Some of the earliest works of glass art were glass vessels. As a decorative and functional medium, glass was developed in Egypt and Assyria. These days, it’s hard to imagine our life without glass. Indeed, recent years have seen glass vessels and sculptures in the forefront of home décor trends, and for good reason.

Glass can transform a dark and gloomy interior into a space full of light, adding novelty to a room by virtue of its simplicity and elegance. With all of that being said, the following glass-made objects will upgrade any home!

Elena Zaycman’s Glass Butterflies

Stained glass designer Elena Zaycman has caught our attention thanks to her luminous sculptures of butterflies, moths, and bees created using the Tiffany technique, a glass assembly technique using opalescent glass.

Each piece is made with exact precision, beginning with a detailed sketch: “I like them to be accurate, and I don’t eyeball anything, because it affects every other stage of production,” says Zaycman.

Helle Mardahl’s Glass Lidded Jars

You might mistake Halle Mardahl’s glass objects for translucent candy. Exploring the contrast between organic shapes and hard materials, her designs aim to bring life to spaces, and are equally capable of standing alone or blending in. Amongst her hand-blown pieces you can find vases, bowls, and lamps. Personally, we find her glass-lidded jars irresistible.

Devyn Ormsby’s Glass Fruit

These glass-made fruit pieces remind us of the plastic replicas our grandmother showcased in her kitchen. Nostalgic to a tee, Devyn Ormsby’s unique collection features lemons, pears, mandarins, and bananas made from glass in a single block of color.

“Fruit holds a large significance in art history, which is where I think the appeal comes from,” says Ormsby, whose work nods to the blown glass fruit makers and collectors from the 1960s.

Polish designer Maria Fiter designs sustainable lamps made from papier-mache. Having studied History of Art in Cracow, Poland, she went on to found her studio, Crea-Re, in Barcelona in 2013. “I’ve always liked manual work—painting, sewing, making furniture,” shared Fiter in an interview with the Etsy blog. “During the Erasmus internship, while working with wood, I realized that I really like lamps,” she added.

“I wanted to be eco-friendly, and when I learned that paper maché can be made out of newspaper I was very happy that I could reuse what people were throwing away,” she went on to explain. Her lamps are made of collected newspapers from bars and her friends. “It’s great when you can reuse things that already exist and give them a second life,” says Fiter.

Other people seem to enjoy her designs just as well. Her eco friendly lamps have been featured in publications like Vogue UK, Elle Decoration, and Design Milk, and amongst her selected clients and retailers you can find Heal’s, Soho House Barcelona, and Sip Stone Restaurant Belfast Airport.

Her work oscillates between art and design, with her passion for sculpture visible in the organic shapes of every lamp. Each new design project starts out as a vision for a series of rough but elegant lamps with a nod to nature. “First I think about what I could make and I start doing some sketches,” she relays, describing her creative process. “Once I know the shape I want, I think about which mold would serve me best. I use different kinds of molds: Some are balloons, some are cardboard, some are made with funnels, and one lamp, the Metamorfozis, is made from a Coke bottle mold.”

“I think about people who like natural materials, like paper or wood,” says Fiter. “That’s the kind of person I am; I like these materials in my home, too. I also think about making things that are quite simple in design.” But though the design is quite simple, the result is nothing short of striking. Take a look for yourself:

Designer Tatiana Nedialkova aims to add a soft, colorful touch to interior design, bringing comfort, luxury, and inspiration to the dinner table. Based in England, she runs Softer and Wild, a home goods line that sells oven mitts, kitchen towels and, aprons, amongst other things.

“Something that influenced me from a young age was the drive people had to decorate and personalize their living spaces with found materials and find beauty in the simplest of objects,” she told Etsy’s blog. “My passion for transforming spaces was massively encouraged when I went to art school in England. I was making illustrations, and a lot of times I was thinking, ‘I wish there was an object with this illustration on it.’ My dad has always worked in textiles and he kind of encouraged me. He said, ‘Let’s try to put your images onto fabric,’ and that’s how things got started.”

Nedialkova draws and designs each pattern, working closely with textile designer Paula Downes, who then carefully chooses the fabrics, matches the colors to materials and sews the finished pieces. The fabrics are produced in a family-run workshop, made entirely in Britain, and meant to last.

“My illustrations are a mix between the Scandinavian aesthetic and Bulgarian folk tales, and they’re also influenced by Bulgarian artists from the ’70s who created these beautiful logo types,” relayed Nedialkova. “I’m Bulgarian originally, but I’ve also lived in Brighton, UK, which is a beautiful town with old architecture. There are amazing decorations and patterns on the houses—circles and ornaments. I translate those into illustrations as well.”

Eny Lee Parker describes herself as a designer of objects and spaces. Born in Brzail and currently based in Savannah, Georgia, her furniture design is artsy while still being approachable, and more importantly, practical. Through her designs, she aims to explore human needs and wants.

“I started with interior design and was working in that field for some time,” she described her creative journey in an interview with Matter of Hand. “Interior designers love and appreciate furniture, so the appreciation was always there,” she notes. “But when I was working in residential interior design, we used to have to pick out furniture a lot and I always wished that aspects of the pieces were different in this or that way. I never had confidence that I could actually design things until I came back to Savannah and enrolled in a master’s program for furniture.”

Her practice included exploring a lot of different materials, starting with wood and metals, and moving onto ceramics, which is another passion of hers. “I always start with a topic that I am really interested in whether it is feminism or an art movement,” she describes her process. “Then I sketch a bunch, make a lot of mood boards, start some model making or prototypes, and after that I make it.”

Lee Parker’s fascination with the mind and behavior of people leads to objects that echo human emotions. “I do a lot of work on the computer so everything is always done digitally first – I set dimensions for everything,” she notes. “That’s especially important with furniture. The ceramics don’t always stay accurate, but I have to know generally what height or width I need. It’s so much easier for me to have everything drawn; it’s kind of like having blueprints. You kind of have to. It’s a little different than being in sculpture.”

Russian interior designer Dmitry Reutov has received plenty of accolades over the years. Since 2007, he runs his own architectural and construction company, with his studio conducting projects of varying complexity from residential interiors to business spaces. The studio then implements projects with its own team of builders.

His work takes him all over the world, from New York to Spain. “My schedule is tight, but it’s hard to describe a typical day,” he explained, relaying his work schedule in an interview with Sixtysix Magazine. “I don’t call it work. This is a process for me, a process I love. I’m solving problems. Seven days a week.”

Quite often, his working day begins with calls, which require some decision making – how to make things, who’s going where, etc. Then there’s purchase orders, site inspections, and endless meetings with clients, construction workers, partners, and contractors. “But I always spare myself some days for pure creativity because, at the end of a day, I am creating all the projects myself,” notes Reutov. “When my inspiration is here, I can work through the night,” he adds. “It all depends on the problems that arise, because it’s spontaneous, and you can’t predict or keep track of them, unfortunately.”

Scrolling through his Instagram page, the first thing that stands out is his original color choices, but also his choice of shapes and textures. “When creating interiors, I always turn to nature, asking myself what it would look like in nature,” he explains his creative process. “Even when I look at plastic as a modern man-made material, I associate it with nature. I can relate transparent plastic to ice.”

Jean-Luc Godard’s lamps are much more than that. A self-taught artist with a passion for wood and metal, Godard treats his work as “sculptural lighting” rather than simple devices that make light and heat.

Originally born and raised in France, he moved to the United States in 1989, where he works from his cozy studio situated at the edge of a nature preserve in the rolling foothills of the Berkshires in northwestern Connecticut. With the meadow outside the studio filled with wildflowers, inspiration comes easy for Godard.

His sculptural lighting pieces focus on organic designs and minimalist concepts, with his creations directly responding to the surrounding environment and his everyday experiences. As such, his work isn’t confined to one specific style or theme. “While others may develop one style and reproduce countless versions of it, for me, the creative process is a journey that takes you to places limited only by your imagination,” he writes poetically on his website.

With a background in furniture design and custom sign making, Godard knows how to work with raw materials, carving intricate sculptures from wood and metal. “I pride myself on having a keen eye for choosing the perfect materials,” he writes, “those with beautiful natural curves and unique grain to the wood, which make my pieces unique and which define my work as that of a naturalist.”

Kassiopeya Sachenwerkler is a German artist best known for her reimagination of Salem’s Lot. She says that she has been always fascinated with art, however, she was always lacking any ambition to make a statement with her work.

Nowadays, she describes herself as a “creature and diorama artist” with a passion for building extraordinary book settings and figures. Her latest creation is a special chandelier which she named Shining Oscar.

“The main challenge of this particular project was to keep the weight of the figure as low as possible. After all, the finished octopus chandelier should later be mountable on the ceiling without any problems,” the artist wrote on Bored Panda and added that she used Styrofoam plates, lightweight modeling clay, and plaster bandages.

To see her marvelous work, check out the gallery below and follow her on Instagram for future updates. Would you like to have such a special roommate?

Miranda Moreira hopes to add that extra pop to your living room. The owner of Bride & Wolfe, she produces distinctive and vibrant objects for the home inspired by art and popular culture. These include graphic art pieces that are made from mirror, enamel, and powder-coated steel; all characterized by modern forms and a bold sense of color.

“I’m so visual, seeing colors and patterns whilst food shopping can be as inspiring as looking through art books or surfing the net,” said Moreira, talking about her varied sources of inspiration in an interview with the Little Citizens Boutique Blog. “I’ve become more nostalgic since I’ve become a mum, and my childhood in St Kilda is hugely influential- panel vans, hot summers on the beach, icypoles and Oz rock!”

But like most independent designers, it took Moreira some time to get to where she is today. Based in Melbourne, after studying Fine Arts, she lived and worked in Paris for six years. Establishing the Bride & Wolfe brand on her return to Melbourne, she sought to bring together her passion for art and European craftsmanship with the youthful irreverence of Australian culture.

Launched in 2005, her brand specializes in limited edition, hand-finished home pieces paying particular attention to design and materials. The ranges are designed in Australia and made in small quantities in collaboration with local Melbourne makers.

“I try to be aware of living in the present and enjoying each day, even the harder ones,” says Moreira.Take a look at some of her unique designs below:

Adding wallpaper to your walls is an easy (and relatively cheap) way to upgrade your interior design game. And if it’s a Kate Zaremba’s wallpaper, the change from basic to artistic is achieved easily as one, two, three!

The former child actress received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Art Studies from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. But it was only after she worked with potter and designer Jonathan Adler that Zaremba realized her true love was interior design.

“My focus in art school was textiles, but I’ve always been a paper person,” she shared with the Urban Outfitters blog. “So as I was learning surface design and weaving I was also creating sculptures and installations out of cut paper. I went on to work for Jonathan Adler who is a master of interiors. The unique and storied objects he creates continue to inspire me. Wallpaper seemed like a melding of my life experiences, I want to make things that enliven a space, that provide creative energy and inspiration for its inhabitants.”

Zaremba now works from her two studios in Austin, TX and Washington, DC. “An idea for a pattern can really pop up out of nowhere or sometimes it’s in a museum looking at works of art or it might come out of playful experimentation in my studio,” she went on to say. “You can’t force the creative process so I always have multiple things in the works. Some designs take longer than others and some are formed in a momentary sketch.”

Prepare to fall in love.

Hilary Pecis’ paintings are crammed with details – interior landscapes that are a sort of colorful homage to contemporary living, but with a nod to modern artists. “In January 2014 I moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco, and that is when my work took a shift,” recalled the painter in an interview with Art of Choice. “There were quite a few contributing factors, but mainly the light here was so unlike the light in the Bay Area. I was so thrilled to make paintings of just about anything, because everything resonated a vibrancy that I was unaccustomed to. Additionally, I was a new mom and my scope seemed to be shrinking to my immediate surroundings.”

According to Pecis, the pace in Los Angeles felt slower, which in turn allowed her to spend more time looking and meditating on her setting. “The pace also nurtured my investigations into figuring out how to make paint do what I had intended for it to do. The combination of limitless inspiration, the forced slowing down, and the nurturing setting liberated me from any previous ideas about art making and it encouraged growth.”

The interiors she depicts aren’t imagined, but are based on images that she has taken. “Sometimes I see a setting or landscape that I like right away and snap a pic, and store in a cache to later work from,” she says. “Generally, they are images from my home or my friend’s homes, although occasionally I have worked from other people’s images as well. By using images as a guideline, it frees me up to take liberties, like using abstraction in particular areas when it makes sense to do so.”

Her paintings have been the subject of one-person exhibitions at galleries such as Halsey McKay, East Hampton, NY and Rachel Uffner Gallery, NY. She’s also amassed a following of more than 11k on Instagram. Here are some highlights from her page.

Born in Fullerton, CA, Pecis has been living in Los Angeles since receiving her Master of Fine Arts in 2009 and her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2006 from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
