]]>Andhika Muksin is an illustrator from Jakarta, Indonesia, who’s always had a soft spot for Disney. He loved watching the films as a child, so when he grew up and became an artist, he naturally starts creating his own fan art, But then he added his own twist – instead of drawing the princesses as the perfect creatures we all know and love, he altered the images to turn them a bit more realistic. Suddenly the princesses have bad selfie angles, bags under their eyes, bad hair days. It isn’t all that appealing – but it is a lot more relatable than the traditional image of the Disney princess. Andhika’s art makes the Disney princess feel a bit more grounded in reality – and a bit closer to us, regular human beings.

]]>A good example of this is Disney Princesses.
Although the common trope is that they are damsels in distress, there are plenty of Disney princesses who did their fair share of saving. Take for example Mulan, who helped save China from the Huns. Then there’s Pocahontas.
In more recent times, we’ve seen Disney princesses such as Vanellope and Elsa take on the role of protectors instead of being protected.
Outside of Disney, there’ve been many instances of women being empowered in other animated media. The X-men, for example, has long had plenty of powerful female characters, such as Storm and Psylocke.
So, it only makes sense to make a mash-up of both franchises, right?
Apparently, that seems to be the case for Marcus Williams, which is why the Atlanta-based illustrator decided to create images depicting Disney princesses with what could be their counterparts (or somewhat) in the X-men franchise.
It’s not all femme fatale, mind you, but the representation is all the same.

]]>Nguyen drew the inspiration for this project from the Disneyland park near Los Angeles. That specific Disneyland in Anaheim, California was built directly under Walt Disney himself. Also, these characters are so iconic there’s not a person in this world whose childhood wasn’t affected by them. Nguyen’s creations are a tribute to the heroes of our childhoods.
He experiments by putting them into unexpected surroundings, making Disney’s princesses look like vice-indulging hipsters. He mastered the skill of making regular things awkward, slightly unpleasant and bizarre.
Sometimes the characters are over-sexualized and sometimes he just makes them look ugly or engages them in unusual activities (for them!) such as using a smartphone or social media. The illustrations are somewhere between creepy and hilarious.
The series with Disney princesses is just one of many strange works created by Nguyen. You can find a collection of his products on Instagram.

Not content with just photoshopping Disney princesses and villains into real-life situations, Andhika Muksin decided to do things the other way around.
By bringing reality into their lives, Muksin stripped away all of the glitz and glamour of the animated Disney princesses that we all have come to love growing up. The result? A hilariously realistic reimagining of what our Disney princesses would look like if their animators took reality into account.
It’s safe to say, you’ve never seen Disney princesses like this before.
