Famous street artist Banksy recently painted a new mural in Finsbury Park, London. The mural contains big splashes of green paint alongside a stencil of a person holding a sprayer.

The beauty of Banksy’s new mural, which popped up over the weekend, is in the way it interacts with its surroundings. It was painted on a building wall behind a pruned tree, with the splashes of green paint essentially replacing the cut foliage.

The confirmation that the mural was indeed created by Banksy came from the artist himself. He shared a post on Instagram that shows photos of the wall before it was painted and photos of the finished artwork.

BBC reached out to the building owner Alex Georgiou, who said that the building is currently vacant and available for rent. He intends to keep the mural, Banksy’s first confirmed new piece in 2024, on the wall for people to enjoy.

“The question is, what do I do with it now? What am I meant to do with it now? I definitely plan on keeping it on there and letting people enjoy it, everyone’s loving it which is great, I just can’t really believe it, still, to be honest,” Georgiou told BBC.

If you find yourself walking through the streets of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and find a big tongue sticking out an air vent or a figurine of a martial artist in a cracked wall, congratulations; you’ve just stumbled upon an art installation by Dutch artist Frank “Frankey” de Ruwe.

Inspired by famous British graffiti artist Banksy, Frankey started using the streets of Amsterdam as a playground for his creative practice. With simple interventions, he transforms traffic signs, fences, and other urban objects into amusing street art.

“I just want to make people smile with my work, that’s the greater good. A 6-year-old and a 90-year-old can smile at the same thing; it’s amazing that you brighten someone’s day with just one object,” he shared in a recent interview with The New York Times.

Frankey started this fun project in 2020 when he noticed a studded block on the street that reminded him of a LEGO brick. He decided to create a giant LEGO figurine of André Hazes, a popular Dutch singer and placed it on the block.

Since then, Frankey has been entertaining locals and tourists with new installations on a weekly basis. He presents his newest pieces through newspaper Het Parool while also sharing them on Instagram. However, he never reveals the exact location, wanting people to discover them on their own.

So, if you are visiting Amsterdam one of these days, pay extra attention to your surroundings, and maybe you’ll see one of Frankey’s installations in person. In the meantime, check out some of his previous works below.

We can all agree that murals make the streets of any city more lively and inviting. That is especially the case with the murals from UK artist Sophie Mess.

Mess specializes in botanical murals that see her adorn grey buildings and urban structures with depictions of flowers, plants, leaves, and occasional vibrant birds. Her works can be found on the streets of major European cities like London, UK, and Paris, France.

Wherever they settle, Mess’ murals become an integral part of the urban surrounding. They attract the attention of both locals and tourists, who can’t resist taking a short break in their walk and admire the artwork.

According to Mess, she aims to create her botanical murals in a way that they “radiate” energy and life.” This is easily seen through her use of bold colors, attention to detail, and imagination-evoking elements.

“I find joy in this juxtaposition of the delicate interpretations of nature within the urban landscape, and finding the harmony between these seemingly contrasting elements,” Mess shares.

Besides creating large-scale artworks in the form of murals, Mess also makes botanic-inspired paintings that have been exhibited in various art galleries and collaborate with clothing brands on wearable art projects.

Designer and artist Ricardo Gonzalez is known online by his tag: “It’s a living,” explaining that this isn’t just a simple statement for him but a whole philosophy of life. Born in Durango, México, and currently living in Brooklyn, Gonzalez’s script style can be easily recognized, splashed on anything from large-scale murals to small-sized stickers. He also works commercially, collaborating with brands as big as Apple, Armani Exchange, Nike, Mercedes Benz, and Google.

A master of type, his direct approach of typography questions our ways of life with the aim of producing a positive impact. “I have been working with type as a profession for a few years, but I discovered calligraphy when I was in middle school,” he recalled in an interview with We Heart. “Since then, I was always doodling on my notes — and graffiti has continued to be an influence.”

As for his inspiration, he describes it as “a weird mix.” “Somehow I manage to merge my interests and draw inspiration from them,” he adds. “I started to do calligraphy on my own earlier on in life. I was lucky in Mexico that this was taught to us, starting in elementary school. I never thought it was a profession, so I just did it because I enjoyed it. I was also exposed to lettering through my grandfather — after seeing photos of his work in the 1940s and ’50s.”

Having studied graphic design in school, sharpened his technical skills and gave him the opportunity to go to school for typeface design and attend workshops. “Some of the tools I use to create come back to graffiti and how it has influenced me over the years,” he says. “I also like to experiment with the combination of digital and analog; handmade and contemporary.”

Charis Tsevis is a Greek visual designer and artist who creates gorgeous mosaic portraits. His art is inspired by many people, from popular TV characters to famous people from around the world. The last series he created is called African Bricks and it was inspired by his visit to Africa and everything he saw there.

“Africa was love at first sight,” the artist tells My Modern Met. “I have learned so much about its cultures, but most of all I have felt that there was something so important in this land.” He was particularly in awe of the houses made of bricks and many other materials that show creativity and celebrate life.

Two of the portraits from his series belong to award-winning writer Amanda Gorman, and Jamaican American reggae artist Keznamdi. Gorman’s portrait was named after Maya Angelou’s poem And Still I Rise and it’s a powerful and confident work. Wonderful vibrant colors make this series one of the most beautiful things Tsevis ever did.

The works of David Zinn are fairly easy to miss despite being in plain sight. This Ann Arbor-based artist does small-scale chalk drawings on the sidewalk, so you need to pay close attention in order to spot them. But once you do, you are welcomed with incredibly charming and adorable art.

Zinn started doing these artworks thanks to “temptations of a box of sidewalk chalk on an unusually sunny day”, as he puts it on his official website. He fell in love with the creative opportunities that this type of art offered, and it quickly became his calling card.

While most of his creative efforts are centered on Ann Arbor and other Michigan areas, Zinn’s unusual art can surface anywhere at any point. During his travels and festival visits, he makes sure to leave some art behind and has done so in Manhattan, Sweden, Taiwan, and many other corners of the world.

Zinn never plans ahead and instead lets the inspiration guide him. He improvises the drawing on the spot, being “limited only by the size of the sidewalk and the spirit of the day.” Still, he has recurring characters that he often revisits in his art, including bright green monster Sluggo and phlegmatic flying pig Philomena.

Born in 1976 in Damaia, the artist was first introduced to graffiti back in the mid-90s. A decade later, thanks to his anamorphosis technique, the completely self-taught Odeith has become internationally recognized. Now he is best known for his compositions painted in corners or flat walls that create a 3D optical illusion effect.

Images of spiders, frogs, bugs, fish, and birds are just some of the creatures the artist depicts. Some of them look like animals you can see only in a science horror fiction flick. During his career, Odeith has spray-painted walls all around the world and was contacted by big corporations, including Coca-Cola, Samsung, and Shell.

Michael Pederson is a visual artist who has an unusual way of expressing his creativity and entertaining people. Pederson does miniature and humorous interventions in his hometown of Sidney, Australia and other cities he visits.

Under the moniker Miguel Marquez Outside, Pederson installs warning signs, makes construction sites, and posts announcements. The beauty of his work is that it’s done on a smaller scale and often goes unnoticed by many passersby. However, once someone does spot it, it turns into an attraction.

As part of this unusual project, Pederson realized many cool ideas. This includes handing out plaques for Urban Weed Awards, renting holes, and posting helpful signs about the anxiety of ants.

The Garment District Alliance of NYC partnered with the city’s Department of Transportation and the architects working in the Canadian company Lateral Office to create an interactive seesaw playground.

The installation is located in Manhattan, between 37th and 38th Streets on Broadway and it consists of 12 big seesaws that start playing music and illuminating every time they’re used.

A block of Broadway had to be closed for traffic but we think it was worth it. The installation is called Impulse and the citizens and visitors of New York City enjoy it a lot so far. Impulse is a part of a public art program called Garment District Art on the Plazas.

You can try them yourself if you’re in New York!

He documents his work on Instagram where his photos regularly get tens of thousands of likes from his 758,000 followers. Scroll down and check them out.

Check out some of Pederson’s funny urban interventions below.

Artist James Chuter loves drawing colorful things and has many descriptions to his name: he is a freelance illustrator, designer, and street artist who has been transforming his playful characters and doodles into large scale murals and limited edition prints since 2016. He decorated walls in bars, hotels, and restaurants in cities all over the world, from London to New York and Sydney.

“I focus on bright, colorful, character-based artwork, mixing a random doodle style with balanced compositions,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “This year I plan to juggle commissions with more fine art prints, original canvas work, along with T-shirts, designer toys, pins and much more.”

You can find Chuter’s work on his personal website, and on his social media accounts. We really enjoyed browsing through his Instagram page and we believe that you will enjoy it, too. Follow him for future updates. Don’t forget to follow the arrows for more amazing images.
