Illustrator Andres Moncayo recently shared a project he did for a client in which he created a series of alternative covers for popular books. Judging by the reactions of social media to Moncayo’s works, the project was a resounding success.

While designing the covers, Moncayo’s aim was to keep them minimalistic while also trying to sum up the story of the book into a single visual. This made it a challenging task but one that Moncayo solved with flying grades.

For example, his design for Stephen King’s The Shining shows a silhouette of a man holding an axe, inside of which is a kid sitting in a hallway and looking at a half-open door of a hotel room. If you read the book, you realize that Moncayo managed to sum up all the key points of the book.

“I find book cover design incredibly challenging and rewarding,” Moncayo explained in a recent chat with My Modern Met. “The ability to condense the essence of an entire story into a single visual is a fascinating exercise in creative problem-solving. It’s a perfect blend of art and communication.”

Moncayo also created covers for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Marry Shelley’s Frankenstein, and many more. Check out more of them below.

Ploypisut Chueobchoey, known simply as Ploy, integrates Thai and Chinese cultures into her art, creating illustrations and patterns that are steeped in flora and fauna. Based in Bangkok, Thailand, Ploy was born and raised in a Thai-Chinese family.

“I began drawing when I was very young,” she shared with Lake. “During my childhood, I was surrounded by Chinese and Thai decorations. My grandpa used a Chinese ceramic bowl and teapot, and my grandma wore a Thai motif textile cloth. I thought I absorbed a lot from my childhood environment. My parents always encouraged me to continue my creative path.”

“I am into traditional Chinese painting,” she adds. Inspired by wall paintings in Chinese temples, as well as Thai textiles, Ploy says she enjoys the complexity of natural shapes and animals in folk tales. “I am so thrilled to see illustrations and patterns come to life,” she says.

Using mainly watercolor, but also gouache and ink, Ploy’s selected clients include Samsung, Design House Greetings x Trader Joe’s, and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. “Social media is a huge part of my career as a freelance illustrator and designer,” she says. “Clients have found me through social media, especially Instagram. I use them to share my work and connect with other people. I can’t imagine living without it.”

Karlotta Freier is a talented illustrator whose works you might have seen in magazines and publications like Greenpeace Magazine, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. She is known for her unique approach to illustrations that combines cartoon-like style with dreamlike scenarios.

Freier creates vivid and colorful artwork that offers the viewer a lot to unpack. Subtle details and discrepancies between what is expected and what is presented lead to surreal scenes that fill out the canvas. The flowers are bigger than humans, flying carpets carry white horses, and large fishes use cities as their aquariums.

When working on new pieces, Freier isn’t necessarily striving for technical perfection. Instead, she relies on the combination of colors and lines to create an atmosphere that will feed emotions to the viewer.

“The emotional world is narrative enough for me, so I often just concentrate on that. Hope, sadness, longing, anger, solitude, fear, surprise, annoyance… it’s fun to inhabit drawings with figures who just feel stuff,” she explained in a recent interview with It’s Nice That.

Freier has an MFA Illustration degree and has worked as an illustration professor at the China Academy of Art. Her works have been exhibited around the world and featured on posters, book covers, newspaper front pages, and more. She is currently also working on her first comic book.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t get enough of makeup art. There is something about the ability of makeup artists to completely transform themselves or others that makes us always want more. This is how we discovered the works of Lithuanian makeup artist Toma.

This 26-year-old artist enjoys doing makeup for others and helping people feel prettier, but her true passion is using her own body as a canvas and creating stunning illustrations using makeup tools.

“I have loved art ever since I can remember. My creativity rocketed when I realized that my greatest canvas was my own body,” she explained in a recent post on Bored Panda.

According to Toma, she initially obtained a graphic design degree but wanted to give makeup artistry a chance. It wasn’t long before she discovered all the possibilities that makeup offers, and this prompted her to start making illusions and experimenting with visual effects.

Toma’s creations are super-impressive, coming with close attention to details and being very convincing. This is especially the case with some of her scarier works, which look like they came straight out of a horror movie.

“Makeup is my passion and definitely one of the best ways to express myself and show my creativity to other people,” she concludes.

There’s an undeniable softness to Mateja Kovač’s illustrations and paintings. Colored in light, pastel colors, her art tends to center around women, but there’s also an abundance of floral patterns—a feeling of springtime and romanticism and a sense of ease that’s come to be characteristic of her work.

“I believe that the ambiance in my work is much more important than the content,” she remarked in an interview with Viva’s. “I could even say that my choice of motives and color is made considering the ambiance I’m trying to achieve in my illustration.”

Having graduated with a master’s degree from the School of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Kovač’s style has developed over time and with much trial and error. In 2014, she began collaborating with international clients, and over the years her projects have ranged from social media marketing campaigns to packaging and stationery.

“The projects I work on are varied and they all demand a different emotion,” she reflected. “You could say that I tend to surround myself with sources of inspiration that awakens a necessary emotion in me, depending on the project I’m working on.” She explains that while working on a fashion editorial, her inspiration might come from the old masters of fashion illustration; if she’s working on an illustration of a city, on the other hand, then she might turn to old photos or vintage postcards for inspiration.

When illustrating women, she finds that the challenge is greater. “On the internet, I often find very caricatured and grotesque illustrations of the female figure whose sexuality is shown in a very explicit way or just the opposite a very infantile way,” she says. “It is always a challenge to represent a woman’s sensuality without highlighting her sexual attributes. I’m not sure if I have succeeded in it but that was the main guidance thought.”

Check out more of her works below.
