Edible Water Pouches Are Given Away During London’s Latest Marathon

For every athlete, a marathon is an exciting long-distance running race and over the years, regular people participated in this kind of event for fun and for health benefits as well.

But recently, people are becoming aware and some are even worried about hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles being thrown away during a public event. According to Bored Panda, London marathon used 920,000 plastic bottles in 2018. The fact that it takes from 450 to 1000 years for one bottle to dissolve, shows that we need to take actions on this matter.

This year, London marathon has made a big change when it comes to giving away water to runners. They have teamed up with Skipping Rocks Lab, a startup company who created edible water pouches called Ooho that are made from seaweed. Ooho has a packaging that dissolves completely and leaves no plastic behind. This product is particularly useful in events like marathon. The water pouches can be easily eaten since it has no taste and can be thrown away as it is entirely biodegradable.

By giving away these edible pouches to the runners during their 23rd mile, London’s latest marathon has reduced their usage from 920,000 water bottles to 704,0000.
