Known as the ultimate millennial food maven, celebrity cook Alison Roman will inspire you to roll up your sleeves and get cooking. Originally from Los Angeles, and currently based in Brooklyn, Roman is the author of the cookbooks Dining In and Nothing Fancy, and is also a bi-weekly columnist for The New York Times. In other words: she’s kind of a big deal.

But if you ask Roman, she’s just a person writing recipes that people like. “I’m not trying to corner a market,” she relayed in an interview with the New Consumer. “I’m not trying to appeal to millennials, which by the way, could be a 40-year-old at this point.”

“There’s other people in my industry that would never get that label that,” she reflected, “quite frankly, have never achieved the level of popularity, and I’m wondering why. It’s just interesting to me.” Her rise to popularity is in part thanks to her viral recipes (look up #TheStew and #TheCookies), and in part due to her unapologetic approach to cooking (look up that beef with Chrissy Teigen).

She also has a newsletter you’d actually want to sign up for, with recent recipes including sticky apple cake and chicken salad. But according to Roman, her success came about fairly intuitively, with no real business model to follow. “I have no strategy,” she admitted. “That’s something you should know about me. I’m like an animal. [Laughs.] I operate on instinct — yes or no. I say no a lot. And I say yes to not as much, especially these days.”

Follow her on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes footage from her kitchen.

When you scroll through your Instagram feed you’re most likely to see photos of perfect people, wearing glamorous clothes in beautiful places. Most of these photos are far from reality and Amsterdam-based influencer and vlogger Rianne Meijer decided to use her popularity to show us the reality behind her perfect Instagram shots.

From time to time, Rianne uploads an “Instagram vs reality” photo that compares her perfect Instagram shots with real, unflattering photos. These side-by-side photos are hilarious, but also very important because Rianne wants to tell her followers that’s she’s not perfect and looks exactly like the rest of us in real life.

“First of all, the not-so-pretty pictures made me laugh so hard and I hoped it would make others laugh as well,” Rianne told Bored Panda. “And second, it could give a really nice and honest message to my followers. It kind of felt like only posting the perfect Instagram pictures was basically lying, so for me to post the other ones next to it made it more real. That’s why I posted the Instagram vs. reality pictures. And it turned out to be a good call. I love that now I stand for something online.”

With so many ways to waste time on phones, parents of teenagers have to come up with new ways to ground their kids for not using their time to do other, more important things. 15-year-old Madelynn Sumpter’s dad gave her a choice — she either forfeits her phone for a month or he reduces the sentence to two weeks and he takes over her social media. The girl chose the latter and the adventure began.

Madelynn’s dad took over her Instagram and he started posting photos. After a while, the news outlets started reporting about this family and they started gaining followers. Madelynn’s account now has over 17k followers, all thanks to her dad.

Scroll down to see some of the photos he posted while being in charge of the account. Madelynn’s detention is now over and she got her phone back, though we believe she uses it much more responsibly now.

Please Hate These Things had a simple idea, but the execution is very powerful. The proof is that they already have over 200,000 followers and the number just keeps growing. We are amazed by the level of creativity shown by some people featured on this page. Most of the time, we can clearly see that they wanted to do something nice but went overboard with it.

Notes on growth: Yesterday we had friends over for a visit. One of whom I’ve known since high school. We were laughing and reminiscing. My HS friend said: “Alex used to be SO MEAN in high school.” While the tone of our conversation was joking, he wasn’t lying. I replied: “Thank God for growth & finding joy.” . . The conversation made me think long and hard about who I used to be. Being mean was my defense mechanism—or so I thought…but really it was an excuse not be vulnerable. It protected me from the people who were awful & mean to me. It was a barrier that, at the time, felt safer than showing up. But in reality, I was crying out for help from sadness, trauma, rejection, and hopelessness. I did not yet have the tools in my emotional toolbox to help me along. So I hid behind anger. . . I was a miserable kid and teenager. And as a 30 year old woman, I often think about my younger self and the pain she walked through. I am constantly re-parenting myself and learning how to wrap love around the young girl I once hated. . . I’m sharing this to say: Change is real. Growth is real. Healing is possible. My past was practice and it was hard as hell to get to where I am today—standing in joy, in love, and in courage. I was exactly who I needed to be back then because there was a lesson in the mess. . . I had to learn how to be kind to myself before I could be kind to others. My heart sometimes still breaks for young Alex, but she taught me a lot. Like how to be a resilient person, a loving mother, and ultimately, a nice human. . . Community: how have you changed over the years? how are you loving your younger self these days?

Ilana Griffo has many talents to her name. The illustrator, letterer, and author describes herself as a person with a crush on handmade type, playful patterns, and helping others pursue their creative passion. The help she offers is simple but poignant: posting encouraging messages on her Instagram page written in bold typography.

“You are strong and brave,” reads one post; “Make the time,” reads another. And with more than 10 thousand followers, it’s clear that people are listening to her carefully chosen words.

“I came from a line of strong creative women, and that was a huge influence,” Griffo shared with Freelance Wisdom. “When I took my first design class, I was hooked! While I was in school, I took on any side project I could to get experience, and eventually, those side projects became more demanding than my full-time job.”

Working as a designer and illustrator in Upstate New York, Griffo also teaches online courses and workshops. She’s also written the book Mind Your Business which teaches entrepreneurs how to turn their creative passions into money-makers.

Make room for her messages on your Instagram feed. You won’t regret it.

“BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME!!!!“⠀ ⠀ Have you been telling yourself that you can't do XYZ (start a business, meal prep, grow your family, go to the gym, sign up for a pottery class, etc etc) because you just "don't have the time"? Well bear with me, because I’m about to drop some (long) knowledge.⠀ ⠀ If it’s important to you, you will make the time. Life is demanding – between jobs, kids, family, GOT *I don’t watch it but I heard it’s great*, socializing, and just taking care of yourself – how do all these people find the time for their side projects or passions?! Here’s a few tips:⠀ ⠀ Make a list of all the things you can stop wasting your time on like:⠀ 1. Scrolling⠀ 2. Comparing⠀ 3. Worrying/overanalyzing⠀ 4. Making excuses⠀ Have you ever actually tracked your screen time? I guarantee you’re spending at least an hour on your phone, what if you used that hour to pursue one of those goals/passion projects/resolutions/ideas? ⠀ ⠀ 1. Instead of taking your lunch break to socialize, what if you used it one day a week to work on your passion? Start small!⠀ 2. Try waking up 20 minutes earlier. ⠀ 3. Find an accountability buddy who you can check in with and who can cheer you on. ⠀ 4. Block a time on your calendar – just like a meeting. It’s non-negotiable, and your attention is needed. ⠀ ⠀ Let me know if these tips work for you, and how you’re working towards your goals!⠀

Inspiration comes in many shapes and forms. For author and wellness consultant Alexandra Elle it takes the shape of a Post-it note. Living in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and children, she shares uplifting mottos and daily reminders through notes that she then posts on Instagram.

Her poignant writing clearly resonates with others, with her Instagram page amassing more than 500 thousand followers. Now, Elle also passes her knowledge through workshops and retreats that are centered around assisting others in finding their voices through storytelling, poetry, and narrative writing.

“The highlight of my career has been building a community near and far, in-person and online,” she shared with Create & Cultivate. “It blows my mind how writing, storying telling, and standing in comradery can shift the dynamics of sisterhood and self-love in such a positive way, time and time again.”

But even with that many followers, she admits it’s still hard for her to open up. “I still feel vulnerable when I share my writing. It’s my heart’s work. I think vulnerability is good, so I lean into it. People relate to authenticity and I truly believe that being vulnerable helps amplify that.”

It may not shock you that incredible things can be done with just a pencil and some paper, but the breathtakingly lifelike drawings of Sheila R Giovanni are bound to leave you amazed.

The Brazilian-based artist spends more than 100 hours on each project, and her attention to detail is strikingly evident. Thanks to carefully placed shading, ultrathin lines and a remarkably steady hand, Sheila’s designs look as if they’re going to jump right off the page. They’re so immaculate, in fact, that her Instagram audience is calling her an ‘art genius’ and ‘insane’ over the amount of dedication she puts into hers penciled portraits.

What makes her different from the other hyperrealist artists is that she predominantly works with pencil, while others tend to use an airbrush. With her drawings, she tends to create an emotional, social and cultural impact and her style differs from photorealism which is far more technical. She takes everyday objects and scenes, mostly including famous people and then recreates unreal drawings, which also reveal some insights into how she achieves that realistic look.

“My inspiration comes from the phrase ‘to intensify the normal,” she said.

These mind-blowingly realistic images are hand drawn illustrations. Seriously.

Seriously.
