Alvaro Gracia Montoya of MetaBallStudios created a terrifying animation that shows how the size of asteroids compares to some other things.

The video starts with an image of a human next to one of the smaller rocks and continues by showing bigger and bigger asteroids compared to a truck, a house, and a city landscape. In a matter of seconds, we get to see the big asteroids that could easily cover the entire city like New York.

If you’re not scared by what you see in the video, remember that in 2018, the B612 Foundation told The Daily Star that “it’s 100 percent certain we’ll be hit, but we’re not 100 percent sure when.” This was the same year when Stephen Hawking wrote that asteroids are the Earth’s biggest threat in his last book Brief Answers to the Big Questions.

A recent episode on Tom Scott’s YouTube channel (previously The Language Files) explains why we use hand gestures while speaking. Linguists have studied this phenomenon for a long time and found that there are five different categories in which they can categorize these so-called paralinguistic movements:

  • iconic, those that represent literal objects like a flat surface
  • metaphoric, that symbolize concepts like “before” and “after”
  • deictic, when you point to yourself or someone
  • pragmatic, like offering a seat
  • beat, which follows the rhythm of speech

To think about what our universe and everything in it is made of can be mind-bending. We all know from physics classes that the atom is the smallest constituent unit of matter that makes a chemical element. Still, it can be pretty difficult to imagine a single atom and to scale it against common items.

Wren Weichman, Corridor Crew YouTube channel member, explains the actual size of atoms by comparing it to the size of a tennis ball. If an atom was the size of a tennis ball, he says, our blood cells would be the size of a small town. A penny would have the same diameter as the Earth! It’s pretty wild to even think about it.

Chris Salomone is a talented woodworker and the father of a six-year-old son whose drawing he recently turned into a real piece of furniture. Salomone shared a video of the whole process on his YouTube channel. On the same channel, we discovered a lot of other videos that show the beautiful side of woodworking, so we recommend you check it out.

“On this episode, I take my son’s drawing and turn it into a real, functioning piece of furniture. I still used a lot of proper woodworking techniques to build this project, even though the final outcome might not appear that way,” Salomone wrote along with the video.

To see what the end result looks like and how the kid reacted to his dad’s amazing gesture, watch the video below.
