The post Austin Howlett is a Master at Surreal Art appeared first on PlayJunkie.
]]>Surreal is definitely one word to accurately describe Howlett’s paintings, but his oil canvases let loose a handful of other qualities; one of them being sheer talent. It’s not hard to see that the artist is incredibly skilled, which serves as a solid foundation for the radical creative adventures he takes.
Whether it’s a young woman who seems to be “fused” with the branches of a tree, or giant humans roaming around grandiose natural landscapes, Howlett cleverly designs his pieces in such a way that everything seems organic.
His art, while surreal, still has a quaint softness to it. It doesn’t ever feel off-putting or harsh, a goal that many other radical painters tend to strive for. Rather, Howlett strikes a perfect balance between imagination and foundation, and it’s not hard to see why his work is so popular.

]]>For Viktorija, decorating her wall was her way of “writing a diary”. The project started on 25th March 2020 and lasted for almost four months.
“After 113 days, the flat’s new tattoo was completed,” the artist shared in a statement for Bored Panda. “I’m not sure how long it will stay for, although I suspect that decision will belong to any future owners of the flat, who may enjoy ‘reading’ it first before the magnolia brush comes out!”
Black and blue acrylic paint was the medium she used to draw her masterpiece. Every evening she made daily “updates” to the wall, depicting her experiences during the UK’s lockdown, “be they new, sad, unexpected, or even just mundane”.
You can see the process of creating her masterpiece in the gallery below. You can also check out her Instagram account and Etsy store, where she sells the miniature pots she makes.

]]>“Africa was love at first sight,” the artist tells My Modern Met. “I have learned so much about its cultures, but most of all I have felt that there was something so important in this land.” He was particularly in awe of the houses made of bricks and many other materials that show creativity and celebrate life.
Two of the portraits from his series belong to award-winning writer Amanda Gorman, and Jamaican American reggae artist Keznamdi. Gorman’s portrait was named after Maya Angelou’s poem And Still I Rise and it’s a powerful and confident work. Wonderful vibrant colors make this series one of the most beautiful things Tsevis ever did.

]]>Whatever her chosen medium, her subjects tend to be the same, centering around our often-overlooked neighbors. Insects, rodents, and other small creatures inhabit her work, creating a universe of their own with its own histories and mythologies. Combining her own memories with the stories of these tiny overlooked creatures, Imazu tries to make sense of the world we live in and imagine the worlds we cannot see with our own eyes.
“Images of animals have always given me pleasure and excitement, and I have always loved drawing animals,” she told OtherPeoplesPixels. “In fact, I don’t remember any time when I wasn’t drawing animals, even as doodles in textbooks at school or on letters.”
Her etchings, artist books, and cut-paper installations are equally populated with real animals and legendary creatures from Japanese folklore, adding a layer of fantasy to her otherwise realistic renderings. “I like mixing real and mythical animals together because I love imagining what it was like to live in the world before all animals were named and categorized,” she notes. “There was a time when rhinos were as fantastical as unicorns.”
“I draw ideas and inspirations from memories and stories,” she adds. “Similarly, I encourage viewers to bring their own memories and associations to my work. They can decide if it’s personal or political.” We encourage you to do just that:
