Monsieur Cailloux is a French artist whose whimsical ceramic sculptures are unlike anything you’ve seen so far. The reason for it is that they all come from an imaginary planet.

With his sculptures, Cailloux is creating a whole new world of unknown creatures that visit Earth. They belong to a Cailloux tribe and live on the stone planet MRCX. Most of these creatures resemble stones of various shapes and colors with minimalistic facial features.

The members of the Cailloux tribe are also characterized by having three legs. This is explained as their evolutionary trait that allows them to travel across MRCX with astonishing speed.

You’ll often find that these creatures are full of irregularities, cosmetic flaws, and unusual features. According to Cailloux, this is done by purpose. He isn’t striving to make a perfect piece and instead embraces when it doesn’t turn out the way he planned.

“I try to make visible the humanity that is hidden in us by pressing on the irregularities and flaws of a handmade work. Mistakes are then, for me, a source of happiness,” Cailloux shared with Colossal in a recent interview.

All members of the Cailloux tribe who visit Earth are available for adoption, and there is a long line of art enthusiasts who want to give them a new home. But you can still meet them thanks to Cailloux’s Instagram page, where he regularly shares his newest creations.

British artist Adam Rush’s approach to ceramics isn’t something you see every day. He creates pieces that are somewhat weird, but curiously captivating, thanks to the fact that each seems like it has its own personality.

Rush’s ceramic creations, ranging from jugs to teapots and mugs, are known for their imperfect shapes and being adorned with representations of a human face. Each piece comes with slightly different facial features and expressions, some smiling, others frowning, and some having a surprise look. This touch makes them uniquely stand out among the crowd.

For some of the pieces, Rush teamed up with his twin brother Stuart, who is also an artist. The two frequently collaborate together, having similar motivations and ideas they want to present with their work, only in a different medium.

“We touch upon their reality of anxiety, depression, and temporality with an occasional touch of humor,” the Rush brothers describe their works. “In result showing expressive and touching artworks which develops an instant connection with the viewer.”

Rush frequently updates his social media with new collections and ceramic pieces. You can check out more of them by continuing to scroll.

“Now that we’ve found love what are we gonna do with it?” reads Michele Quan’s Instagram bio. A cryptic message, but so are her ceramic objects. According to Quan’s website, many of the objects and images are rooted in the visual symbols of Eastern iconography – their meaning and beauty of which she admits she’s continuously in awe.

Her clay forms are all handmade — either hand built or thrown on the wheel, after which they are hand-painted. The work is then fired in a gas kiln to 2,350 degrees. Other materials used include hand-dyed cotton, hemp rope, and reclaimed wood. The finished products are meant to be showcased either in the home or the garden.

“When making things I have to see it in my head first,” she relayed in an interview with Matter of Hand. “Some people just go for it and it evolves, but for me it’s weird – I have to see it in my head or I don’t believe I can do it. I have to be able to see the process linearly. Once I figure out how to make something the first time I’ll make a template so that I don’t have to re-think it every time. If you have to think too hard it’s more exhausting.”

The pieces themselves become a canvas for her love of drawing, painting, text, and color; with inspiration found in the writings and teachings of Buddhism and its extensive visual language. “I’m not making work to challenge people,” explains Quan. “I just hope that at a moment in their life, customers could have pleasure from looking at or owning an object that I made. I feel like anything I say is going to sound corny, but I want my pieces to create moments where people look back at their intentions and how they want to operate in the world, what they wish to see or have or be or connect with. Just bringing them back into the present and connecting them to the beauty of the world; that’s a moment where everyone feels really good. It’s like touching ground before you go off into the craziness.”

Everything gets much cuter when you add a face to it, don’t you think? Taiwanese artist Fan Yanting does just that to the minimalistic ceramic items he makes. His mugs, vases, and vessels gain emotion through faces he sculpts on them. The artist never tries to decide which emotion he will show on a certain item.

“I empty my mind when I’m sculpting the human faces. I might plan the pottery shape and maybe where I’d like to position the face, but I don’t start with specific character designs in mind,” Yanting told Neocha.

Through the expressions on his ceramics, the artist gives his audience a chance to draw their own conclusions about the emotions behind them. He’s fascinated by the fact that certain sculptures remind people of someone they know and associate with certain emotions based on that, so one piece can be seen in a different way by different people.

If you like plants and puns, you’ll love the works of Hannah Brown. This Australian author, songwriter, and ceramic artist crafts adorable pots for plants that come equipped with fitting chuckling puns.

Brown first got into ceramics as a hobby, only to realize this relaxing activity suits her. She started making all sorts of pots for her plants but wanted to distinguish them from works that other ceramic artists do. So she figured she could inscribe some witty and sassy statements onto them.  This is how Pun Pots were born.

Soon enough, Brown’s pun-filled pots, like “Looking Sharp” cactus pot, became a hit and the high demand inspired her to continue with this cool project. Check out some of them below.

Artists and designers can find inspiration in the weirdest places. For Miranda, inspiration comes from Ancient Egypt.

Toronto-Based Miranda is a former interior designer who has been focusing more and more on ceramics in the past few years. Her interest in ceramics comes from her days as a design student who also minored in ceramics. One day, in her ceramics class, she received an assignment – to use the throwing wheel to create a lidded object. She happily accepted the assignment and started looking for inspiration.

Miranda has a special love for ancient cultures and for animals, so she instinctively wen to look for ideas in Ancient Egyptian art. In her art history books, she learned about Egyptian Canopic jar – jars there were used to preserve the deceased’s internal organs in the mummification process, and were buried with him. The jars were usually shaped like Egyptian gods with animal heads.  Miranda decided to create her own take on the ancient tradition and design her own line of Canopic jars, shaped like animals.

Miranda shares her Canopic jars on her IG account. What started out as a small classroom assignment has turned out into a whole line of products, with dozens of tiny, adorable jars, Check out her work below.

Zemer Peled creates organic-like sculptures that remind of flowers and coral. These sculptures – that vary from small scale to room-sized installations – are compiled from thousands of porcelain shards. Through these deconstructed-to-be-constructed pieces, Peled aims to examine the beauty and brutality of the natural world.

Born and raised in Israel, Peled earned her MA at the Royal College of Art (UK). In recent years, her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Sotheby’s, Saatchi Gallery (London), and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City); and has also been featured in top tier publications like Vogue, O Magazine, and Elle.

Talking about her creative process with CFile, Peled explained that she produces the ceramic shards herself using a slab roller. “I make sheets of clay, fire them, and smash them into pieces with a hammer,” she added. “I love playing with the idea of the texture and the form can look airy, delicate, light and fluffy and to give a sense of flutter, as if my breath would break it. Yet, the hard and sharp shards can be seen as round and moving, and give a sense of softness.”

According to Peled, her creative process is crucial to her sculptural ideas. Those, “are consistent with the Kabbalah concepts of Shevirah (breaking) and Tikkun (mending) that can also be considered as renewal. I make, then break, then make again. Chaos, destruction, and decay are intense and necessary creative process for me to create each of my sculptures.”

Take a look at some of her organized chaos:

The art of interior design doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. A playful ceramic set is a great and easy way to add a tongue-in-cheek twist to an otherwise standard living room. Take, for instance, Katie Kimmel’s dog-shaped vases.

Taking inspiration from her “little goofball dog, Pony,” Kimmel ‘s ceramic creations are a joy to behold. “I try to be nice to myself when I’m working and mentally it’s allowed me to go to a lot of weird places,” admitted the California-based artist in an interview with the Urban Outfitters blog. “Also I take time to work in different mediums and try new things, then when I come back to ceramics I find that the new things have a way of influencing the way I work.”

Working from her studio in the Mojave Desert, she has amassed more than 30 thousand followers on Instagram, proving that her different approach to art-making is well noted.

“I took ceramics classes as a kid and have always been very sculpture-minded when it comes to making art,” she recalled. “In college I had the facility to start working with ceramics again and it was a dream come true! I love feeling connected with my younger self who loved clay.”

Check out some of her playful designs.
