Dutch Muralist Creates Art by Communicating with Communities

Jan Is De Man, Dutch muralist and tattoo artist with an international career, likes to create his murals by learning what the communities want to see in their neighborhoods.

With artwork that ranges from huge aquariums and sea murals and cityscapes, to beautiful jungle landscapes, Jan is always on the lookout for creating something that communicates with the locals and the surrounding space – themes that are either related to the environment or are lacking in it.

While some of his work is more realistic, and other is more psychedelic and dream-like, all of Jan’s artwork shares the qualities of vibrant color, visual storytelling, and plays on perception and dimensionality.

Jan’s latest project, in collaboration with fellow street artist Deef Feed, features a huge library on the side of a three-story building in a lucky neighborhood in Utrecht, Holland. This time around, Jan decided to really talk to the residents (some of which he was already friendly with) of the building and create something fully customized to their personal lives. What he eventually came up with was painting a large, magnified library on the side of the building, equipped with the residents’ very own favorite books.
