The past year has seen most of us in the kitchen and we’ve settled into routines that involved a lot more home cooking. According to one study, more than half of shoppers admitted they were eating at home more often since the pandemic began. But if we judge the numbers according to Instagram, the number of home chefs is much bigger.

One Instagram page we’ve enjoyed scrolling through for food inspo these past months has been Pinch of Yum. Run by food blogger and legend Lindsay Ostrom, it has become a Mecca for food enthusiasts and aspiring chefs alike, amassing over one million followers.

“Instagram stories have been huge for us,” admitted Ostrom in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people. If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all.”

Her down-to-earth approach to blogging seems to have struck a chord with others. But it’s Ostrom’s unapologetic enthusiasm about cooking that makes her truly stand out. According to Ostrom, she hopes she can inspire others just as well.

“I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she remarked.

Jemma Wilson is one of the biggest names in social media food circles. The woman behind “Crumbs and Doilies” has a huge social media following on her IG account and YouTube channel, and her own bustling shop in Soho. But it took her a while to get there.

In 2006, Jemma had just dropped out of art school and wasn’t sure what to do with her life. To pass the time, she started baking. She had zero experience in the kitchen up to that point, but she also had nothing to lose. slowly she honed her skills, and eventually, her attempts started leading to success – her friends and family loved her cupcakes and could have enough.

Eventually, after a short stint as a worker at a bakery, she decided to venture on her own and build her business. With a borrowed mixer and a second-hand car, she set up a stall in Brick Lane’s Sunday Upmarket and started selling her cupcakes.

A chance encounter with Jamie Oliver led to her launching her channel on his Food Tube Network, where she filmed step-by-step baking tutorials. That’s when she really exploded – young foodies on social media loved her quirky personality and creative cupcakes and she became one of the hottest names in the industry.

“Life’s too short to eat boring food,” reads Jose’s Instagram caption; and with over 1.6 million (!) followers, it’s clear that many other people agree. 

“I ate animal products for 90 percent of my life, and meat was my favorite thing in the world,” admitted Jose in an interview with Daily Mail Online. “But I was struggling with eating disorders and an unhealthy low-weight.”

“I searched for lots of diets online and then the vegan diet popped up,” he recalled. “I saw how lots of vegans ate a lot and followed a high-carb diet but still had a perfect fit body, so I started eating less animal products and decided to inform myself about veganism. That is when everything changed and I learned that veganism is a lot more than a diet, it is a lifestyle. Soon after, I made the decision to become vegan. I was no longer looking to lose more weight, but to stop supporting all forms of animal cruelty.”

Based in Lima, Peru, Jose went 100 percent vegan by the age of 14 and taught himself to cook from scratch. His Instagram page showcases mostly desserts – anything from cakes to brownies all made using entirely vegan ingredients.

Food artists come in many shapes and forms. For New Zealand-based food artist, Hazel Zakariya, inspiration comes in the form of a refreshing smoothie.

As a base, she uses breakfast smoothies made from cream, milk, fruits, and berries, while the paintings themselves are created using coconut cream, almond milk, spices, herbs, and vegetable powders. Playing with textures, patterns, and contrast, she sticks to vibrant color palettes that make the finished product all the more appetizing.

Her smoothie-paintings reinterpret real or fictional characters. Amongst them, you can find a smoothie portrait of Frida Kahlo and the dance scene from La La Land. She also loves creating animal paintings, with the result being undeniably cute.

“It all started with a happy accident,” recalled Zakariya in an interview with Vogue. “I was trying to garnish my soup with coconut cream swirls, but it didn’t turn out as planned, so I added some pesto and created a tree.”

“I love getting into creative projects in my spare time,” said the self-taught food artist, who treats her work as a hobby. “It’s a great mindfulness practice and a way of expressing myself, challenging my skills, and creating something that is unique.”

New oatmeal recipe 😊🥣🥣 Tahini cinnamon oatmeal, creamy, comfy, date sweetened and served with even more tahini on top = breakfast heaven. Ok, probably some of you are not tahini lovers, in this case you can skip this one or use your favourite drippy nut butter instead 😉 Looks like spring is coming, there's more sun and the air is different ☀ Can you feel it? But it's still cold enough to make me crave my porridge bowls for breakfast and to be honest I already had this one 2 days in a row 😋 Do you want to give it a try? . Tahini cinnamon oatmeal 1/2 cup porridge oats 4-5 small dates, chopped (use 2-3 if using big medjool dates) 3/4 cup hot water 1/2 cup oat milk 1 tbsp light tahini 1 tsp cinnamon generous pinch of sea salt In a small pan, cover your oats and chopped dates with hot water and leave for 10 minutes to soak. After that time, add all the remaining ingredients, bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes or until desired consistency. Vegan panna cotta cake 🍰 I promised you to post my panna cotta recipe. I was testing it yesterday and the idea of making panna cotta cake came to my mind… I couldn't resist! It's already almost gone now, it's such a perfect, light and delicious weekend dessert 🍰🎈 I combined pistacchio, strawberry and vanilla flavours in this cake, which tastes really amazing! I'll leave you the recipe below in case you wanna try it! . Vanilla strawberry panna cotta cake For the base 1/2 cup pistacchios, roasted and salted 1 cup almonds 2 tbsp maple syrup For the vanilla layer 1 can full fat coconut milk 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk 1 tsp agar agar 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla For the strawberry layer 1/2 cup oat milk 150g strawberries 1 tsp agar agar 2 tbsp maple syrup Place pistacchios and almonds in a food processor and proces until consistency of sand. Add maple syrup and process until it becomes sticky. Transfer the crust into a baking mold (18-21cm), lined with parchment paper, and press firmly with a spoon or bottom of a glass. Place in the freezer. In a small pan combine half cup of oat milk with 1 tsp agar agar and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let simmer for 30 seconds, then remove from the heat. In a bigger pan heat up coconut milk (don't boil). When warm, add maple syrup, lemon juice and vanilla. Slowly add agar agar mixture and stir it in. Let cool to room temperature, then pour on the cold crust and place in the fridge. Repeat the process with agar agar and oat milk. Blend the strawberries into puree and combine it with maple syrup and agar agar mixture. I haven't had breakfast tarts in something that feels like ages 🍰🍰🍰 So today was the day! I made no-bake tartlets with chocolate almond crust and 'cheesecake' millet cream. Yes, millet, I used this healthy grain because I wanted to have something different than usual cashews. And it worked perfectly! Have you ever had millet? 🍧🍧🍧 I'll leave the recipe below so you can give it a try! 🍰🍰🍰 Millet 'cheesecake' tarts (makes 4 tartlets) Crust: 1 cup almonds 1/2 cup oats 3 medjool dates 1 tbsp cacao powder 1 tbsp coconut oil Pinch of salt 2-3 tbsp cold water In a food processor, blitz almonds and oats into rough flour consistency. Add dates, cacao powder, coconut oil and salt and blend until combined. Add cold water, spoon by spoon, blending continuously, until the dough comes into a ball. Divide it in 4 parts and press into tartlet molds. Place in the freezer while preparing the cream. Millet 'cheesecake' cream: 1/2 cup millet 1 cup water 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk Juice of half lemon 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract Rinse the millet several times in warm water. Cook it in 1 cup of water until all the liquid is absorbed. Let cool to room temperature, add all the remaining ingredients and blend into a smooth cream consistency (I used hand blender). Happy Friday 🎉🎉🎉 We made it to the end of the week! Any baking plans for the upcoming weekend? I baked this healthy chocolate cake, there are veggies hidden inside, can you guess which? 😉🍫🍫 It's chocolate zucchini cake, super moist, delicious and easy treat, one of my all-time favourites. Hope I'll have some leftovers for breakfast tomorrow, cause there's nothing better than chocolate cake for breakfast, right? 😉🍰🍰 . Chocolate zucchini cake 2 cups spelt flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp pink salt 1/2 cup cacao powder 1 tbsp chia seeds + 3 tbsp water 3/4 cup raw cane sugar 1 medium zucchini, shredded 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted 1/2 cup unsweetened plant milk 1 tsp vanilla Prepare chia egg – mix chia seeds with water and set aside. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt and cacao powder. In a second bowl combine wet ingredients – coconut oil, milk, sugar, chia egg and vanilla. Add wet ingredients along with shredded zucchini to the bowl with dry ingredients and mix until combined. Transfer to a baking dish lined with parchment paper and bake in 180C for 35-40 minutes (test the cake with a toothpick). I never planned that I would pick up a yellow plate and go out looking for food,” he shares. “One fine day in 2015, my mom served me Rajma Chawal on this yellow plate. No one knows where it came from, it was just there in the kitchen. I remember taking a picture of it and sharing it on my personal Instagram profile.”

“It wasn’t a great shot but it still clicked with the viewers, getting several likes and comments from friends and family,” Sehgal explains. “This was probably because most Indian households use either steel thalis or pastel-colored crockery and a bright yellow plate was conspicuous. Intrigued, I decided to carry the yellow plate along with me while traveling. Every time I would eat on it, I would share it with people and let them know what’s on my yellow plate.”

Laphing is a noodle dish seasoned with spices. It is made from starches extracted either from potato or flour, and is cooked overnight. You can choose from dry or soup Laphing. Soupy Lhaping are cut and formed into noodles before being dipped into water and sauce made from dried chilies and vinegar and served with soya chunks on the top. A variety of spices including garlic, cloves, onions and coriander is thrown in to add to its flavor profile, along with a healthy dose of sesame oil. . Dry Lhaping is rolled with soya, salt, chilli paste, seasame oil and garlic paste and then chopped into pieces. This cold dish with amalgamation of distinct flavors takes your taste buds by storm, and is a culinary experience that you cannot miss. . The past year has seen most of us in the kitchen and we’ve settled into routines that involved a lot more home cooking. According to one study, more than half of shoppers admitted they were eating at home more often since the pandemic began. But if we judge the numbers according to Instagram, the number of home chefs is much bigger.

One Instagram page we’ve enjoyed scrolling through for food inspo these past months has been Pinch of Yum. Run by food blogger and legend Lindsay Ostrom, it has become a Mecca for food enthusiasts and aspiring chefs alike, amassing over one million followers.

“Instagram stories have been huge for us,” admitted Ostrom in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people. If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all.”

Her down-to-earth approach to blogging seems to have struck a chord with others. But it’s Ostrom’s unapologetic enthusiasm about cooking that makes her truly stand out. According to Ostrom, she hopes she can inspire others just as well.

“I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she remarked.

Jemma Wilson is one of the biggest names in social media food circles. The woman behind “Crumbs and Doilies” has a huge social media following on her IG account and YouTube channel, and her own bustling shop in Soho. But it took her a while to get there.

In 2006, Jemma had just dropped out of art school and wasn’t sure what to do with her life. To pass the time, she started baking. She had zero experience in the kitchen up to that point, but she also had nothing to lose. slowly she honed her skills, and eventually, her attempts started leading to success – her friends and family loved her cupcakes and could have enough.

Eventually, after a short stint as a worker at a bakery, she decided to venture on her own and build her business. With a borrowed mixer and a second-hand car, she set up a stall in Brick Lane’s Sunday Upmarket and started selling her cupcakes.

A chance encounter with Jamie Oliver led to her launching her channel on his Food Tube Network, where she filmed step-by-step baking tutorials. That’s when she really exploded – young foodies on social media loved her quirky personality and creative cupcakes and she became one of the hottest names in the industry.

“Life’s too short to eat boring food,” reads Jose’s Instagram caption; and with over 1.6 million (!) followers, it’s clear that many other people agree. 

“I ate animal products for 90 percent of my life, and meat was my favorite thing in the world,” admitted Jose in an interview with Daily Mail Online. “But I was struggling with eating disorders and an unhealthy low-weight.”

“I searched for lots of diets online and then the vegan diet popped up,” he recalled. “I saw how lots of vegans ate a lot and followed a high-carb diet but still had a perfect fit body, so I started eating less animal products and decided to inform myself about veganism. That is when everything changed and I learned that veganism is a lot more than a diet, it is a lifestyle. Soon after, I made the decision to become vegan. I was no longer looking to lose more weight, but to stop supporting all forms of animal cruelty.”

Based in Lima, Peru, Jose went 100 percent vegan by the age of 14 and taught himself to cook from scratch. His Instagram page showcases mostly desserts – anything from cakes to brownies all made using entirely vegan ingredients.

Food artists come in many shapes and forms. For New Zealand-based food artist, Hazel Zakariya, inspiration comes in the form of a refreshing smoothie.

As a base, she uses breakfast smoothies made from cream, milk, fruits, and berries, while the paintings themselves are created using coconut cream, almond milk, spices, herbs, and vegetable powders. Playing with textures, patterns, and contrast, she sticks to vibrant color palettes that make the finished product all the more appetizing.

Her smoothie-paintings reinterpret real or fictional characters. Amongst them, you can find a smoothie portrait of Frida Kahlo and the dance scene from La La Land. She also loves creating animal paintings, with the result being undeniably cute.

“It all started with a happy accident,” recalled Zakariya in an interview with Vogue. “I was trying to garnish my soup with coconut cream swirls, but it didn’t turn out as planned, so I added some pesto and created a tree.”

“I love getting into creative projects in my spare time,” said the self-taught food artist, who treats her work as a hobby. “It’s a great mindfulness practice and a way of expressing myself, challenging my skills, and creating something that is unique.”

But it's still cold enough to make me crave my porridge bowls for breakfast and to be honest I already had this one 2 days in a row 😋 Do you want to give it a try? . Tahini cinnamon oatmeal 1/2 cup porridge oats 4-5 small dates, chopped (use 2-3 if using big medjool dates) 3/4 cup hot water 1/2 cup oat milk 1 tbsp light tahini 1 tsp cinnamon generous pinch of sea salt In a small pan, cover your oats and chopped dates with hot water and leave for 10 minutes to soak. After that time, add all the remaining ingredients, bring to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes or until desired consistency. Vegan panna cotta cake 🍰 I promised you to post my panna cotta recipe. I was testing it yesterday and the idea of making panna cotta cake came to my mind… I couldn't resist! It's already almost gone now, it's such a perfect, light and delicious weekend dessert 🍰🎈 I combined pistacchio, strawberry and vanilla flavours in this cake, which tastes really amazing! I'll leave you the recipe below in case you wanna try it! . Vanilla strawberry panna cotta cake For the base 1/2 cup pistacchios, roasted and salted 1 cup almonds 2 tbsp maple syrup For the vanilla layer 1 can full fat coconut milk 1/2 cup unsweetened oat milk 1 tsp agar agar 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla For the strawberry layer 1/2 cup oat milk 150g strawberries 1 tsp agar agar 2 tbsp maple syrup Place pistacchios and almonds in a food processor and proces until consistency of sand. Add maple syrup and process until it becomes sticky. Transfer the crust into a baking mold (18-21cm), lined with parchment paper, and press firmly with a spoon or bottom of a glass. Place in the freezer. In a small pan combine half cup of oat milk with 1 tsp agar agar and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let simmer for 30 seconds, then remove from the heat. In a bigger pan heat up coconut milk (don't boil). When warm, add maple syrup, lemon juice and vanilla. Slowly add agar agar mixture and stir it in. Let cool to room temperature, then pour on the cold crust and place in the fridge. Repeat the process with agar agar and oat milk. Blend the strawberries into puree and combine it with maple syrup and agar agar mixture. I haven't had breakfast tarts in something that feels like ages 🍰🍰🍰 So today was the day! I made no-bake tartlets with chocolate almond crust and 'cheesecake' millet cream. Yes, millet, I used this healthy grain because I wanted to have something different than usual cashews. And it worked perfectly! Have you ever had millet? 🍧🍧🍧 I'll leave the recipe below so you can give it a try! 🍰🍰🍰 Millet 'cheesecake' tarts (makes 4 tartlets) Crust: 1 cup almonds 1/2 cup oats 3 medjool dates 1 tbsp cacao powder 1 tbsp coconut oil Pinch of salt 2-3 tbsp cold water In a food processor, blitz almonds and oats into rough flour consistency. Add dates, cacao powder, coconut oil and salt and blend until combined. Add cold water, spoon by spoon, blending continuously, until the dough comes into a ball. Divide it in 4 parts and press into tartlet molds. Place in the freezer while preparing the cream. Millet 'cheesecake' cream: 1/2 cup millet 1 cup water 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk Juice of half lemon 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract Rinse the millet several times in warm water. Cook it in 1 cup of water until all the liquid is absorbed. Let cool to room temperature, add all the remaining ingredients and blend into a smooth cream consistency (I used hand blender). Hope I'll have some leftovers for breakfast tomorrow, cause there's nothing better than chocolate cake for breakfast, right? 😉🍰🍰 . Chocolate zucchini cake 2 cups spelt flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp pink salt 1/2 cup cacao powder 1 tbsp chia seeds + 3 tbsp water 3/4 cup raw cane sugar 1 medium zucchini, shredded 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted 1/2 cup unsweetened plant milk 1 tsp vanilla Prepare chia egg – mix chia seeds with water and set aside. In a large mixing bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt and cacao powder. In a second bowl combine wet ingredients – coconut oil, milk, sugar, chia egg and vanilla. Add wet ingredients along with shredded zucchini to the bowl with dry ingredients and mix until combined. Transfer to a baking dish lined with parchment paper and bake in 180C for 35-40 minutes (test the cake with a toothpick). “It was an accident really,” she says. “I started out taking pictures of all sorts of things such as nature, my drawings and things I had lying around the house. But then I saw these hedgehog cookies on Pinterest and thought it would be fun to make my version of it. I’ve been addicted to baking ever since.”

In order to be original on social media, among millions of other people exploring the same topic, sometimes all you need is a simple idea. As simple as a yellow plate that will be the star of all your photos.

Himanshu Sehgal is an engineer from India and a guy behind the account My Yellow Plate, which now has over 40,000 followers. How did it happen?

“My Yellow Plate was not intentional. I never planned that I would pick up a yellow plate and go out looking for food,” he shares. “One fine day in 2015, my mom served me Rajma Chawal on this yellow plate. No one knows where it came from, it was just there in the kitchen. I remember taking a picture of it and sharing it on my personal Instagram profile.”

“It wasn’t a great shot but it still clicked with the viewers, getting several likes and comments from friends and family,” Sehgal explains. “This was probably because most Indian households use either steel thalis or pastel-colored crockery and a bright yellow plate was conspicuous. Intrigued, I decided to carry the yellow plate along with me while traveling. Every time I would eat on it, I would share it with people and let them know what’s on my yellow plate.”

WHEN IN MAJNU KA TILA. . Ab Dilli mein reh ke Majnu Ka Tilla nahi gaye aur Laphing nahi khaya…toh kuch nahi khaya. . What's on my yellow plate? Spicy Tibetan Laphing from a small stall in Majnu ka Tila run by Tenzen Sharma. She is selling Laphing at the same spot from last 3 years. . As you walk through the little tibet (Majnu ka Tila), you will come across many such small stalls where a lady/man will be busy making this less known yellow dish called Laphing and people sitting around relishing it. . Laphing is a noodle dish seasoned with spices. It is made from starches extracted either from potato or flour, and is cooked overnight. You can choose from dry or soup Laphing. Soupy Lhaping are cut and formed into noodles before being dipped into water and sauce made from dried chilies and vinegar and served with soya chunks on the top. A variety of spices including garlic, cloves, onions and coriander is thrown in to add to its flavor profile, along with a healthy dose of sesame oil. . Dry Lhaping is rolled with soya, salt, chilli paste, seasame oil and garlic paste and then chopped into pieces. This cold dish with amalgamation of distinct flavors takes your taste buds by storm, and is a culinary experience that you cannot miss. . It also makes a delicious social food in the tibetan community since it is easier to devour over gossiping and merry making with good company. On your next visit to Majnu Ka Tila, make sure you do not miss on this less known tibetan street food. .
