Ilana Griffo Will Teach You How to Turn Your Creative Passion Into a Full-Time Job

Ilana Griffo has many talents to her name. The illustrator, letterer, and author describes herself as a person with a crush on handmade type, playful patterns, and helping others pursue their creative passion. The help she offers is simple but poignant: posting encouraging messages on her Instagram page written in bold typography.

“You are strong and brave,” reads one post; “Make the time,” reads another. And with more than 10 thousand followers, it’s clear that people are listening to her carefully chosen words.

“I came from a line of strong creative women, and that was a huge influence,” Griffo shared with Freelance Wisdom. “When I took my first design class, I was hooked! While I was in school, I took on any side project I could to get experience, and eventually, those side projects became more demanding than my full-time job.”

Working as a designer and illustrator in Upstate New York, Griffo also teaches online courses and workshops. She’s also written the book Mind Your Business which teaches entrepreneurs how to turn their creative passions into money-makers.

Make room for her messages on your Instagram feed. You won’t regret it.

“BUT I DON'T HAVE THE TIME!!!!“⠀ ⠀ Have you been telling yourself that you can't do XYZ (start a business, meal prep, grow your family, go to the gym, sign up for a pottery class, etc etc) because you just "don't have the time"? Well bear with me, because I’m about to drop some (long) knowledge.⠀ ⠀ If it’s important to you, you will make the time. Life is demanding – between jobs, kids, family, GOT *I don’t watch it but I heard it’s great*, socializing, and just taking care of yourself – how do all these people find the time for their side projects or passions?! Here’s a few tips:⠀ ⠀ Make a list of all the things you can stop wasting your time on like:⠀ 1. Scrolling⠀ 2. Comparing⠀ 3. Worrying/overanalyzing⠀ 4. Making excuses⠀ Have you ever actually tracked your screen time? I guarantee you’re spending at least an hour on your phone, what if you used that hour to pursue one of those goals/passion projects/resolutions/ideas? ⠀ ⠀ 1. Instead of taking your lunch break to socialize, what if you used it one day a week to work on your passion? Start small!⠀ 2. Try waking up 20 minutes earlier. ⠀ 3. Find an accountability buddy who you can check in with and who can cheer you on. ⠀ 4. Block a time on your calendar – just like a meeting. It’s non-negotiable, and your attention is needed. ⠀ ⠀ Let me know if these tips work for you, and how you’re working towards your goals!⠀
