Catalina Bellizzi-Itiola is a San Diego-based multi-disciplinary artist, a visual artist, and designer with a background in music, who has been making very unique paintings. She paints portraits of women with their eyes shut.
Also known as Cataphant on social media, the half-Colombian, half-Argentine artist wanted to make a series of paintings where the male gaze didn’t play an important role in the meaning of the pieces.
“I wanted to paint women having spiritual experiences, completely unbothered by outside forces,” the artist explained. “So, I stopped painting them with their eyes open. I haven’t painted a human eye since 2016.”
