As we return to a new normal, relearning common courtesies such as wearing pants and greeting our co-workers might take a while! As such, we might as well freshen our nails while we’re at it! Most recently we’ve been inspired by Betina Goldstein’s nail art. Colorful, minimalist, and timeless, her manicures are gratifying while still being work-appropriate.

And yet, Goldstein is always up for a challenge, when it comes to her designs. “I love designs that challenge me and really require a lot of tiny details and a lot of patience,” she shared in an interview with Elle. The end result fits nicely inside the category of wearable art.

This also might explain why Goldstein has caught not only the attention of Instagram it-girls but of A-list celebrities like Bella Hadid, Zoë Kravitz, and Billie Eilish—all of which have sported her designs.

“I focus on designs that are more contemporary and they have intricate detail and dimension, but don’t necessarily overwhelm your nails,” says Goldstein. “It’s all about the placement of the nail art. It’s really minimal. At the same time, some of my nail designs are really out there: I’ll do chains on the nails—but with a sheer base.”

And while most of her designs are minimal, Goldstein sometimes explores more dramatic options (introducing elements like rhinestones and liquid gold). In order to achieve her more out-there designs, she sometimes takes to the local craft store.

“I’m always going into craft stores and finding like random things around my house to put on my nails,” she relayed. “One time I had this Chanel ribbon, and it was too beautiful to throw away so I just cut out each letter and then place them on my nails. I don’t know what the inspiration, I just see that object and I’m like, oh I could do something with this. That’s it!”

Take a look at some of her designs in the gallery below!

Nail technicians on Instagram tend to take the term “nail art” quite literally, but even among nail artists, Gracie J’s work stands out, providing us with the perfect manicure inspiration for summer… If we’re feeling bold enough, that is.

We’re ready to step up our fashion game with the latest nail art trends. While a fresh, minimal manicure is always welcome, this summer is all about bold designs, neon colors, and eye-popping patterns.

“I derive inspiration from other places, from all kinds of artists, like jewelry designers,” said J in an interview with Coveteur. “But sometimes I just have an idea that pops in my head.” Such ideas include modern art-inspired nails, sculpted nails that incorporate jewelry, and even letter-shaped nails.

According to J, her passion is linked to her childhood, and more specifically her mother: “My mom is a very flashy person; she always had her nails done,” she noted. “If we’re going to a simple BBQ, she’ll wear a gypsy skirt and shirt with chains—she’s the flashy Haitian mom.”

Growing up in Haiti also meant attending a school that maintained a strict regime when it comes to your nails: “I also went to school in Haiti for a little while when I was younger, and they would line you up and check your hygiene, including your nails,” says J. “They would send you home if it wasn’t up to par.”

Currently based in New York City, J is the former Lead Nail Stylist for TNT’s critically-acclaimed television series CLAWS. And with over 90,000 followers on Instagram, she isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. If you’re looking to upgrade your fashion style, start here!

This past year has taken its toll, challenging not only the ways we work but in how we live and even think. It has also dramatically changed the way we dress. After a quiet year in the fashion world, we’re looking for a change of pace this summer. Bold patterns, neon colors, and dramatic silhouettes are making an appearance, with fashion designers celebrating our slow return to normalcy.

One brand we’ve got our eyes on is Staud. With some 480k followers on Instagram, the LA-based brand is a new favorite for it-girls worldwide. Launched in 2015 by Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto, the brand sports a rich, colorful collection of summer dresses and trendy handbags.

“We think our bags are unique and fun but at the same time have a really timeless essence to them,” brand owner Sarah Staudinger told Harper’s BAZAAR. “I think our customers see their style versatility and are excited about creating outfits with them.”

Indeed, the brand’s mission is to create clothes and accessories that are both trendy and accessible. Acknowledging that how we get dressed can have a huge impact on how we feel, the brand aims to empower women through the use of well-made pieces that are meant to flatter the female form. Sustainability is also crucial, as designers now further examine the purpose of fashion.

“We wanted to create collections that were not overly trend-driven that had a timeless quality and remain affordable,” says Staudinger. Some recent favorites of ours include the Giorgiana Dress, the Mini Enzo in Fresh White and their effortless rib knits.

During these uncertain days (weeks, months, years…), at a time when quarantine is the new normal, not only do our daily routines look different—but we ourselves look different.

Grooming and beauty might seem trivial at a time of global crisis but you don’t have to be a health expert to understand that small changes in your wardrobe and beauty routine can have a huge impact on your mood.

These fashion trends might help lift up your spirits, while also adding a playful twist to your zoom meetings. Take note!

Rainbow-Colored Buzzcuts

Getting a haircut is a great way to feel refreshed and well-groomed. After all, desperate times call for desperate measures. Now is the time to experiment with bold choices and even bolder colors.

Instagram inspiration: Janine (Cortez) Ker

Hairstylist Janine Ker has gained a massive following online thanks to her trendy buzzcuts. Her hair models and clients are seen sporting anything from leopard spots to floral patterns and tie-dye swirls, all carefully painted on their heads. Having grown up in the 80s, Ker clearly takes her inspiration from the era’s bold fashion and color schemes.

Sea Glass Nails

Jelly nails have been trending ever since the ’90s. Made by using variously tinted or translucent gel polish colors, the end result looks like a barbie dream. Recent years have seen nail artists add a more contemporary twist to the nostalgic trend.

A recent interpretation has been branded as “sea glass nails”, with the difference lying in the finish. While jelly nails are fairly shiny (and plastic-looking), sea glass nails are typically topped off with a coat of clear matte polish.

Instagram inspiration: Jessica Washick

Nail artist and sneaker designer, Jessica Washick, has an eye for color. “Colors play a huge role too because they evoke emotion,” she explained once in an interview with HYPEBAE. She also added that “a good color story can take you places.” In the case of Washick’s sea glass nails, we’re headed for ’90s territory! Buckle up!

Ruffled Masks

Like it or not, masks are here to stay. So why limit yourself when it comes to your mask? This new addition to your wardrobe can add a punchy statement to your uninspiring tracksuits.

Instagram inspiration: Tia Adeola

The young fashion designer Tia Adeola was first noticed by Teen Vogue. “She’s ready to be one of the greatest female couture designers in the world,” stated the fashion magazine a few years ago, and they weren’t wrong. Known for her trendy looks, Adeola introduced us this past year with the ruffle mask.

The reusable, washable, and adjustable masks come with velcro fastenings and are available in a range of colors, including bubble gum pink and bright orange. According to Adeola, 75% of the profits made will be donated towards the battle against COVID-19.

“Creating is in my blood,” says Philippines-based embroidery artist Ruby Thursday More. “My maternal grandmother used to make quilts and sell it to farmers during the harvest season,” she explains in her short bio. “She also embroiders blankets, tablecloth, and tea towels. When I was in gradeschool, my mom used to sew pencil cases and throwpillow cases and sell it as a way of augmenting our family’s income. I used to sit under her sewing machine, cutting away the excess threads from the things she has made.”

And so, a love for sewing and embroidery began – one that would eventually culminate in an Etsy shop where she now sells hand-embroidered necklaces and earrings, all made with special care and attention. “I used to work as a freelance photojournalist, but when I got pregnant, my husband and I decided that I’d stay at home for a while and take care of our daughter,” she explained in an interview with the Etsy blog, describing how her career came to be. “About a year after she was born, I started to feel like I wanted to do something creative again. I started making an inventory of my skills and what I’d like to do, and I decided I’d really enjoy working with fabric and drawing and colors. I had a few threads, so I tried embroidering, and it’s cliché, but it was love at first sight.”

When it comes to Thursday More’s creative inspiration, color plays a huge part. she admits she goes color hunting on the internet, saving references on her computer for a later time. Aside from color, her designs are also influenced by her mood, imagination, and memories, making her creations both personal and appealing.

“I try to stitch every day, even just for an hour,” she says. “I like the portability, the fact that I can take it with me wherever I go. It doesn’t require electricity. It doesn’t require the internet. With hand embroidery, you’re just in the moment.” Here are some of our favorite creations by her:

Self-taught jewelry maker, Jamie Carlson, creates recycled leather jewelry featuring vivid color combinations and striking geometric shapes. The mastermind behind SCANDINAZN, she promotes creative self-expression and sustainability through her ethically-made jewelry. Originally from Kelowna and now based in Vancouver, Canada, her brand’s name is a portmanteau – coined from a combination of the words “Scandinavian” and “Asian”.

Describing her aesthetic as “fun, quirky, bold, and pattern-driven”, Carlson designs her products in multiple color options—the brighter the better! “I want my pieces to be eye-catching,” she explained in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I’m also part Scandinavian and part Japanese, so a lot of my design influence comes from those two cultures. The name of my shop is a mashup of my heritage.”

While the shapes and pops of color are borrowed from Scandinavian design, the subtle handmade intricacies of her designs echo Japanese art. All of Carlson’s pieces are crafted by her, by hand, in her studio. “My background is in apparel design, but I started experimenting with jewelry during a project at school where I worked with repurposed materials,” she explains. “I discovered that by cutting leather, I could make some really nice fringe, and from there I moved on to making earrings. My jewelry-making process is self-taught, but it’s guided by what I was taught about design and construction.”

Sustainability plays a big role in Carlson’s philosophy. Using recycled garments and scraps as the main component of her products she hopes to minimize our carbon footprint as much as possible. ” There’s so much textile waste in the world, so I want to make the most of materials that are already out there,” she says. “When people hear that my pieces are made from repurposed leather, they want to know more about the process and it changes people’s perception of what sustainable fashion can look like.”

Established in 2015, Elysian Theory (named after jewelry designer Elyse Tolles) is a small-batch jewelry brand that blurs the line between sophisticated minimalism and soft femininity. Every piece is slow-made by Tolles in her Midtown Sacramento studio, with the core value of intentional craftsmanship is at the forefront.

“Elysian means beautiful, blissful, and ethereal, and also happens to be one possible origin story for my name, Elyse,” writes Tolles on her website, explaining her brand’s name. “In classical mythology, the Elysian Fields were a dreamed about place of ultimate beauty and happiness, and my personal favorite definition of the word is Ancient Greek one that means “to be deeply stirred from joy.”

“All I’ve ever really wanted is to spend my life making and being surrounded by beautiful things,” she notes, adding that this venture has given her the opportunity to be a part of the transformative effect that can happen when a person looks and feels their best.

Made using polymer clay, each of her pieces is individually designed, pigmented, sculpted, and detailed by hand from start to finish – the antithesis to mass-produced, fast fashion items. It also means that no two pieces exactly alike.

“I’m constantly inspired by the nothing-short-of-magical feeling you get from wearing a gorgeous pair of statement earrings, and it’s my greatest honor to be able to pass that along to you,” says Tolles. Other sources of inspiration are contemporary feminine, all things dreamy and ethereal, and the juxtaposition of modern and old-world.

Prepare to fall in love with a pair of earrings:

Handbag brand, Boejack Design, was founded in 2011 by Eda Atay Pastirmaci, who decided to turn her passion for sewing and creating into her full-time job – an untraditional choice if you take into account her background in engineering.

Born in Istanbul, Atay Pastirmaci had earned a BA in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Kingston University, UK and had worked more than five years in technology and consulting, before taking a leap of faith into sewing.

Now based in Seattle, Atay Pastirmaci specializes in bags that combine art and fashion. “Before Boejack Design, I had a very boring engineering career,” she shared with the Etsy blog. “I was in need of a hobby; I wanted to create something from scratch. I found this old sewing machine of my grandmother’s, and I taught myself to use it.”

The first bags she made were for herself and her friends, with no intention of selling them. But attending a motivational workshop in 2011 she decided to try and see if her creations had any buyers. Nowadays, her bags sell by the hundreds.

All bags are hand-sewn in limited numbers in her home studio, as she emphasizes on small batch production and sources her materials locally. “It’s about continuous improvement,” says Atay Pastirmaci, describing her design process. “It always starts with the question of how something is going to be used. First I decide what it’s going to be, say, a makeup bag or backpack. After I come up with a prototype, I use it (and ask my friends to use it) for a couple of weeks. Then I ask their opinions about the particular style: Do I need to add a zipper to the opening? Change the size? Add another pocket?”

Her designs blend a playful use of color and shapes with a minimalist yet functional style. You’d want to grab one yourself.

Olga Prinku is known for her flower embroidery — a unique technique of embroidering which relies on dried flowers instead of thread, which are arranged on tulle. A designer, maker, and creator, Prinku’s background is actually in graphic design, but she’s always been a fan of arts and crafts.

According to her bio, her journey started with learning how to crochet and knit. Gradually, and after being exposed to botanical art, she started experimenting with dried flowers. She then came to develop a floral embroidery technique using real organic material as her thread – a skill she now passes onto others through classes and tutorials

“A lot of my ideas come from going for walks in the countryside near where I live, or things I grow in the garden,” she told The Italian Rêve. The garden is also where Prinku finds a lot of her materials. “I love working with the seasons,” she notes, “so whatever is in season is my favorite at that moment! Some flowers are better than others for particular purposes. For example, for floral embroidery hoops you want flowers with thin stalks and without particularly big heads. I’ve recently discovered you can dry small poppies and they seem to work well. Whereas for wreaths I like to use things like eucalyptus and olive, and I’ve started trying hydrangeas and peonies.”

While some flowers she dries herself, others she buys dried. She also forages for seed pods at the end of the season and picks them when they are dry already. “In terms of colors, it’s mostly pastel shades although currently I’m working on a red, white and blue floral hoop and enjoying how these bright colors work together!” she says.
