on her website.

“I think everyone should experience the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at least once in their lifetime,” she later added. “And if you can, do it with an outfitter.

“Whether it’s the pristine waters or secluded wilderness, the call of loons, eagles soaring above, the milkiest of milky ways, or the fantastic fishing—there are so many reasons Nick and I go back several times every year.”

According to Anderson, she hopes to inspire others to seek out adventures (her bio tag aptly reading: Evoking inspiration & wonder through the beauty of the great outdoors).

“I’m not a health care expert, a scientist, or a politician—but I am good at photos, videos, & using technology to connect with others,” she wrote in a recent candid Instagram post.

“My hope is to foster some optimism, positivity, connectedness, & joy while many of us stay tucked away at home more than usual. The world is still moving along, even if it might not feel like it. And by all means, get outdoors! Breathe in that fresh air! It’s good for you.”

We might just take her lead.

2021 has been rough and 2022 might turn out much easier, but if there’s a silver lining to any of this it’s the understanding that life is uncertain and fleeting.

Travel bloggers Danielle and Tommy of Slow Car Fast Home know this best: “If this year has taught us anything, it’s that life is short, and fragile and we’re not promised consistency or anything really from one year to the next,” they reflected in a recent Instagram post.

“Get after what you want, friends! We have absolutely no idea what this next year will look like for us or where we’ll be in the next 12 months and that’s 100000% okay with us.”

The seasoned travelers put their money where their mouth is. Having lived on the road since 2016, the two have taken on the RV lifestyle alongside their two pooches, Missy and Trip. Their travels have taken them so far to almost all of the lower 48 states in the United States, all over Canada, and up and down Mexico’s Baja Peninsula.

Their adventure also includes renovating their vehicles and sharing before-and-after photos with their growing audience online (to date, their Instagram page has amassed some 75k followers).

“We’ve learned so much from our time on the road, and have both grown so much from this entire experience,” Danielle and Tommy write on their website. “From learning how to DIY our RV renovation, to learning how to creating multiple streams of income to sustain our lifestyle. It’s not always easy or beautiful, but life was meant to be an adventure!”

And the past year hasn’t slowed them down. If anything, their commitment to living in the here and now has never been stronger. “We’re pushing ourselves forward and coming out on the other side working harder than ever on things we’ve always wanted to do,” they stress.

The past year has been rough, no doubt about it. But if there’s one group of people who’ve been hit extra hard, it’s those who rely on traveling and tourism for a living. For travel vlogger Louis John Cole, Covid has been an opportunity to further explore his unique lifestyle—a nomadic lifestyle that is.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CI0JrshhYuf/

A travel guru if there ever was one, Cole has amassed two million subscribers on YouTube and another one million on Instagram. Alongside his fiancé, Raya (a travel blogger herself), he shares his life on the road, treating life as a constant adventure.

“As I reflect back over this crazy year, as it comes to an end, the thing I’m most grateful for is having the most amazing, supportive, and incredible woman in my life!” wrote Cole in a recent Instagram post.

His most recent adventure? Heading across the US and then down to Costa Rica with a converted school bus, aptly nicknamed The Happiness Bus. Indeed, happiness seems to be the key to Cole’s way of life, and his enthusiasm is very much contagious.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CN9oxHphVXd/

His advice to other aspiring travel bloggers (and influencers in general)? “Come from a place of being passionate about capturing and sharing moments—not straight from this mentality that [you] want to make money or jump straight into having Instagram as a revenue generator or a business.”

“That’s an added bonus if you can get to that stage,” explained Cole in a chat with Entrepreneur. “But if that’s your initial goal, it could be quite tricky especially if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing. I think the audience can really notice that as well.”

Travel blogger and Instagram sensation Michelle Halpern describes herself as living proof that it’s never too late to change your life, follow a dream, or throw all of society’s expectations out the window to do things on your own terms.

In Halpern’s case, throwing society’s expectations out the window meant leaving her corporate job in fashion at the end of 2015 to go on a year-long round-the-world adventure.

Little did she know that this spontaneous adventure would end up changing the course of her career and reshape the way she thinks about work and life as well. Nowadays, Halpern’s goal is to help others realize their dreams. Her motto (and subsequent blog name) is “Live Like it’s the Weekend”, and doesn’t it sound nice?

“For me, living like it’s the weekend means saying yes to opportunities and invitations because I have the freedom to do so,” explains Halpern. “It means taking spur of the moment adventures to discover something new and beautiful because I don’t have to ask anyone else’s permission.”

Halpern’s optimism is refreshing, especially given the circumstances. In a recent blog post, where she recapped 2020, she reflected on the year’s little joyful moments.

An avid traveler with over 40 countries under her belt, Halpern didn’t let 2020 stop her from exploring, though these explorations were largely restricted to her “backyard”, meaning California.

“This year made me appreciate how much there is to explore in my own backyard and it showed me that even when travel fully opens back up again, I don’t need to take a 13-hour flight to arrive somewhere incredible,” she observed. “There are still so many destinations on my own California bucket list, not to mention just a short drive away in other states.”

And looking ahead, Halpern admits she’s willing to tweak her lifestyle to allow some time for family gatherings and reunions.

“While last year seemed to smash down a lot of my big travel goals, this year I’m going into the year taking a different approach to what I want to accomplish,” she writes. “I also want to work at putting more boundaries in place when it comes to balancing work and play.”

Her blog is a great teaching tool for people looking to spice up their daily routines and truly live like it’s the weekend.

While most of us have spent 2020 locked indoors, single mother Evie Farrell and her 10-year-old daughter Emmie have found a perfect solution for quarantine.

After dedicating the past years to traveling full time, they decided to settle down in Magnetic Island on the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland, Australia, sharing their island adventures online.

The idea to travel, explains Evie, came after some reflection. “I’ve always thought that in 10 years, my daughter Emmie wouldn’t thank me for installing a brand new kitchen and bathroom in our home, but she would thank me for filling her early years with amazing experiences, learnings, and sights and sounds from around the world,” she wrote on her website.

“I’ve realized that working until I retire and then finally doing what makes me happy is not what I want my life to be about,” she adds. “I don’t want to work all through Emmie’s childhood. I want to enjoy our time together now and learn, explore, and adventure together.”

Her life-changing choice didn’t go unnoticed, with some 110,000 followers on Instagram alone.

We wish the two well on their journeys. In the meantime … here are some enviable highlights from their dedicated Instagram page!

As we welcome 2021, we look forward to a time in the (hopefully) near future when things return to a new normal. But how will travel look like after Covid? A recent survey found that 63% of us aim to travel the same or more once the pandemic is over.

Hopefully, when we do resume traveling, we’ll do so with more awareness. “Reducing your carbon footprint can come in many forms, and even small steps can have a significant impact,” writes Alison Abbott from Green With Renvy—a platform dedicated to eco-friendly travels.

Her platform is a thought-out teaching tool that aims to help travelers to consider alternative destinations and adventures when planning a vacation. It also points out the importance of mindfulness in traveling.

“I focus on eco-friendly and responsible travel,” Abbott further explained in an interview with Travel Awaits. “With over a billion people traveling, it’s important to know where your dollars are going. A few simple steps can help to make the industry and destinations a lot more sustainable.”

According to Abbott, the last 40 years has seen tourism grow from 189 million people traveling the planet to over one billion, and by 2030, that number is expected to reach 1.8 billion.

As we begin to get vaccinated and travel gradually eases up, now is the time to take some crucial steps so that our choices align with our eco-interests and values.

Alice Yeh describes herself as a semi-professional wanderer. A tech sales executive by day and travel blogger by night, Yeh admits she’s always up for an adventure and spontaneous last-minute trips.

But being a travel blogger in the age of COVID is next to impossible. Still, according to Yeh, a girl’s gotta what she’s gotta do to stay sane and find ways to satisfy her “travelholic wanderlust.” In her most recent post, she shares the silver lining to COVID, explaining she now sticks to local traveling.

“2020 is the year of US National Parks!” writes Yeh, explaining that since there will be no more international trips for the rest of the year and most likely 2021, it’s all about exploring the great outdoors in the US.

Having visited over 50 countries, Yeh has lived so far in Philadelphia, New York, Hong Kong, London, and Singapore. “My love for travel is deeply rooted in my curiosity and desire to learn,” she explains in her bio. “My mom even told me that when I was a kid, she could never take her eyes off of me because as soon as she turned around, I’d be gone—off in my own world exploring,” she recalls.

According to Yeh, when she was a kid, her parents would take her on road trips all around the US to visit National Parks. “As immigrants, they wanted to experience what the new home country had to offer,” she reflects. “Even though we never actually went camping (my first camping experience was during college with schoolmates), I was always amazed by the beauty that nature had to offer. The US is a huge, diverse country.”

Her blog and Instagram page might just inspire you to take a break and hit the road – literally speaking.

✈ So I did a thing… I actually flew over the long 4th of July holiday weekend! That's right… I took a flight during the pandemic!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😬 Emphasis on during not post-pandemic because post implies something is over. And let’s be real here. COVID-19 is far from over, especially in the US.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤪 After quarantining at home for 4 months, I really needed to scratch my travel itch. Stir crazy would be an understatement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤷‍♀️ It seemed like everyone I knew was getting out of town for the long weekend. I know I’m not the only one who was feeling the need to escape the house (or tiny apartment in my case) and decided “F*** it.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌵 After evaluating all the options and trying to figure out where to go last-minute, the boyfriend and I decided to jet down to Joshua Tree.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✈ Instead of driving 8 hours from San Francisco (and considering we’d have to drive back), we booked a flight from SFO to LAX 6 days before departure. We took a lot of things into consideration and decided to take the risk for a short haul flight (~1 hour).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😳 So what was it like? A few things were the same and a few were quite different.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😷 I have never in my life seen SFO and LAX so empty with no security lines. As expected, everything was closed. Masks were required. People mostly followed social distancing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💻 For more details on my flight experience, read my blog post (link in bio). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤔 I’m not recommending flying or traveling. That’s a personal decision to make. We all need to do our own research and assess our own health, activity, and risk levels. Everyone will have different levels of risk tolerance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔎 Do research on your destination and their rules. You may be traveling to/from a place that’s less/more restrictive and has a higher/lower number of cases. Consult a doctor if you need to.

Travel blogger Brenna Holeman has earned her stripes when it comes to traveling. Having visited over 100 countries over 13 years, many of them solo, she slowly become a full-time blogger and freelancer. Originally from Winnipeg, a city in the Canadian prairies, she has lived in Halifax, Toronto, Copenhagen, Yaroslavl, Edinburgh, Osaka, and London.

But like most of us, 2020 hit Holeman hard. “It’s all so complicated, isn’t it?” she recently wrote in a candid Instagram post. “To travel, or not to travel. One thing’s for sure: the way we travel may not be the same for a very long time.⁣⁣” And so, she found herself back where it all began—Canada.

For a very long time, I was too embarrassed to admit that anything was wrong. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How could there be anything wrong? I was living in London, one of the most exciting cities on the planet. I was a travel writer, on an airplane every ten days. I had a roof over my head, food in the fridge, and a loving family a phone call away. I was the very epitome of privilege.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And yet… I was so, so, so sad. I was so lonely. Most mornings, I struggled to get out of bed. I had friends in London, yes, but nobody that was so close I could confide in them with how I was really feeling.⁣ ⁣⁣ I am overwhelmed with how lucky I am to have lived in London for five years, and to have built the career that I did. I remember being thrilled to see Big Ben every single time. I remember lively nights at the local pub, long walks along the Thames, going to art galleries to see paintings by Matisse on a random Tuesday just because I could. I remember incredible restaurants, festivals, architecture, fashion. ⁣ ⁣⁣ But I also remember so much loneliness. Wanting desperately to share the city with someone I truly loved, be that a best friend or a boyfriend or a family member. Today, I understand that there was something wrong. That anxiety plagued me, making me irritable, lethargic, and sad. I was living in the greatest city on the planet, but I didn’t want it anymore. I wanted to feel like I belonged.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Living in Manitoba isn’t perfect. Since moving back to my hometown, I’ve still had bad days, especially with everything that’s been happening (see: pandemic, civil rights, general what-the-hell-is-going-on at any given moment). And even though I still have anxiety sometimes, I’m learning how to deal with it, growing and adapting and reframing as much as possible.⁣⁣ ✨ ⁣⁣ I may not see Big Ben anymore. I may need to see Matisse by looking at the print I have of his in my bedroom. I may not travel the world like I used to. But I’m happy. I’m with people I love, people I share my life with, people who make every day infinitely better. I belong.⁣ ⁣ And for that? Why… I wouldn’t give that up for all the world.⁣ ⁣ 📷 by my mama, when we spent a day picking flowers at @missmilliesflowerfarm 🌸

A post shared by Brenna Holeman (@thisbatteredsuitcase) on

“At the moment I have absolutely zero desire to travel outside of Canada, or even to another province,” says Holeman, adding that the thought of traveling to a higher-risk location or being in close quarters with tourists who haven’t quarantined makes her itch.

Her solution? Travel closer to home. “I was in talks with Travel Manitoba over a year ago that I would spend this summer traveling around this beautiful province, and that is indeed happening. While I’ve already been to Bird River as well as Winnipeg Beach, Pinawa Dam, and Birds Hill Provincial Parks in the past month, I’m soon headed to Brandon, Swan Valley, and Riding Mountain National Park for a Manitoba series with Travel Manitoba.”

According to Holeman, she will be road-tripping and spending time doing what Manitobans do best: hiking, canoeing, fishing, camping, and supporting local businesses.

You can follow her explorations—both locally and internationally—on Instagram:

Where would you go if you could go anywhere?⁣ 🌎🌍🌏⁣ ⁣⁣ I’ve always loved that question, loved the idea of wanderlust taking over, allowing your imagination to run wild. I’d go to Antarctica, or maybe sail around the South Pacific. I’d travel to Madagascar, Uzbekistan, Ghana. I’d spend a few weeks in Suriname and Guyana. I’d head to Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan with my boyfriend, our first big adventure together. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Where would you go if you could go anywhere?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The question has a different meaning to me now. Travel itself has a different meaning to me now. What used to excite and inspire now makes me feel nervous, cautious. While the world slowly opens back up, with some people venturing to other countries, provinces, or states, I’m still not comfortable travelling outside of my home province of Manitoba. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There are many reasons for this, of course: COVID-19 and cost being the two big ones. I spent over a decade working toward this career, and as a travel writer, it’s bittersweet that the thing I love to do most and the way I make my living is now out of reach to me. Even if I did want to use my savings on a big adventure instead of paying my mortgage and bills, I’d worry too much about the health risks and bringing COVID-19 back to my community (for reference, Manitoba had one (!) active case in mid-July, but cases have since skyrocketed due to travel outside the province). ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s all so complicated, isn’t it? To travel, or not to travel. One thing’s for sure: the way we travel may not be the same for a very long time. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’d still love to go to Antarctica, of course, and Madagascar, too. My list isn’t going anywhere, and I know that one day, I’ll be able to see these places. But for now, my list is much smaller. I dream of wild camping in Nopiming Provincial Park. I dream of being able to see my mum in Toronto, my brother in Vancouver. COVID-19 has devastated the travel industry, but from that, I’ve learned to appreciate what’s closer to home, what’s just around the proverbial corner. ⁣✨⁣ ⁣⁣ Where would you go if you could go anywhere? Are you travelling abroad or inter-province/state yet?

Sometimes I know a lot about a destination before I get there, sometimes I don’t know anything at all, and sometimes I think I know a bit, only to quickly realise I knew nothing at all. I’m a big believer in learning while travelling; it’s always nice to have a holiday, of course, but when it came to visiting #Mississippi, I was mostly looking forward to learning, to trying to understand even the tip of the iceberg of this state’s history. I knew of the Delta blues, of the passion and soul that came out of this stretch of Mississippi; I had grown up listening to and then studied at university the music of Muddy Waters, Son House, Robert Johnson, BB King, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, and so many others, and also fell in love with the gospel music of Sam Cooke when I was 19. I even got to see some of these great musicians play while they were alive – Bo Diddley gave me his guitar pick after a show when I was 22 – but to say I “know” the blues, as a white Canadian woman, is wildly inaccurate. It's also impossible to sum up Mississippi by its music alone, as there is so much more to this state’s history and culture than that. Spending time in such noteworthy museums as The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, The BB King Museum, the brand-new Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Museum, and The GRAMMY Museum (just to name a few) is essential when visiting Mississippi, as they showcase the incredible people that have called Mississippi home, incredible people who, through their strength, intelligence, talent, and perseverance have forever changed – and are still changing – the landscape of both the state and the country. In visiting former sharecroppers' homes, and one of the possible graves of Robert Johnson, and driving out across the great expanse of the Delta and beyond, I hope I learned just a tiny bit more about Mississippi, and about who has shaped its history. 🎶 I'm leavvvving, on a jet plane… 🎶 Today I fly "home" to LONDON! 🇬🇧 As you may have noticed, I've been spending a lot more time in Canada lately, but that doesn't mean London won't be a huge part of my life going forward; I still plan on being there for a few months of every year. After spending more than five years of my life there, it really does feel like my second home, and I can't wait to spend the next month hanging out in E2 again (my favourite neighbourhood in the city). •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Honestly, this is the life I have always dreamed of for myself: half the year in Canada, part of the year in Europe, and the rest travelling. It's taken me 15 years to accomplish, but I've never been more excited about being able to grow a business online AND travel ANDDD hang out with my family. If this sounds like bragging, it totally is, my apologies… but I'm feeling all mushy thinking about returning to London (and a few other spots in Europe, too!). •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• What's your dream living situation? Do you like being settled in one place? Would you like to be nomadic, or, like me, something in between? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• By the way, I have no idea if this photo was taken at sunset or sunrise. It was taken when I travelled to Japan in November and flew across what seemed like a million time zones, hah. I don't even know where in the world I was at this point, which I kind of love. All I knew for sure was that the sky was pink, the mountains seemed endless, and I was doing just fine. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #ichosetowander #liveauthentic #ourplanetdaily #fromtheair #fromabove #landscapelovers #neverstopexploring #mytinyatlas #passionpassport

They say there’s something in the water in Mississippi – something that has created such outstanding talent. I’d say there’s something in it that makes you want to go back, too, that makes you want to learn even more. #visitms #visitmississippi #presstrip
