The post Fabian Oefner Captures Vibrant Brushstrokes in Resin in His Latest Series of Sculptures appeared first on PlayJunkie.
]]>Oefner recently presented a new series of artworks called Volumen in which he set out to explore the boundaries of painting. Each piece is presented in the form of a resin cubicle that captures vibrant brushstrokes.
According to Oefner, he was trying to embrace the physicality of paint and transform its two-dimensional nature by lifting it into a 3D realm. His aim was to get viewers to reconsider the paint’s form and medium.
“I have always been fascinated by the textural quality of paintings. For me, experiencing works like de Kooning’s Door to the River or Pollock’s Lavender Mist has always been as much a tactile experience as a visual one. These paintings are almost like sculptures to me. What I am doing is removing the canvas entirely and lifting the paint into space, making its physicality completely tangible,” Oefner explained in an artist statement shared on his website.

]]>In his work, Lu manages to bend metal to his will, turning a rigid material into a motion form. He manages to capture the flow of water in an awe-inspiring way, even adding small droplets that indicate the viewer just missed the big splash or is about to witness a new one.
In order to create his sculptures and achieve their amazing effect, Lu uses two distinct methods. The first method sees the artist using a traditional cast method.
For the second method, Lu uses a laser to cut thousands of Chinese characters into pieces of stainless steel before welding them together by hand. He then works the metal until creating the desired shape before sanding down and polishing the welded joints.
“I have been deeply interested in Chinese calligraphy and transcribing poetry since young, and wished to merge this interest with sculpture making,” Lu explained in an interview ahead of his exhibition at Sundaram Tagore Gallery.

]]>In Otama-shimai’s art, hamsters are shown in playful scenes that are a joy to look at. They are sharing laughs with birds, nibbling on corn, joining forces to pick wild berries, and much more.
Besides featuring such a cute subject, Otama-shimai’s works are also notable for resembling Nihonga paintings. This style of painting was popularized in Japan during the Meiji era in the late 19th century and is characterized by the use of mineral and other organic pigments on silk or traditional Japanese paper known as washi.
At the beginning of her career as an artist, Otama-shimai created Nihonga paintings following traditional methods. However, after experiencing a creative block at one point, she decided to give them a modern twist. She began making Nihonga paintings digitally and incorporating modern objects into their narratives.
Despite the modern approach, Otama-shimai still manages to capture the essence of Nihonga paintings with fragile-looking backgrounds, simple color tones, and characteristic outlines. To check out more of her works, continue scrolling down.

]]>The Artful Possum is the alter ego of the British embroidery artist Emily, who’s come a long way since kicking off her embroidery journey in 2021. She’s completely self-taught, and one of her favorite things about embroidery is that anyone can get into it and learn the basics at their own pace.
Emily had a pretty clear vision for her embroidery creations from the get-go, and the name of her brand perfectly captures what her art is all about. Opossums are her most common subjects, but we’ve seen many other animals grace her adorable hoops, including foxes, rabbits, mice, and otters.
Since Emily’s hoops take countless hours to finish, her embroidery is not for sale, but her fans can buy stickers, hoodies, shirts, tote bags, and other products inspired by her art. She’s also using her platform to inspire other people to get into embroidery by selling patterns and tutorials inspired by her most iconic designs on her Etsy page.

]]>Kaminski is known for making Papier-mâché artworks that take inspiration from the objects around us. These might be things we use every day, like toothbrushes and toothpaste, or things we encounter frequently, like clothes, food, and drinks.
Regardless of the subject Kaminski chooses, he manages to make it incredibly detailed and realistic. Unless they pick it up, the viewer has a hard time recognizing the difference.
“Most of the things are somehow related to a subject I’m interested in, but sometimes I’m just curious to see how something will turn out. And I work within my limited abilities. I’m not so great at drawing or painting, and that rules out a lot,” Kaminski shared in a recent chat with The Family Reviews.
Kaminski’s Papier-mâché art received acclaim from the art world and was exhibited in galleries across the United States. To see more of it, visit the artist’s social media profiles or continue scrolling below.

]]>The post Long-Lost Masterpiece by Joaquín Sorolla Resurfaces After 134 Years appeared first on PlayJunkie.
]]>Sorolla has been an influential painter, renowned for his portraits, landscapes, and paintings showing themes from society and history. Between 1889 and 1890, Sorola visited Paris, France, and the visit inspired him to create “Paris Boulevard.”
The piece shows an outdoor seating area of a busy café and people walking down the street while featuring a self-portrait of Sorolla as a man sitting at a table with a soldier and enjoying a cigar. It was an unusual addition to the artist’s opus, being considered a departure from his signature bright and vivid works.
Sorolla exhibited the finished painting at Spanish National Exhibition in 1890 and sold it to a private collector shortly after. It was the last time painting was seen and art experts ended up concluding that the artwork was lost. However, recent investigation showed that the family which originally bought the painting actually kept it in its possession and they ended up lending it to Royal Collections gallery for the exhibit.
“The panoramic composition of the work—which is very photographic and which doesn’t worry about the figures which are cut off at each end—really grabs your attention and gives it a freshness that’s a taste of what Sorolla would go on to do more emphatically,” curator Blanca Pons-Sorolla, who is also Sorolla’s great-granddaughter, said of the piece. “The drawing is very accurate, the brush strokes restrained, and the details have a real virtuosity that defines the more careful and defined painting of his early works.”
