]]>Under the name Beach4Art, this family of four has been gaining attention for their detailed depictions of animals, landscapes, Christmas motifs, and intricate patterns made out of rocks, stained glass, branches, and other materials washed on the shore. Unfortunately, their works are short-lived, being consumed by the sea during tides, but the family always snaps a few photos to keep them alive in another form.
This exciting project started when one of the Slare children, 13-year-old Emanuel, got a school task to make a mandala. The entire family, which also consists of his mother Leva, his father Dzintars, and younger sister Elizabete, decided to join in and help him. They had such a great time that they made it a recurring family activity, which soon turned into a full artistic endeavor.
“We find the creativity involved in the art project very therapeutic,” shared Leva in a recent interview. “It’s a way of communicating with others and being part of the community. We would like to encourage other families to try it too.”
Now the family holds exhibitions of their works (in their photo form) while also selling prints on Etsy. They also regularly update their Instagram page with new works. Check out more of them below.

]]>Herd has been creating large-scale land art, or earthworks as he likes to call it, for the past 40 years. He uses a number of natural materials like soil, grass, and wood, to shape massive patches of land into impressive artwork that look like they could have easily been painted with a huge brush.
Over the years, Herd had the opportunity to work all across the United States and in several countries worldwide including Australia, Brazil, China and Cuba. He also collaborated with a number of major companies, allowing the use of his work for marketing purposes but also aiming to send a message to the world.
Activism is a huge part of Herd’s creative process and he looks to use his works to” bring attention to a multitude of issues showcasing the environment, science, sustainable agriculture and the humanities which all connect on a common theme regarding the “human condition” in the world today. “

]]>Salvo had the opportunity to make art his life calling when he was in high school, being offered a fine arts scholarship from a “prominent East Coast University”. But he decided to take a different path back then, choosing to focus on his skills for business and the engineering sciences. He started working at NASA and went on to have a successful entrepreneurial career. But despite this, he never left art completely.
While building his career, Salvo was doing art on the side and realized there was a strong interest in his works after collectors started inquiring about ways to acquire his pieces. This prompted him to dedicate more time to sculpting and painting.
While Salvo expresses his creative vision in various media, previously mentioned metal butterflies escaping frames and canvases are among his most recognizable works. According to the artist, these 3D sculptures “capture the subtleties and interplay of light and shadow to create and amplify the tension between simplicity and complexity.”

]]>Exploring some of the most remote and hostile landscapes in the world, Townsend’s artwork presents a view of the world beyond the familiar, showcasing apparently desolate places that are almost entirely uninhabited.
Each painting is the result of an expedition or a residency. “The work draws on journeys I have made to specific destinations around the world,” Townsend explained in an interview with Jackson’s Art. “They are places where the land is stark and exposed, unfertile, remote, and even hostile,” she adds.
Her work is gradual, producing first small works on-site using a collapsible easel, sketchbooks, and photographs, and then building up to larger canvases in her London studio. “I travel with a basic lightweight kit (oils or acrylics depending on practicality) and a small easel, pencils, charcoals, and a camera,” says Townsend. “Sometimes these small works succeed in their own right and sometimes they become the backbone of studio work.”
While her work strikes a chord with us, it’s also very much detached, creating a sense of foreignness and unexplored territories. See for yourself:

]]>After dedicating the past years to traveling full time, they decided to settle down in Magnetic Island on the Great Barrier Reef in North Queensland, Australia, sharing their island adventures online.
The idea to travel, explains Evie, came after some reflection. “I’ve always thought that in 10 years, my daughter Emmie wouldn’t thank me for installing a brand new kitchen and bathroom in our home, but she would thank me for filling her early years with amazing experiences, learnings, and sights and sounds from around the world,” she wrote on her website.
“I’ve realized that working until I retire and then finally doing what makes me happy is not what I want my life to be about,” she adds. “I don’t want to work all through Emmie’s childhood. I want to enjoy our time together now and learn, explore, and adventure together.”
Her life-changing choice didn’t go unnoticed, with some 110,000 followers on Instagram alone.
We wish the two well on their journeys. In the meantime … here are some enviable highlights from their dedicated Instagram page!

]]>“Our poser blooms allow you a stress-free completion date, with no unexpected surprises on your wedding day morning, since these pretties can be made well ahead of event time and easily stored in boxes,” she explains on her website. According to Kinney, her bouquets can easily be packed in suitcases, since many destination locations do not have a wide variety of selection to choose from on floral needs.
Her fake flowers are also lighter in weight and don’t easily stain fabrics in comparison to fresh flowers, with the added bonus that they are also allergy-friendly since they are unscented and pollen-free. “Some other reasons we are supporters of these fakers are the fact that they are more durable compared to fresh flowers, allowing your petals to stay pretty and perky in all climates and locations,” she notes.
Kinney’s original idea to start a faux flower business actually originated from her own wedding. “When I was planning my own wedding, I met with numerous fresh florists, but quickly learned my floral-vision was quite expensive,” she recalled. “My mom suggested that we explore faux blooms as an alternative so that I wouldn’t have to compromise my dream look. I’ll admit I was very hesitant to this idea. But I am so glad she did make that suggestion, because I instantly fell in love with the possibilities of the incredible selection out there!”
According to Kinney, family and friends at her wedding had zero idea poser-blooms were surrounding them when she said her vows. And so, after her wedding, she decided to start a website and design for other people’s weddings on a hobby-scale. This little faux floral business surprisingly blossomed pretty quickly. Judging by her Incredible variety, we can see why!

]]>With a background in textile and industrial design, Choedamphai enjoys experimenting with different materials, colors, and textures, combining different techniques such as watercolor, paper folding, and collage. “I’ve been making things since I was a child because my mom was always encouraging us,” she relayed in an interview with the Etsy blog. “Even if she was just baking, she might give us a little bit of dough so we could make our own version of bread. Now, I can’t not be making things, so of course, I have lots of supplies in my studio, and after a while, I started selling them along with my own designs.”
According to Choedamphai, it all started in April 2012, when she made a dinosaur pop-up card for her 3-year-old nephew who absolutely loved it. She went on to launch her business in July 2012, while still living in Oxford, UK, working from her bedroom and garden shed. Having moved back to her home town in Thailand, she decided to expand this business and added a range of carefully selected craft supplies and handmade hair accessories.
“I’ve always been drawn to textures and love running my hands over them,” says Choedamphai. “Generally, I won’t use a material if I don’t like how it feels, and I’m very picky.” According to Choedamphai, the handmade paper in Thailand, made from mulberry tree bark, has a rich texture to it – the sort of perfect imperfections she’s drawn to when choosing her materials.

]]>Nowadays, with little over 50k followers on Instagram and clients that include Anthropologie, Hallmark, and the Land of Nod, her work is featured on a huge variety of products: from women’s and children’s wear to paper products, home furnishings, and giftware.
When it comes to her creative process, Johnson admits she relies on a heavy dose of intuition and spontaneity. “I like to explore a lot, try new materials, play with layers and texture, then let the outcome determine the finished piece,” she relayed. “I also like spontaneity. I’m not much of a planner.”
She adds that she never draws an outline or sketch beforehand – a remarkable statement if you take into account the amount of work she’s produced. “If something is going pear-shaped I like to push through and make it work and I think that by doing that I get interesting and unexpected results,” she notes. “But I’m also very organized and logical. I enjoy creating groups of related pieces – collections. Cohesiveness, harmonious color, a common thread that links all my work – these are all important to me.”
With creativity clearly running through her veins, Johnson says she doesn’t deal with artist block. “There are always too many ideas and not enough time,” she says. You’d want to follow her on Instagram.
