]]> The past year has seen most of us in the kitchen and we’ve settled into routines that involved a lot more home cooking. According to one study, more than half of shoppers admitted they were eating at home more often since the pandemic began. But if we judge the numbers according to Instagram, the number of home chefs is much bigger.

One Instagram page we’ve enjoyed scrolling through for food inspo these past months has been Pinch of Yum. Run by food blogger and legend Lindsay Ostrom, it has become a Mecca for food enthusiasts and aspiring chefs alike, amassing over one million followers.

“Instagram stories have been huge for us,” admitted Ostrom in an interview with the Mediakix blog. “It’s amazing to me that we can just be in our house in our pajamas and doing some random video posts that will be viewed by more than 50,000 people. If I were to go in front of 50,000 people in real life, it would feel so intimidating. But I can talk to that many people from my pajamas, on my couch, without showering, and not feel nervous about it at all.”

Her down-to-earth approach to blogging seems to have struck a chord with others. But it’s Ostrom’s unapologetic enthusiasm about cooking that makes her truly stand out. According to Ostrom, she hopes she can inspire others just as well.

“I want you to be so excited about these recipes that you eagerly await 5 pm when you can go home from work and start cooking,” she remarked.

Recent recipes include triple berry cheesecake muffins and crispy black bean tacos with cilantro lime sauce. You can thank us later!⠀

]]> There’s just something about macarons that makes them incredibly pleasing to the eye, but none of them are more colorful and adorable than the ones designed by the creative Toronto baker who you can find on Instagram under the name Melly Eats World.

Melly’s take on the beloved French pastry became such an online sensation that she ended up attracting 180,000 followers on Instagram, but you’ll have to look twice to realize they’re macarons in the first place.

The most impressive part of the whole story is that Melly isn’t even a pro baker! She was working as a law clerk when she started her culinary adventure and baking was just something she did in her free time.

Her designs show a lot of attention to detail, and it takes her 6-10 hours to finish two dozen of her signature macarons from scratch to finish. That’s part of the reason why she’s not scared about anyone stealing her ideas – even if they managed to pull it off, it wouldn’t pay off to sell them.

I have a love-hate relationship with fondant, well…mostly hate.😅 This is probably the most amount of fondant I've ever used to decorate macarons (i.e. the flowers).🌼 Sure, it's an effective way to add details and pop of colours to macarons but practically speaking, it doesn't taste good and since macarons require refrigeration, the fondant will condensate and weep (unless dried properly beforehand). This is something I've been grappling with for quite some time – should I sacrifice taste for looks? Using fondant instead of painstakingly piping batter will also save me sooo much time.😭 I'm not a proper pastry chef but I do feel a certain sense of responsibility to respect taste and not lose sight that food, after all, should be edible and taste good. Based in Lima, Peru, Jose went 100 percent vegan by the age of 14 and taught himself to cook from scratch. Chef Loria Stern has turned into somewhat of a celebrity, thanks to her beautiful flower pressed shortbread cookies, which were featured in publications like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Goop. Mike has always been the creative type and he started looking for a way to let his creativity shine.  After a few failed attempts, Mike turned his focus to making cookies with pretty, unusual shapes, and just like that, his new hobby was born.  

On his Instagram page, you will not find your usual boring cookie cutters from the store – his feed is full of really innovative and inspirational designs, as well as cute pictures of the finished products. He even makes his own cookie dough and royal icing. 

You can get the cookie cutters from his online store for a decent price and have them shipped to your house. Mike will even give you recipes and detailed instructions on how to recreate his amazing designs.
