Dorris Vooijs’ builds up her creations layer upon later. Having studied Fine Arts at ArtEZ University in Arnhem and later obtained a BFA in Drawing and Art History, her methods vary, situated at a crossroads between traditional techniques and more digital art.

Her pieces — a hybrid between paintings, collages, drawings, textile art, and digital art — usually begin with an image found on the internet, in magazines, or thrift shops. Often, these images become the physical basis for her new work. With digital sketches, prints, markers, spray paint, thread, and ink, Vooijs transforms these images so that they reflect her life and her aesthetics.

“I like to see what happens when you cross digital stuff and layer that with traditional methods,” she writes on her website. “Building up and peeling pieces away or scratching my way back to the surface, until I feel that it might be time to step back and leave it alone,” she explains.

With her methods varying, each piece can take anywhere between a couple of hours to more than a week to complete. “Some pieces took so long I almost gave up,” she admitted in an interview with Jung Katz. “Actually, I did repaint a lot of my work… sometimes it’s just the quickest fix and besides that, it’s budget-friendly. I also often work on a couple of pieces simultaneously.”

Her toolbox ranges from the traditional to the digital and includes Photoshop, Wacom Intuos tablet, A3 printer, digital prints, transfers, acrylic, oil, spray paint, Tipp-Ex, embroidery, markers, pencils, ink, and carbon paper.

Here’s a fact: penguins are adorable. The chubby, flightless birds with their funny waddle and adorable faces will melt any heart. But what’s better than just looking at penguins? Imagining them doing everyday human tasks! Just ask Sheba.

Sheba is a self-taught Japanese artist with a passion for penguins, as is evident from her IG account dedicated to drawings of the funny little birds. But instead of just drawing penguins in their natural environment – resting on an iceberg or swimming in the ocean – Sheba likes to imagine what it would be like for a penguin to perform a human task. It can be anything from cooking do reading a book.

The idea may sound outlandish, but Sheba’s drawings prove that the world could do with drawings of penguins skipping rope or having a bubble bath. With their sort wings and legs and their round face, imagining them trying to do anything remotely human is just hilarious. And in Sheba’s drawing, they usually fail at even the simplest tasks – in the most adorable way possible.

While it’s easy to feel sorry for Sheba’s penguins and their misadventures, the paintings will lift the spirit of anyone who sees them.

It’s hard not to be taken by Olivia Knapp’s incredibly detailed hand-drawn illustrations. Influenced by European line engravings of decorative relief and scientific specimens from the 16th to 18th centuries, her tight cross-hatching technique involves long, slow, and steady curved lines that articulate the surface contours of her subjects; creating supple and tangible imagery.

Having studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Parsons The New School for Design, majoring in Fashion Design and receiving her BFA in 2006 from Parsons, Knapp dipped her toes into the fashion industry first, working for several years as a Printed Textile Designer, before finding her true calling.

“In 2010, when I was still working as a full-time Textile Designer, I was asked to create a t-shirt print inspired by an engraving of a Baroque relief,” she relayed in an interview with Jung Katz. “The process of reimagining this aesthetic with pen and paper was intensely enjoyable. By the time I completed the print I just wanted to do more.”

Now wholly committed to her detailed drawings, she incorporates a “line to dot” rendering method as well as an extremely rare “dot and lozenge” rendering method. According to her personal website, “dot and lozenge” is a practice that was used by 16th-century masters, in which a dot is placed in the center of a diamond shape made by a cross-hatching pattern, helping to refine the transition between values.

“I experimented off and on with cross-hatching while maintaining my corporate job for a couple years,” Knapp explains. “I then left my job and moved out of the city for nine months. During this time, I devoted myself to perfecting my cross-hatching technique. I started showing a few friends and gradually people started approaching me, wanting me to create logos and illustrations for them. And now, it’s my full-time gig. That t-shirt print was the birthplace of my cross-hatching style that I use today.”

With more than 20k fans on Instagram and an impressive body of work, we’re glad she found her calling.

Georgiana Tarlungeanu is an artist who is passionate about architecture, traveling, and sketching and she combined these passions into a rather interesting hobby. Georgiana brings a sketchbook everywhere she travels, and she makes beautiful drawings of interesting views, landscapes, and buildings. She started doing this seven years ago and so far she made around 500 sketches on her trips around Europe.

At some point during this interesting drawing adventure, Georgiana started experimenting with her style by changing the perspective and proportions of her sketches. “At some point 2 years ago, I got bored with keeping the real aspect of the place with its specific measurements and proportions. An idea popped into my head to start distorting and bending the reality,” the artist shared in Bored Panda.

“I wanted to challenge the viewer’s mind with various types of perspectives while keeping a lot of realistic details. It makes you reanalyze what you see from a different angle and question the reality you live in,” she added.

We can only guess that with her impressive talent and skill, Georgiana doesn’t need to buy souvenirs on her travels, as she has her own memories sketched on paper. Check out her artwork in the photos below.

Matteo Carta is a guy from Italy who works as a wedding photographer by day, but in his free time, he tries to be a portrait artist. We say “tries,” because, as he so beautifully describes, he’s the #1 TOP BAD ARTIST IN THE WORLD. However, that doesn’t stop him from sharing his portraits on Twitter and Instagram.

Unlike many people who were discouraged by a lack of talent, Carta decided to follow his passion no matter what. “The idea of making these portraits came to me 2 years ago while I was watching some content on Instagram. Scrolling around, I found an artist named ‘Tw1tterPicasso’, and there I opened my eyes to the world of bad artwork,” the artist wrote for Bored Panda.

“Inspired by his style, I created my own quest to become the worst artist in the world using mainly celebrities, actors and important people for inspiration.”

Carta doesn’t have any aspirations to be the best and most talented artist and that’s probably what people love about him. His portraits of famous people are not good at all, but he tries his best to accent their well-know features and in the end, you must appreciate his efforts.

Take a look at his unique drawings and make sure to support him on Instagram.

As he looks at each coffee stain, he imagines what it looks like and explains the reason he’s drawing a certain thing over it. We are absolutely in love with his style and hope you will be, too.

“So I’m David Jardine and I draw on coffee stains,” Laughing Squid quotes the artist. “This is me right here. This is a portrait of myself. I actually like to think of myself as sort of like a toilet and then the world just sort of dumps whatever in there and I vomit it out onto a microphone and right here. This is the microphone attached to the internet.”

Gary Villareal is a famous American illustrator who managed to build a community of 203k followers on his Instagram account, all thanks to his immense talent.

He comes from a family devoted to art – his brothers drew very well, his father loved music, his mother was an amazing cook, and his sister was a passionate dancer. He grew up in Texas, but moved to LA to become a conceptual artist.

His road to recognition was really tough and challenging – he worked as a cashier in HEB for 10 years. It was a boring job, but it gave him enough spare time to express himself artistically. In the meantime, he secretly fell in love with concept art in video games. He applied for a job as the package designer at HEB, and got it, only to find out he didn’t like it at all. After two years, he got replaced, which turned out to be the best thing that happened to him.

He was 27, recently married and unemployed, and spent the next 7 months honing his skills. Soon, a friend wrote to him about a full-time concept artist position, and that’s where he is now, fully content and as creative as ever!

“I almost lost you buddy…” Nora thought as she picked Koko up from a muddy pool and placed him over her shoulder. It’s been a few weeks now since they last saw each other. Some parts of the river dried around the region, so she decided to check up on Koko. They’ve been friends for many years forging a deep bond for one another. A bond that never died, especially during the dry seasons. Though, over the years, life began taking course. Muscles weakening, bones and joints ached with every movement making it harder for Nora to visit him. She, in a sense, was Koko’s mother. She fed him, moved him to deeper waters when parts of the river dried up and kept him safe. However, she couldn’t help but wonder how long this will last. Until then, she takes a great sense of joy in helping her friend. . . What’s going on everyone, I hope you like this piece! This idea came to me one day after reminiscing about a fishing trip I had with my older brothers. We would often go fishing at the Brazos River and I remember walking on the riverbed during dry seasons. You would often see some dead fishes lying out; some were even easy catches as if they just washed up. Pretty interesting to see how that experience influenced this piece. Anywho, enough of my chatter… Thanks for your time if! . . Have a great day and stay with it!! 😊✊🏼 . . . . . . . . . #drawingoftheday #sketchbook #sketch #art #villarrte #arte #artoftheday #illustration #artistsoninstagram #pencildrawing #instaartist #characterdesign #interesting #amor #instaartoftheday #beautiful #illustrationgram #storytelling #dibujando #handdrawing #fish #catfish #pencil #traditionalartist #mother #traditionaldrawing #original

Inspired by her appreciation for nature and animals, the artist creates her art pieces using colored pencils. With precise movements, she recreates the soft texture of cat or dog fur, feathers of a wild bird, the vivid colors of animals and plants.

“When I’m creating a portrait it’s like time stands still and I can draw for hours totally fascinated with the artwork I’m creating,” she shared on Bored Panda. “To put it simply – I love drawing and letting my imagination go free.”

She has been creating art her entire life, as long as she can remember, and spends lots of time reading everything art-related. Her work has been featured in various media, like Colored Pencil Magazine and CP Treasures volume 6 by Ann Kullberg – Colored pencil masterworks from around the world.

Artist David Jardine doodles characters on coffee stains on paper, making up entertaining stories along the way. He films the whole process and you can watch it on his YouTube channel.

His series is called Coffee Doodles and you can watch it on YouTube. Start with a few videos we picked out for you. You can find them below.

This stop motion animation brings back so many good memories from the childhood, don’t you agree?

Japanese artist KisaragHutae6 created the amazing animation you can see in the video below using nothing but some pens and a regular notebook. He worked at 30 frames per second rate, which means he had to draw over 1,500 frames for a video of around 50 seconds.

The video shows the legendary world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros and it’s a true tribute to Nintendo’s classic game. Scroll down and click play to watch the video. Don’t forget to share it with your friends in case they haven’t seen it yet!
