]]>“Working from life enables spontaneous brushwork,” explained Yeomans in an interview with Jackson’s Art where he discussed his lifelong practice. “Each brushstroke, the color, the direction, the thickness of the paint is all a response to something happening in front of me,” he says. “If all this becomes still (in a photo) I lose all these variable qualities in my work that make it my own.”
According to Yeomans, his traditional training was achieved at the internationally renowned Charles H. Cecil studios in Florence. As well as specializing in portraiture, Yeomans also paints plein air works, some of which hang in collections throughout Europe, Asia, and the US.
As he tries new techniques, Yeomans expands his knowledge of this traditional form of art making. “Sometimes they fail and sometimes they work out, but I use the experience for future projects,” he stressed.

]]>“Africa was love at first sight,” the artist tells My Modern Met. “I have learned so much about its cultures, but most of all I have felt that there was something so important in this land.” He was particularly in awe of the houses made of bricks and many other materials that show creativity and celebrate life.
Two of the portraits from his series belong to award-winning writer Amanda Gorman, and Jamaican American reggae artist Keznamdi. Gorman’s portrait was named after Maya Angelou’s poem And Still I Rise and it’s a powerful and confident work. Wonderful vibrant colors make this series one of the most beautiful things Tsevis ever did.

]]>The Bahamian-Canadian contemporary artist is an undeniable master when it comes to realistic paintings, with her emotionally-charged hyperrealistic portraits looking more like photographs than paintings. But incredibly enough, her techniques were learned through trial and error, having received no formal training through art school.
“I’m sure you can learn a ton from art school, but it depends on what you want to take from art, and where you want to go with it that should determine whether or not it’s for you,” says King. “For me, I couldn’t imagine being ‘taught’ art. It’s one of the only free things in this world and I’ve personally gained so much from having the artistic process be 100% my own journey, untainted from outside influence.”
Exhibited around the world in galleries and museums throughout Canada and the United States, as well as the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates, King’s art deserves the hype. With more than 340k followers on Instagram, she has also won several awards, with her work being found in both private and public collections worldwide including the MET’s publication collection.
“Whether I make it big, or die a nobody, I spent my life doing what I loved, and I didn’t need student debt to make that possible,” says King. Now there’s a message we can stand behind.

]]>“I work with these models. I don’t paint from a reference found somewhere on the network. I spend days with them. For bigger paintings, I set up the whole scene in my studio so that they could always come to see the finished piece,” the artist told Bored Panda.
He began painting when he was only a little boy; his talent was discovered by his primary school teacher who helped him deepen his knowledge of practical skills in oil painting.
Lechoszest’s art incorporates traditions, rituals, classical clothing antique objects, and if you look closely, you will see elements of impressionism and abstraction, as well.

]]>“I empower women of color through art that challenges ideological hegemony in contemporary society. The black female bodies of my paintings are the memory of my ancestors expressed in a way to heal and promote self-love,” the artist said in an interview with Colossal. She also added that her portraits speak to “the part of me that has been the least represented in our society.”
Rosales already gained public attention for her reinterpretations of classic artworks, in which she replaced main subjects with her black heroines. Her 2017 painting “The Creation of God”, for example, went viral because it depicted God as a black woman.

“When you draw a live portrait, you can see the model better. Unlike drawing from a flat photograph, you can see an actual shape of the face,” the artist said. But are there any drawbacks of drawing live portraits?
“The most challenging in portraiture drawing is when a model moves a lot. It becomes difficult to capture the likeness.”

]]>Based out of San José, California, his work has long outgrown its humble beginnings and is now shown in public art spaces, museums, companies, and galleries, as well as published in editorial publications.
“I feel lucky to have studied as an artist in the streets and later in a college,” he shared in an interview with Acclaim Magazine. “In doing so, I always felt like I had to keep my artistry of the streets and love of letters separate from what I was learning in school. I used to separate what I could create, so, for example, I would tell myself ‘this is for graffiti’, and ‘that is for the galleries’, today I don’t. Now I am combining my love of everything together, which you will begin to see unfold in the years to come.”
His work tends to center around two types of portraiture which he refers to as, “Topographical Portraiture” and “Type Faces.” While the Topographical Portraits are made by stylizing a portrait with topographical lines and shapes, in a similar manner to those found through images on geographic maps; his Type Faces incorporate typography and portraiture.
“I want to expand further on the concept of these type-based portraits,” he says. We sure hope his dream comes true!

]]>But like many other renowned artists, Mlengeya didn’t pursue art at University, but rather graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance before taking on a banking career which she later quit in order to embark on a full-time career in art.
“My portfolio mostly consists of dark faces in minimal shades of black and browns against perfectly white backgrounds,” says Mlengeya. “I chose to paint black people to celebrate black ethnicities, to express the beauty in blackness, to bring forth pride and cement an unmovable black spirit.”
Painting mainly with acrylic, she finds inspiration in photographs and shares both her personal and borrowed experiences through her artworks. A lot of her paintings focus on women. “I focus on women as representatives of their societies, since throughout history; the central role of women as life bearers, nurturers, caretakers and educators has ensured the stability of their communities,” she explains.
Through her subjects, Mlengeya narrates her ideas, beliefs, and experiences from what she observes. This results in a diverse range of topics and paintings which are simple, minimalist, with an interesting use of negative space. “The minimalist simple backgrounds create high contrast and put emphasis and attention on the subjects,” she says.
