During these uncertain days (weeks, months, years…), at a time when quarantine is the new normal, not only do our daily routines look different—but we ourselves look different.

Grooming and beauty might seem trivial at a time of global crisis but you don’t have to be a health expert to understand that small changes in your wardrobe and beauty routine can have a huge impact on your mood.

These fashion trends might help lift up your spirits, while also adding a playful twist to your zoom meetings. Take note!

Rainbow-Colored Buzzcuts

Getting a haircut is a great way to feel refreshed and well-groomed. After all, desperate times call for desperate measures. Now is the time to experiment with bold choices and even bolder colors.

Instagram inspiration: Janine (Cortez) Ker

Hairstylist Janine Ker has gained a massive following online thanks to her trendy buzzcuts. Her hair models and clients are seen sporting anything from leopard spots to floral patterns and tie-dye swirls, all carefully painted on their heads. Having grown up in the 80s, Ker clearly takes her inspiration from the era’s bold fashion and color schemes.

Sea Glass Nails

Jelly nails have been trending ever since the ’90s. Made by using variously tinted or translucent gel polish colors, the end result looks like a barbie dream. Recent years have seen nail artists add a more contemporary twist to the nostalgic trend.

A recent interpretation has been branded as “sea glass nails”, with the difference lying in the finish. While jelly nails are fairly shiny (and plastic-looking), sea glass nails are typically topped off with a coat of clear matte polish.

Instagram inspiration: Jessica Washick

Nail artist and sneaker designer, Jessica Washick, has an eye for color. “Colors play a huge role too because they evoke emotion,” she explained once in an interview with HYPEBAE. She also added that “a good color story can take you places.” In the case of Washick’s sea glass nails, we’re headed for ’90s territory! Buckle up!

Ruffled Masks

Like it or not, masks are here to stay. So why limit yourself when it comes to your mask? This new addition to your wardrobe can add a punchy statement to your uninspiring tracksuits.

Instagram inspiration: Tia Adeola

The young fashion designer Tia Adeola was first noticed by Teen Vogue. “She’s ready to be one of the greatest female couture designers in the world,” stated the fashion magazine a few years ago, and they weren’t wrong. Known for her trendy looks, Adeola introduced us this past year with the ruffle mask.

The reusable, washable, and adjustable masks come with velcro fastenings and are available in a range of colors, including bubble gum pink and bright orange. According to Adeola, 75% of the profits made will be donated towards the battle against COVID-19.

Multidisciplinary artist Andreea Robescu didn’t have much choice but to become an artist. Based in Barcelona, she grew up in a family of artists, experimenting with art during her early childhood. By the age of 12, she had her first group exhibition shocking the audiences with huge canvases of nudes drawn in charcoal.

But nowadays, her art is a far cry from charcoal nudes. Loud, bold, and colorful, she creates powerful visuals using everything from markers to acrylics, pencils, and ink, and sometimes even her bare hands making the whole process a very personal one. As such, her art breaks the boundaries of how the body and facial features are illustrated through the fashion industry. In other words: she likes mixing things up!

But though her work is a vibrant mish-mash of sorts, she herself is much more subdued. “My work is usually very loud, bold, and somehow different from my very chill real-life personality,” she told Adobe’s online magazine. “It probably has to do with the fact that I get bored easily and love to experiment, and I find art to be the perfect way of expressing myself.”

Her energetic illustrations attracted the eye of various global brands and publications. “I’m constantly in a different headspace and love to think three steps ahead, and usually the next project is the most exciting one,” she says. “When working with clients, I really like a good brief, but I also love to come up with new stuff and usually do a bunch of explorations using the tools and colors that I feel work best or will help that specific brand communicate better.”

You know you’re old when the fashion trends you remember from your late teens get upcycled. Suckers as we are to anything from the ’80s and ’90s, we can never say no to good nostalgic merch. Here are three artists that take clear inspiration from our favorite decades. Just take our money!

Wyatt Little

Self-taught ceramic artist Wyatt Little recreates ’90s staples, repurposing them with creative results. Age-old computers and nostalgic trainers turn into trendy plant holders under Little’s hand. “I love it when people are confused by my pieces at first glance,” he admitted in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “Then once they figure it out, I hope they are delighted.” We know you’ll be delighted.

Working Girls

Cincinnati-based artist and designer Shailah Maynard launched her brand, Working Girls, in 2015. Inspired by ’80s and ’90s music, film, and pop-culture, she sells ironic (but practical) merch that includes anything from pool floats in the shape of body parts to a resin toilet seat with flowers. “Working Girls isn’t just one type of craft or product,” she stated in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “The brand as a whole is a concept.”

Scott Young

We fell in love with Scott Young’s illustrations after coming across his zodiac signs T-shirts. With a knack for pop culture and a nod to art history, his work includes a Doritos bag painting, upon which he drew flowers. Originally from Olympia, Washington and currently living and working in New York City, he sells his merch on his online shop, where most of his stuff sells out in the blink of an eye.

Army sergeant Rob Cesternino has been away for ten months on an operation. When he finally came home, he decided to surprise his little boy in his martial arts class. Thankfully, the occasion was recorded in the most heart warming video you’ll watch today.

Luca, his son, was blindfolded and was being trained by his taekwondo instructor. After a short while, his instructor slipped away, and the father took over. The boy didn’t realize this at the time. He continued practicing until his father called his nickname. Luca quickly removed his blindfold and embraced his father warmly.

The uplifting moment between father and son went viral on social media. So much so, that it had been shared by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, himself. More than three million people have viewed the video in total.
