Growing up, contemporary artist Eric Joyner was obsessed with reading comics, drawing, and painting. He graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and today he is best known for his illustrations of robots and donuts.

Back in the early 2000s, he started painting things he liked the most: San Francisco urbanscapes, paintings of old newspaper cartoon characters, Mexican masks, and Japanese tin (toy) robots. Later, he decided to focus on the tin robots, as they were the most popular. But he soon realized that there was something missing.

“By 2002, the paintings were looking good, but they still needed something to play off of… perhaps a nemesis. After a month or so of searching for a ‘nemesis’, I had an epiphany while watching the movie Pleasantville. In one of the scenes, Jeff Daniels paints a still life of…donuts,” the artist wrote on his personal website. And so, in addition to painting robots, he added donuts into his paintings and the result is quirky and fun.

Joyner’s work is well-known in the art world and some of his paintings were used in the TV show The Big Bang Theory.

Anyone with a relentless sweet tooth will tell you that donuts are not just reserved for breakfast. Whether you prefer glazed, frosted, flakey, cakey, topped or filled, you can’t go wrong when satisfying your craving with this delicious treat.

Australia-based amateur baker and “professional eater” Vickie Liu is known for creating all sorts of adorable fluffy donuts and cookies that look so real and cute that you’re not sure whether to eat them or frame them. With a background in architecture and interior design, she wanted to try something different, that would make other people happy.

Liu’s baking was primarily inspired by Toroto, Pusheen, and Rilakkumma, but after a while, her creations feature the faces of adorable animals and well-known movie and Disney characters. Others are simply made up of vibrant colors that jump right off the images, allowing us to feel like kids again.

But Liu doesn’t stop here. After she was nominated in 2017 for the title of ‘Instagrammer of the year’, she created a YouTube channel to show her beautiful creations to the world.

Carlie Pearce says that art changed her life, and now she’s changing art by adding a dose of sweetness to it.

If your day is not so great, one look at Carlie’s art will put a smile on your face. Especially if you love donuts — they are everywhere in her work. Carlie lives in Hamilton, Ontario (trivia: her art is displayed in the mayor’s office!) and thinks of art as medicine and freedom.

“I’ve wanted to be an artist since I can remember,” Carlie says. “My first commission was when I was around 15 years old—it was a drawing of a dog. When I dropped it off at the person’s house, she said, “Make sure you sign the back so I have that when you’re famous”—I’ll always remember that.”

She’s on the right road to becoming famous and you can support her by following her on Instagram. Scroll down to see her work.
