The post Chris Gilmour Makes Realistic Sculptures Out of Cardboard appeared first on PlayJunkie.
]]>According to Gilmour, the idea of working with cardboard and recycled materials is tied to his work with educational projects. “Cardboard is cheap and easy to find, and using simple tools and techniques it is possible to make almost anything,” he explains on his website. “I love the challenge of working with other people to help them realize their ideas.”
The finished works create a remarkable effect where the viewer tries to reconcile the solid physical presence of well-known objects with a material that most people think of as light, weak, and only meant to be used as a container and then thrown away. But his work can also be seen as a reflection on consumerism and materialism, and as a metaphor for transience and impermanence.
“One of the reasons I am attracted by cardboard is that, although it can be an expensive material, people fail to notice it and just throw it away when buying an object, often slightly irritated at the thought of having to dispose of it,” writes Gilmour. “There is a widespread idea of having to leave our mark, of expressing our personality by buying this or that object that will best convey our originality. Almost as if the consumer society had transformed even our personalities into something you can buy.”

]]>“I love the idea of using unremarkable found objects and turning them into one-off sculptures,” the artist shared on her personal website. “I’m inspired by my surroundings, but mostly I’m inspired by the materials I find. I hope my work makes you smile!”
“The great thing about driftwood is that each piece is very different,” she added in an interview with Studio Wallop. “I tend to let the materials lead me, rather than having an idea in my head and trying to find a piece to fit my idea… I let the materials do the work really.”
Lighthouses, beach houses, boats, and sharks are just some of the sculptures Elson creates. The gifted artist also has a degree in illustration and printmaking. If you are interested in her work, hop onto her Instagram account for more!

I currently have publicly displayed sculptures located in the Milwaukee Buck’s Fiserv Forum Arena, The Cleveland Cavaliers Arena, USC, University of Notre Dame, Wisconsin University and many more.”
He has also created commissioned sculptures for Goodyear Tires, Lululemon Athletica, and Nothing But Tires. In one of his projects, he shows us how a spoon can be transformed into a palm tree necklace, or how a coffee can can become a hand saw.

]]>Since 2011, Bordalo II has been working to make recycled materials into sculptures, often incorporating mechanical elements and instead of heading to the art supply store he just collects common trash and turns it into amazing works of art. His materials come from city dumps, such as the working parts of toys and clocks, damaged bumpers, burned tires and scrap iron.
Big Trash Animals is his compilation of large-scale sculptures who depict animals made out of recycled materials. Through portraying them, Bordalo II draws attention to the problem of waste and pollution made from the materials that are responsible for the destruction on the planet.
“My idea is to depict nature itself, in this case, animals, out of materials that are responsible for its destruction.”

]]>One of them, if not the oldest, is recycling, and while many people are fiercely dedicated to traditional recycling, others are fond of reusing these materials for various creative and surprisingly useful purposes.
Located in Bloomington, Minnesota, The Mall of America is one of the greenest malls in the nation that recycles more than 60% of its waste. They have thousands of plants and trees inside, as well as water-efficient toilets, and recycle more than 2400 tons of food waste annually.
Another great example is Matter of Trust, which along with the ecological charity Clean Wave has a rather unusual but effective way to help our planet. They collect hair and fur donations to create oil-absorbent mats that are used to clean up oil spills.
ReTuna Återbruksgalleria is a shopping center in Sweden where you can buy recycled, upcycled or eco-friendly, sustainable merchandise. You can leave something that you no longer use or want at a recycling depot, and then it will get repaired or re-sold.

]]>This crafty mom of three, Sarah Tyau, is a great example of how you – and your kids – can be fashionable without spending a fortune and polluting the planet. Instead of going to the ‘fast fashion’ stores, she recycles old clothes and shops at second-hand stores.
Her daughters love the process and will probably do what their mom is doing. “I have been meaning to teach them how to sew, we are supposed to start a sewing series on YouTube together where I teach them how to refashion, but they’re also so busy in their own lives, we haven’t gotten a chance to yet,” Sarah says. “But they have a strong sense of fashion in their young age and have very good taste so I think they’ll take over what I do one day and be better than me!”
