Discovering a broken plate in your dishwasher is not uncommon. The fragility of their material makes them prone to cracks and shattering, at which point they become unusable for their original purpose. However, for German multidisciplinary artist Helena Hafemann, this occurrence serves as an opportunity to add a new piece to her Threadbare series.

The Threadbare series sees Hafemann joining fragments of broken plates with threads to create captivating artworks. Stretched threads that bring the fragments together perfectly match their colors, resulting in an intriguing effect that allows the viewer to observe the piece from two different standpoints. One is that the fragments are slowly becoming whole again, and the other one is that the delicate threads are the only thing that prevents them from parting ways forever.

On her website, Hafemann explains that her work deals with “the visualization and transformations of social values and explores the dignity of the materials.” Besides the Threadbare series, Hafemann is engaged in the creation of site-specific installations, street art interventions, and various other projects. Her works have been exhibited in her native Germany and several other European countries.

Nigerian artist Joshua Adokuru never meant to enter the art world seriously. After enrolling at the National Open University of Nigeria, he chose computer science as his primary focus and believed art would forever remain just a hobby for him. However, art had other ideas.

While looking to find a creative outlet, Adokuru became interested in hyper-realism drawings back in 2017. He realized he was quite good at it, and the word soon got out about his exceptional artworks. Soon, he was asked to do his first commission work, which made him realize that art could become a career for him after all.

Since then, Adokuru experimented with various mediums but string art was the thing that attracted him the most. He became proficient in creating impressive and unique string portraits that quickly became a hit in the art world.

In a recent chat with Colossal, Adokuru revealed that most of his portraits are inspired by his family and friends. He starts the process by making a sketch on a piece of wood and then starts building facial features using threads of wool. His works are unique not only because of the material he uses but also his choice of colors. He always uses blue strings for the skin, believing it gives his portraits “a feeling of peace, a feeling of serenity.”

Nowadays, his works tour the world and have been exhibited in several major cities in the world, including New York. Check out more of them below.

We are lucky to be living in a time in which we can enjoy all sorts of technological and other advancements that improve the quality of life. However, this modern life also comes with its own set of challenges that individuals and society can find hard to navigate. UK artist John Holcroft captures this struggle through a series of intriguing illustrations.

Through these illustrations, Holcroft provides powerful commentaries on various aspects of modern life. He covers a wide range of relatable subjects, including social media, politics, the environment, current events, personal relationships, and much more.

Most of Holcroft’s works paint the world in a negative light, but according to the artist, that is our reality.

“The world we live in cannot be summed up in one illustration. I suppose I mainly focus on the negative aspects because that’s where we will find an injustice. If I was to sum up the world we live in, it would have to be something negative,” Holcroft shared in an interview with ReArt.

Each of Holcroft’s illustrations will make you think deeply either about your own life or the world we are currently living in. One thing is for sure, they don’t leave anyone indifferent. Check out more of them below.

Growing up, contemporary artist Eric Joyner was obsessed with reading comics, drawing, and painting. He graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and today he is best known for his illustrations of robots and donuts.

Back in the early 2000s, he started painting things he liked the most: San Francisco urbanscapes, paintings of old newspaper cartoon characters, Mexican masks, and Japanese tin (toy) robots. Later, he decided to focus on the tin robots, as they were the most popular. But he soon realized that there was something missing.

“By 2002, the paintings were looking good, but they still needed something to play off of… perhaps a nemesis. After a month or so of searching for a ‘nemesis’, I had an epiphany while watching the movie Pleasantville. In one of the scenes, Jeff Daniels paints a still life of…donuts,” the artist wrote on his personal website. And so, in addition to painting robots, he added donuts into his paintings and the result is quirky and fun.

Joyner’s work is well-known in the art world and some of his paintings were used in the TV show The Big Bang Theory.

Lucy Joyce is a British artist specializing in life-like wildlife and pet artworks. Her works pack an impressive amount of detail, capturing animals in such a realistic way that you often have a feeling you are looking at a photograph.

Joyce uses pencil, pastel, and paint during her creative process, which allows her to replicate the features of her subjects in all of their beauty.

Arguably, the true testament to her artistic talent is her Midnight series. Here, Joyce paints on a black background, which helps her to highlight the features of every animal with the monochromatic color palette. This results in captivating paintings that resemble fine art photography in every way possible.

“Bringing together a fascination with the animal kingdom and a natural leaning towards realistic art, I enjoy exploring a diverse range of subjects, and my detailed work aims to celebrate every inch of their individual characteristics and natural beauty, bringing them to life on canvas,” Joyce explains in an artist statement posted on her website.

Joyce’s artwork is quite popular on social media, especially on Instagram, where she has more than 170K followers. Her paintings also captured the attention of some big brands, and she recently created a piece for one Lamborghini dealership in the UK.

British artist Adam Rush’s approach to ceramics isn’t something you see every day. He creates pieces that are somewhat weird, but curiously captivating, thanks to the fact that each seems like it has its own personality.

Rush’s ceramic creations, ranging from jugs to teapots and mugs, are known for their imperfect shapes and being adorned with representations of a human face. Each piece comes with slightly different facial features and expressions, some smiling, others frowning, and some having a surprise look. This touch makes them uniquely stand out among the crowd.

For some of the pieces, Rush teamed up with his twin brother Stuart, who is also an artist. The two frequently collaborate together, having similar motivations and ideas they want to present with their work, only in a different medium.

“We touch upon their reality of anxiety, depression, and temporality with an occasional touch of humor,” the Rush brothers describe their works. “In result showing expressive and touching artworks which develops an instant connection with the viewer.”

Rush frequently updates his social media with new collections and ceramic pieces. You can check out more of them by continuing to scroll.

As we return to a new normal, relearning common courtesies such as wearing pants and greeting our co-workers might take a while! As such, we might as well freshen our nails while we’re at it! Most recently we’ve been inspired by Betina Goldstein’s nail art. Colorful, minimalist, and timeless, her manicures are gratifying while still being work-appropriate.

And yet, Goldstein is always up for a challenge, when it comes to her designs. “I love designs that challenge me and really require a lot of tiny details and a lot of patience,” she shared in an interview with Elle. The end result fits nicely inside the category of wearable art.

This also might explain why Goldstein has caught not only the attention of Instagram it-girls but of A-list celebrities like Bella Hadid, Zoë Kravitz, and Billie Eilish—all of which have sported her designs.

“I focus on designs that are more contemporary and they have intricate detail and dimension, but don’t necessarily overwhelm your nails,” says Goldstein. “It’s all about the placement of the nail art. It’s really minimal. At the same time, some of my nail designs are really out there: I’ll do chains on the nails—but with a sheer base.”

And while most of her designs are minimal, Goldstein sometimes explores more dramatic options (introducing elements like rhinestones and liquid gold). In order to achieve her more out-there designs, she sometimes takes to the local craft store.

“I’m always going into craft stores and finding like random things around my house to put on my nails,” she relayed. “One time I had this Chanel ribbon, and it was too beautiful to throw away so I just cut out each letter and then place them on my nails. I don’t know what the inspiration, I just see that object and I’m like, oh I could do something with this. That’s it!”

Take a look at some of her designs in the gallery below!

Hawkins’ super fun comics are a gift that keeps on giving. They always pack some surprises at the end, bringing lots of laughs but also leaving you a bit puzzled.

Hawkins has been interested in comics as a creative outlet for a while but only started being more focused on these projects in 2018 when he started Inky Rickshaw Comics. Over time, the number of followers on his social media started to grow and encouraged him to invest more time into them.

Now, Inky Rickshaw Comics has 35K followers on Instagram alone, with the number only growing as these comics keep on finding ways to reach new fans with their entertaining nature.

“I’m still an aspiring artist myself, but I’ll say that one of the most important things is to keep creating and striving to improve as those are lifelong pursuits,” Hawkins gave advice to artists who are looking to get into webcomics in a recent chat with Bored Panda. “Make the art that interests you, and you will eventually find an audience. It also helps to nurture a positive attitude and a good sense of humor!”

We love unique comics, and Cube Melt webcomic from artist and illustrator Peng Ven Wong definitely falls into this category. It focuses on an adorable ice cube and follows it on all sorts of funny and relatable adventures.

Most of the Cube Melt webcomics take inspiration from everyday life but have unexpected and amusing twists thanks to the unique features of its main character.

For example, in one of the comics, the ice cube decides to go on a ride. When it notices that there is a free entry for “kids below 90 cm,” it simply shrinks to the required size and gets a free ride.

Another comic shows the ice cube getting bored of watching the TV. It decides to go outside but quickly realizes the sun isn’t its best friend.

“Every day is a source of inspiration for me. A simple stroll in the park, an overheard conversation, or a trending meme can all spark an idea,” Wong shared in a recent chat with Bored Panda.

Thanks to their unique main character and funny stories, Cube Melt webcomic gained a sizable online fanbase that includes more than 250K followers on Instagram. Check out some of our favorite entries below.

It is often easy to figure out how a webcomic will end just by looking at its first panel. However, with Inky Rickshaw Comics, created by artist Ricky Hawkins, you never know what to expect.

Check out more of his works below.
