There are plenty of paths for success in life, and being cool isn’t usually one of them – that’s what most parents will tell you, anyway. But one girl has turned coolness into art – and became a star overnight.

Emma Chamberlain is an 18 years old YouTube star from San Bruno, California. Like most teens these days, she grew up with social media – YouTube was launched when she was just five years old, and her pass-time as a child was watching YouTubers.

So it wasn’t too surprising when at age fifteen she decided to try and make it on YouTube herself. She started posting videos daily, focusing on her day-to-day experiences and making fun of the more nonsensical aspects of her life.

Then, one day, she posted a video titled We All Owe The Dollar Store An Apology, where she ranted about the amazing (and ridiculous) finds we can only get at dollar stores. The video went viral, gaining thousands of views. In one month, she went from having 4,000 subscribers to having 150,000 – and her YouTube career finally started gaining momentum.

Today, just three years after that first video, she has a whopping 8.5 million subscribers and is being featured in media outlets across America. Recently she was even featured on the front page of Cosmopolitan! She’s still creating funny, quirky videos, and proves that sometimes, all you need to become a start is a decent sense of humor.

There’s something absolutely captivating about the 19th century – the art, the architecture, the clothes… Anyone who’s ever seen a Jane Austin TV adaptation knows the feeling of wanting to jump into the TV and join the fun. And while we can’t do exactly that, some try to live as close to the past as possible – take Bernadette Banner, for example.

Bernadette is a fashion historian, focusing mostly on 19th and 18th-century fashion. She hunts down antique sewing patterns and then tries to recreate the cloth as authentically as she can. She buys the right fabric, uses old-school scissors, and even sews by hand since home sewing machines weren’t widely available up until the past couple of decades! And her clothes aren’t meant to sit in a museum. She wears the pieces she makes, to understand exactly how navigating one’s surroundings in those layers of fabric felt like for a 19th-century woman.

And how does one go about becoming a fashion historian? For Bernadette, it was a matter of skill, gumption, and luck. She started out as an assistant costume designer on Broadway and was disappointed to learn that all those beautiful gowns are held in place with duct tapes, zippers, and wires. She wanted to learn how people really used to make clothes, so she signed up for a history of fashion program in New York.

One day she decided to upload a video of herself recreating a dress to YouTube, and that video exploded. Viewers from all over the world were fascinated by her work process and wanted to learn more about historical sewing. So she showed them. Today, Bernadette has half a million subscribers and makes her living teaching others how much value there is in the past.

Almazan Kitchen is a YouTube cooking channel that takes campfire cooking to a different dimension by pairing minimalistic, almost survivalist ways of preparing food with some of the most delicious recipes ever.

The mastermind behind it is the chef Alex Almazan, who started Almazan Kitchen with his uncle Boki with the idea of showing people what it’s like to cook amazing meals outside in nature, using only fire and coal.

Somewhere in the Serbian wilderness, Alex prepares juicy steaks, exotic seafood, and even ice cream, using organic homemade ingredients and making sure each dish has a note of Serbian traditional cuisine.

His style is refreshing and unique and he introduces his own interpretation to every recipe he showcases.

The menu includes extravagant dishes such as the enticing Reuben sandwich, which is made of smoked ham, sauerkraut, pickles, tomato cheese and creamy Curcuma sauce, all banding together to create a “full range carnival in your mouth”, and forest-made cuttlefish ink-infused pasta with spicy salmon and marinated goat cheese.

Each episode is incredibly relaxing and it will take you far into the heart of the forest, where Alex is preparing mouth-watering food in surprisingly enjoyable silence.
