Zheng Lu is a Chinese artist who draws inspiration from nature to create astonishing art. He is best known for metal sculptures that look like splashes of water frozen in time.
In his work, Lu manages to bend metal to his will, turning a rigid material into a motion form. He manages to capture the flow of water in an awe-inspiring way, even adding small droplets that indicate the viewer just missed the big splash or is about to witness a new one.
In order to create his sculptures and achieve their amazing effect, Lu uses two distinct methods. The first method sees the artist using a traditional cast method.
For the second method, Lu uses a laser to cut thousands of Chinese characters into pieces of stainless steel before welding them together by hand. He then works the metal until creating the desired shape before sanding down and polishing the welded joints.
“I have been deeply interested in Chinese calligraphy and transcribing poetry since young, and wished to merge this interest with sculpture making,” Lu explained in an interview ahead of his exhibition at Sundaram Tagore Gallery.
