Artist Turns Cracked Eggshells into Amazing Works of Art

After cracking an egg to make an omelet, our first instinct is to throw away the eggshells into the trash. Well, after you check out our next story, you may get some other ideas.

Artist Elisa Sheehan recently started an intriguing project titled Kintsugi Eggshells, in which she turns cracked eggshells into amazing works of art.  She found inspiration in Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold or silver lacquer.

In order to create her artwork, Sheehan first paints the inside of shells in various patterns using paint and ink, and then covers the cracks with gold leaf.

“I’ve always loved the Japanese art of Kintsugi, wherein broken pottery is repaired with gold and rather than trying to disguise the break or flaw, it is highlighted and therefore elevated to a status of beauty.”  – Sheehan says about the project. “Its age is celebrated, its history is seen, its flaws are revered. I think it’s a good way to think about ourselves, others and our relationships as we age – not to try to look like our former, younger selves but to embrace our ‘breaks and flaws’ and to honor them and see the beauty in them.”
