Karadagis is not only skilled in inking – he’s interested in other art forms as well, such as creating handmade ancient Greek musical instruments, sculptures, and watercolor or pencil drawings.

Nevertheless, he realized that human skin was his favorite material to work with. “While making art, I realized that a person’s body is the most valuable material and that I want to make people happy when they look at my work on their bodies… I don’t think there’s anything more gratifying than carrying the fairytale design that one imagines in his body all his life,” the artist wrote for Bored Panda.

Karadagis says that his art is “his everything” and it’s mostly inspired by nature, animals and all those childhood memories that his clients hold dear.

“I’m passionate about nature and animals because I believe that the more dependent we are on nature, the more free we are as individuals.”

Makkala Rose is a New Zealand-based tattoo artist who specializes in tattoos inspired by flora and fauna. Rose creates highly detailed and colorful tattoos that contain flowers, fruit, animals, and other botanical and natural elements.

Rose’s skills were especially showcased in one of her recent tattoo works when she covered the client’s entire back with an elaborate tattoo that contained all the elements of her recognizable style. The outcome was truly stunning as the tattoo ended up resembling the work of a classical painter.

Rose’s painting-like tattoos aren’t a surprise when you know her first passion was painting.

“The feel and the mood brought through by my color palette and my style of tattooing is influenced by the way I like to paint and now vice versa as I spend a lot more time tattooing, they lend interestingly to each other,” she explained in a recent interview with Colossal.

Jenna Bouma (aka Slower Black) is a master in hand-poke tattooing. Using the shamisen-bori method – meaning she doesn’t use a machine – she sticks to a black and grey palette, with her style blending together the traditional and the modern.

Honing her craft by practicing first on her friends, she started out by working out of a private loft space in her friends’ apartment. “I was doing it on the down-low, and I was on edge because it wasn’t an official shop,” she told The Great Discontent. It wasn’t until 2012 that she opened her own shop.

“The biggest challenge was that I was unable to get an apprenticeship because there wasn’t anyone who could teach me this form of tattooing,” she says. “Because of that, I literally just tried out a bunch of different methods until it felt right, and then I tweaked it as I went.”

Nowadays, her process is relatively straight forward. “When clients come in, I already have a good idea of what they want, because at that point we’ll have already emailed or talked about it over the phone,” she says. “Then I draw up the design and get the A-OK from the client before making a stencil. Once the stencil is made, I put it onto the person’s skin, and we decide on a placement that they like. Then we make it happen. The setup is clean and sterile, and everything is the same setup as it is with a machine, except for the tools I’m using.”

A palm-sized tattoo usually takes between 1-2 hours, a hand sized one takes 3 hours but back pieces can vary from 22- 40 hours depending on the size, detail, and coverage. Take a look at some of her work in the gallery below:

As they evolved, so has the interest in them grown, and some tattoos are considered to be nothing short of works of art. These next tattoo artists are living proof that your tattoo need not be a total cliche.

Roxx

Tattoo artist, known simply as Roxx, puts the art in “tattoo art.” Using the human body as her canvas, her work is bold, geometric, and very much striking. So much so that it was featured in a 2017 exhibition in The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). “Tattoo to me is the enhancement and adornment of what nature has already given us,” stated the LA-based artist in an interview with Dazed & Confused.

Daisy Watson

Inspired by Picasso, Cocteau, and Jean Arp, Daisy Watson uses thin black lines to create surrealist tattoos with a playful twist. “My drawings are never too serious or boring,” said the Berlin-based tattoo artist in an interview with femtastics. “At least I hope so. I would call my style surrealistic.”

Tati Compton

California-born tattoo artist Tati Compton (real name Tatiana Kartomten) has made a name for herself thanks to her “stick-n-poke” technique. “I started doing tattoos on an impetus – for an experience or out of boredom or from a feeling and it didn’t really matter how it looked or turned out,” she admitted in an interview with Tattoo Life. “It was more about the act and experience. It was free – I didn’t have to ask anyone for anything – It was DIY, it was immediate, and it was fun. I don’t know how to use a machine, this is the only way I know how to tattoo.” The end result is undeniably cool.

California-born tattoo artist Tati Compton (real name Tatiana Kartomten) is known for her “stick-n-poke” technique. After experimenting with “home-made” stick and poke art in her early twenties, she later developed her craft into a professional career.

After spending a few years hand-poking at Sang Bleu London, Tati moved to Los Angeles where she continues to pioneer in making stick and poke tattoos a respected art form, whilst inspiring a new generation of tattooers.

Admitting she actually wanted to be a fashion designer when she was younger, she told Tattoo Life that she was obsessed with tattoo aesthetic from a young age. “I always wanted them and would put temporary tattoos all over when I was in elementary school,” she recalled.

“I was about 6 years old when I first remember seeing a tattoo,” she went on to say. “I went with my dad to a photo shoot because he worked on catalogs. He said we were gonna hang with Dolly Parton so I was really excited because she was my favorite, but instead a tall thin woman with long black hair came down the stairs. It turned out to be Cher. We became friends and she showed me her rad tattoos and we played cards.”

Funnily enough, the first time Tati got a tattoo was also the first time she got a tattoo. “It was with my friend Moses at his house and we were listening to Metallica, we gave each other matching dots on our fingers and wrist.”

“I started doing tattoos on an impetus – for an experience or out of boredom or from a feeling and it didn’t really matter how it looked or turned out,” she admitted. “It was more about the act and experience. It was free – I didn’t have to ask anyone for anything – It was DIY, it was immediate, and it was fun. I don’t know how to use a machine, this is the only way I know how to tattoo.”

Now her Instagram page has more than 250k followers. Her tattoos are also presented in her debut book featuring 192 pages of over 800 of her most intricate illustrations, from whimsical psychedelia to powerful silhouettes of women.

Have you been thinking about getting inked, but just can’t find that unique style to truly make your tattoo stand out in the crowd? Get inspired by this tattoo artist’s creative technique!

Brazilian tattoo artist Eduardo Lozano, owner of the São Paulo-based Tattoo You studio, has made a name for himself in recent years for perfecting a style now known as “embroidery tattoos.” Yes, the colorful, embroidered patch, a symbol of vintage counterculture and coolness that has had an on-again, off-again relationship with both street and high fashion for decades is making an unexpected comeback in the form of eternal skin modifications!

Lozano says he loves doing these tats, which create a fantastic impression of a patch that has been embroidered directly on the customer’s skin, and dedicates himself to doing the best, most lifelike work possible. Judging from his increasingly popular Instagram account, his customers are more than happy with their artwork.

Many of the tattoos are of popular cartoon and movie characters, which lend themselves greatly to this style, but there are also other, more original ideas popping up among the requests. As the tattoo artist explains, he is only “at the beginning” with this approach and his best ideas are yet to come.

Check out this gallery of adorable tattoos and find out if his unusual designs are your cup of tea.

Inspired by Picasso’s inked portraits, Cocteau’s line drawings, and Jean Arp’s use of organic shapes, she creates surrealist illustrations that are minimalist in nature, drawn with thin black lines.

“I like to paint vases or hands,” said Watson in an interview in German with femtastics. “Basically, I try to combine different, mostly contradictory things in one picture. That result is always exciting. But faces are my absolute favorite motif.”

“I wear many tattoos myself,” she went on to say. “Mostly on my legs, because that’s when I started practicing before tattooing other people. I do not wear tattoos on my arms or other obvious spots, as you can see. So I’m not the classic tattoo artist cliché. My grandmother knows nothing about my tattoos.”

Her tattoo art is shared on her popular Instagram page, which has amassed more than 200k followers. Quite an achievement in and of itself. Take a look.

Milan-based tattoo artist Mattia Mambo creates unique graphic interpretations of his clients’ favorite animals, fruits, and celebrities. He uses thick lines to create the designs and layers them for the best effect.

Mambo attended art school but he learned how to do tattoos on his own. His unstructured style has developed by accident.

“What inspired me most has probably been my passion for graphic designs and logos—I love simple shapes. Every day I’m encouraged by the objective of simplifying each image as much as possible and making it clear and intuitive using only a few black lines. But both black lines and colors are fundamental: the colors tell what the black lines can’t do,” he shared with This is Colossal.

For some time now, freckle tattoos have been all the rage, adding a sun-kissed edge to our otherwise tired faces. But now, Michigan-based cosmetic tattoo artist, Jessica Knapik, took the trend a step further.

At first, her dotted tattoos look like regular freckles, but upon closer inspection, a hidden star sign is revealed. Tagging it aptly as
“AstroFrecks”, Knapik uses cosmetic tattooing to apply natural looking freckles in the shape of your astrology sign’s constellation.

“It’s a cute, personal, secret way to connect your sign and the universe to your body,” she told Dazed & Confused Magazine. “I’m super into metaphysical things; astrology, crystals, setting your intentions, and I’ve been getting more into tarot. Really all of it relies on moon phases, seasons, planet position, and kind of thanking the universe for the things you already have, while also asking for things you may need in your life. So around the end of 2017, late one-night AstroFrecks popped into my head,” she recalled.

“All my clients are so diverse,” she added. “All ages. Every kind of person you can think of, from many other states too. A lot of people love the astrology aspect, but I also get a lot of girls who want freckles because their moms or grandmas have them and they find them so beautiful but they naturally just never got them. I’ve heard back from my clients that their moms and grandmas look at their faces and say, ‘Oh my gosh they look just like mine!’ And that is the highest compliment I can think of.”

To tattoo artists, the human body is a canvas. And Los Angeles-based tattoo artist, known as Roxx, takes this notion to the extreme, turning her clients into living and breathing works of art.

Roxx creates minimalist geometric tattoos, drawn with black ink only. Sprawling across chests, arms, and legs, her creations are truly mesmerizing.

To create her tattoos, Roxx looks to the structure of leaves and shells for inspiration. Specifically, “The repeating patterns and the geometry, the stuff that’s always fascinated mystics and philosophers and shamans,” she explained in an interview with GQ.

And once a client arrives, Roxx forgoes the pre-planned stencil placement. “When you’re drawing things straight onto the body, they have another magical quality to them that is often lost,” she said.

Berlin-based tattoo artist Daisy Watson was an illustrator long before she picked up a tattoo machine.
